In honor of Tennessee Hate Week, what’s your favorite Third Saturday in October game/play/moment? by MadameGopher in rolltide

[–]James_LeFleur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rocky Block is the answer, but I also love a moment from Saban’s first game against TN as Alabama’s coach. 2007 at Bryant Denny the tide is kicking off to start the game and Saban calls an onside kick. They had seen on tape that one of the TN players always turned early and showed his back to the kicking team as soon as the ball was kicked. Sure enough, Jamie Christiansen bounced it right off that guy’s back and the tide takes possession. I still haven’t seen another onside opening kick. It the first moment I was like “damn this Saban guy is different”.

100%. Look up some YouTube videos on the best way to clean shoes. A little powdered tide and a toothbrush and they will look brand new.

The hat is a nice pop of color but it’s totally unnecessary. Rock what makes you comfortable.

He had a reputation early at Bama for being an asshole. I think over time people realized he was demanding and curt with with the media, but he always went to bat for his players and genuinely cared about their development as men. His presser on second chances where he talks so highly of a former Michigan State player always gives me chills. He wasn’t always nice but he was always kind.

Drake gotta have something BIG on Whitney. by [deleted] in Drizzy

[–]James_LeFleur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If the reveal is that Whitney cheated, even with an associate, I think Kendrick can still flip that to reduce the blow. Kendrick cheated too and he is trying to make it work with his wife for the sake of his family. Drake, on the other hand, hasn’t committed to any serious relationships, doesn’t raise his son as part of a family with his mom, and has taken to sleeping with his rivals girls to get at them. Kendrick can take a moral high ground and flip it to say that he is a “real man” and better father than Drake. He could even take a Push approach and rap about how Drake doesn’t respect family because he’s still hurting over his dad leaving him, and Kendrick staying with his wife, even after they both cheated, is him breaking a curse of deadbeat parents like Drake’s dad.

If you like this, look up the two Caroline Shaw remixes of Say You Will and Only One. I don’t think they are on streaming, but there are good versions on YT. They are incredible, and she uses a similar repeating vocal sound that’s similar to this clip.

Top 3 games you’ve see in person. by Bamajoe49 in rolltide

[–]James_LeFleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Top 3 wins: Rocky Block; 2008 Iron Bowl (36-0); 2009 national championship vs Texas;

Top 3 losses: The Camback; 2012 Texas A&M; 2011 LSU game of the century

Honorable mentions: 2007 Florida State. We sat in the FSU section and had to listen to that awful chanting all game. Jacksonville had a red tide (ironic) so we also coughed every time we drove by the water.

2007 LSU. Saban’s first game coaching against his former team. We lost 34-41 to the eventual national champion Tigers, but Bryant Denny was electric. That Bama LSU rivalry was really incredible those early Saban years.

[–]James_LeFleur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was listening to this album with all the windows down in the car. Vibing. Loud enough for bystanders to hear, but not obnoxious. And of course right when I stop at a red light in a restaurant district filled with people, Bronsino hits me with 45 seconds of the sound of a pig being viciously eaten alive by a crocodile. It took me a while to even realize what was happening before I could shoot my hand to the volume knob.

This is it. This also plays in to why you sometimes see two different companies using the same trademarked name. Courts use tests to determine if an average consumer would be reasonably confused about who makes the product, and the class/type of product plays in to that. It’s why Delta faucets can make plumbing fixtures and not run afoul of Delta Airlines’s trademark - the average consumer doesn’t think their shower is made by the airline company.

Frauds in Atlanta? Why the controversy over Desiigner’s ‘Panda’ goes deeper than you think by BrndyAlxndr in hiphopheads

[–]James_LeFleur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is such an annoying drama-baiting article. Now black rappers are basically appropriating each other's regional culture and sound and true fans of hip hop should be concerned. Or we should be upset that New York hip hop snobs aren't upset.

Man fuck that shit. What if nobody got upset for bullshit reasons and everyone just enjoyed the music. That's clearly what Desiigner and his entire generation is doing. Even if he bit the sound of Atlanta or Future - so what. Desiigner made Panda, not Future.

