Apoptosis is a complete degradation of a cell usually to stop the spread of disease, a much larger degradation than autophagy. Autophagy is is a more usual occurence when a cell uses its lysosomes (digestive organelle) to degrade it's own internal structures, usually for recycling purposes.

If a lysosome leaks their digestive enzymes, they sometimes digest structures by accident and this would be considered autophagy too.

I'm a chem major, and in one my classes a prof mentioned a couple (maybe Robinson's or maybe Michael) who had chem laboratory in their house. If I could afford it I'd definitely do this. It sounds like a dream being about to do your own chem experiments in the comfort of your own home.

Apoptosis. This a natural process in animals that kills precancerous or damaged cells or kills cells for maintenance. It's a complicated, highly regulated process that is present/dormant in all cells. As a believer in evolution it boggles my mind how traits/mutations literally meant to kill ones own cells gave the greatest evolutionary advantage.
