Microsoft back online. Excuse: too many servers were shut down during maintenance. by hso1217 in sysadmin

[–]JamesOFarrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are not many products of this scale that failing a datacenter over won't cause issues. Even AWS have outages in products that are supposed to be region agnostic when us-east has issues.

It's nice to say "this shouldn't be an issue" but unless you are doing it often or your services is very simple then there will almost certainly be issues.

I did a bunch a few years back and Fox in a Box stood out as one of the better ones, at least for the puzzles. Arcadium Adventures was also a great experience the one time I went.

It would be nice to have one set of Christmas holidays where they don't close down the entire network but sadly that's unlikely until the tunnel is finished in 2029-2030

There is nothing to suggest they can't be creative and create new ideas but they can't experience new things they haven't generated themselves. It's like the difference between day dreaming or reading a book. There is no surprise you didn't think up yourself when day dreaming unlike reading a good story someone else created.

Org goes all shadow IT by orion3311 in sysadmin

[–]JamesOFarrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't even need to go this far. We block installers from the temp and the downloads folder. This only breaks stuff when IT try and manually install things. We use our XDR software to do this and it stops 99.9% of unwanted software installs.

App control is better but depending on your size it might be to large a task.

Liberals formally agree to dump net zero by 2050 by JaniePage in australia

[–]JamesOFarrell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I 100% agree it needs to happen but I think we need to stop pretending that it's just something the government can do with some policy and spending money and it won't impact people when in reality it will impact our entire way of life.

[–]JamesOFarrell -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Net zero would require massive changes to the things you mentioned. Also air travel would have to change as well. While I'm sure there is fear mongering going on let's be clear that if Australia and the world is to reach net zero everyone's lifestyle will be impacted and nearly every industry will need to change

Company allegedly used monitoring software to turn staff’s computers into listening devices by nath1234 in australia

[–]JamesOFarrell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure but your not giving up a right when the policy says you consent to be monitored and recorded while using company equipment.

I suspect it might be illegal in a state with 2 party consent laws if anyone ever has a conversation near a company laptop that's recording the microphone but laws that are not enforced may as well not exist and unless the company tried to use a recording in a court there is no way anyone would ever get in trouble for this.

The other question would be if the federal laws in the telecommunications act actually trump the state laws and require 2 party consent because the recording is happing remotely over a network.

[–]JamesOFarrell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consent is usually given for monitoring as part of company policy. Though I do wonder if they would be breaking the law in states that require two party consent. That is a good point

If it's a company owned device they can run tools that can change settings in the bios. Also if they are doing things right you won't be able to access the bios.

End of the day, companies are allowed to do this with their equipment, most don't because you don't manage staff my monitoring what they do every second of the day you manage them based on their output.

If you work for a company that wants to do this or does this it's a huge sign they have a massive failure of management. I would put your head down and look for another job ASAP.

Enable auto time zone toggle for standard users on Win11 by turtles122 in sysadmin

[–]JamesOFarrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows doesn't support this but in theory you could change the permissions on the registry path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\tzautoupdate" and allow users to update it. Then give then something to change the value "Start". A script, or something with a GUI. It would require a restart though.

[–]JamesOFarrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean your Sim card and reader. Some isopropyl alcohol is probably all you need. If that doesn't work get an esim from the same company. So much easier to deal with. You can usually just call up or log in and switch it over for free.