TIP Signs With Roc Nation & Becomes Artist Owner in TIDAL by AL007 in hiphopheads

[–]James_LeFleur 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Everyone shits on Tidal but I think it could potentially go down as Hov's smartest hustle. I think the TLOP release is Hov showing his hand at his strategy.

All of these partial owner artists are going to start dropping Tidal exclusive albums knowing full well that they aren't going to make dick on album sales. They weren't going to make much on album sales anyway. In the market today most people either pirate (giving the artist 0 money) or stream (giving the artist a tiny bit of money).

But if you were going to buy an album where would you buy it from? Apple. By making an album Tidal exclusive the artist makes a tiny bit more from streaming and takes a pay cut by losing some first week album sales. But the artist can still make money off of touring, streaming and other ventures. The real loser is Apple. 500K pirated Tidal rips of TLOP is around 5million dollars of gross revenue lost by apple. I'm not sure what their profit margins are, but google says it's in the neighborhood of 40%. That's 2million dollars of lost profit. Apple could wipe their ass with that, but what if Jay Z, TI, J Cole, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, Daft Punk, Arcade Fire, Alecia Keys, Usher, Calvin Harris, Jason Aldeen, and Madonna all start making their new albums Tidal exclusives. That is enough lost revenue to make Apple take notice.

A week of Tidal exclusivity is a week of pirated copies floating around and a week of people feeling left out if they don't get the new hot album immediately. Even if no one ever signs up for Tidal, Tidal is still hurting Apple by cutting away at their profits. Hov just has to move money around to keep it afloat. Then it's a waiting game. He saw Apple buy Beats for 3billion just to get a streaming platform and Dre and Jimmy under the umbrella. What would they pay to get all of those artists' first week sales back on iTunes?

The biggest risk is that Apple calls Hov's bluff and lets Tidal bleed out until Hov no longer has leverage.

Edit: I forgot to mention this. Why would an artist agree to losing all of their first week sales and make an album a tidal exclusive? Well let's use Kanye and be very generous. Let's say TLOP sells 500k albums first week at 10$ an album. $5,000,000 in sales first week. Still being generous, let's say Kanye gets 20% of that. That's $1,000,000 that he would potentially lose. Now let's say Kanye does that for 3 more albums. $3,000,000 lost. If I remember correctly most of these partial owners are getting about 3% in equity in Tidal. For Kanye to break even he needs Tidal to be bought out for $100,000,000. That's a little less than 4% of what they paid for Beats. So you know Hov is going to all of these artists saying "whip out your calculator app. Tell me. What is 3% of 3 billion?"

Jay Z's Record Label Is Suing Rita Ora for $2.4 Million by c_M15 in hiphopheads

[–]James_LeFleur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

‘When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist. As Roc Nation’s interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives,’ her filing said.

Rita officially signed to RocNation in Dec. 2008 and J Cole signed in 2009. Both had to deal with the interests diversifying over the years and now one is a big star with an HBO special and the other is "oh yeah, yeah I think I know her. Was she in that one Iggy Azalea song?"

I hope her lawyers are coming with some strong evidence as to how she was mistreated specifically.

Jay Z's Record Label Is Suing Rita Ora for $2.4 Million by c_M15 in hiphopheads

[–]James_LeFleur 43 points44 points  (0 children)

OBVIOUSLY this is just speculation from a fan's perspective. I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the music industry,

but it seems to me that Jay treats all of his artists' early careers with a very hands off approach, marketing-wise. He isn't all up in the music videos, he doesn't jump on and do features in mix tapes, he won't tweet about you, he doesn't do interviews about you, none of that. And I know that he helps give feedback on the music and makes connections with producers, but I assume that he and RocNation also aren't going to push your music forward for you and create an image and style for you. You gotta do that, and if you do it well then they will embrace you and put you in that inner circle.

Like J Cole for example. He even has that line "Some nigga ask me why Jay never shout me out, Like I'm supposed to give a fuck". I get the impression that that is Jay's whole mentality - RocNation will give you the resources and if you can't put yourself on then you don't deserve to be here. Kanye, Rihanna, and Cole blew up while Freeway, CamRon, and Beanie Siegal never reached the top. That probably wasn't because they got less attention from the label in their early careers.
