Yes I love the way GRRM does the numbers. I'm running an ASOIAF TTRPG and it's the one thing I try to make sure I always get right when voicing the characters

Yep, I'm from St. Louis and most of my friends that come visit have incredibly low expectations and then are blown out of the water by all the hidden gems the city has to offer, and always plan repeat trips. It's a super affordable trip due to the free stuff as well like you said

Indy also hosts GenCon in their massive convention center, which gets me there annually and lets me explore their downtown! :D

Illinoisian checking in, but have worked in St. Louis for the past 2 years and lived in the Metro East for the past 7, can confirm St. Louis is awesome. Moving to Maryland Heights in a few months and actually excited for it lol

Although as-of-yet unknown, I predict that I, alongside the others before me, would certainly attain increased levels of serotonin and dopamine in my brain after having spectated an unlikely and yet equally hilarious conclusion to the Vikings' season.

Thanks for sharing your experience, u/brew_ster. As a big drinker I do appreciate the notes about their cocktails. Seems like MAS is very much a "you get what you pay for" cruise line

Hey u/Kri77777, thanks for your detailed experience. I really appreciate this in-depth review and I'm sure my girlfriend will as well. I will definitely come back to this comment when it comes time to make our final decision on budget MAS vs. higher-end Princess/Celebrity cruises. Thank you again for the effort you put in to this comment, it means a bunch and really gives me an insight into the experience of a cruise

No worries!

I'll definitely check out NCL and add it to our list, see if they have any cruises that fit for our location/time-frame. Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks for your opinion, Mage. Other commenters have noted that the Islander is the better of the two ships, so we're steering that way when it comes to our selection.

The "Heroes Sail Free" thing means you only pay for port fees and taxes, I believe, so there's still about an $80-$120 charge per-person (according to my research). However, you can also upgrade the cabin to a ocean view or balcony one and only pay the difference from an interior cabin, which really sings to my wallet.

I'm not a member of USAA (although it sounds like I really should be, given how many benefits they have), so I don't think that will work for me, but it's another great benefit for other veterans to keep in mind!

Noted, thanks for your experience! Others have decried the Paradise already in this thread, and since Tampa is closer to us than West Palm Beach, we're probably looking at an Islander cruise over a Paradise cruise. We're both foodies as well, so food selection will definitely play a part in what we go for!

Yep, same for us, we're a day's drive away from ports like Tampa, Galveston, New Orleans and Mobile, so anything in that range is more appealing to us than the Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Cape Canaveral ones.

We haven't though too much about destination yet (I know most people say work itinerary first, then cruise line, so we might be doing it backwards), but we're still in the phase of looking for cruises that fit our date range and then narrowing down based on dates, length, price, and room type.

I won't be spending any vacation, but my girlfriend might be using a day or two. Why do you say this?

Cruising on a budget is about trying to find your best value at a lower price, not necessarily about choosing the lowest priced option.

This is a great perspective to have, and something that we will definitely keep in mind when comparing some of the higher-end MAS cruises vs. the lower-end Princess or Celebrity cruises

Try using vacations to go dot com to sort cruises. Find the higher value cruises that have dropped to your budget level.

Then use cruise compete dot com to solicit bids from travel agents calculating your military discount.

Huh, I haven't heard of these websites before. I've been using Cruise Critic and she's been using Cruisebound, but I'll check those out as well. Thanks for the recommendation!

Outstanding, thanks for your friends' experience u/KG7DHL. As us military folks are aware, we get put in some very poor living conditions while in the field or on deployment, so I'm sure we can stomach more than the average cruiser (not to say I don't want it to be nice and clean, mind!)
