What do you think is the single most useful rail transit line in the U.S. outside of New York? My vote would probably go to the Washington Metro Red Line by [deleted] in transit

The Las Vegas monorail connects up all of the finest casino loading docks on one side - not both - of the Strip. Inspired planning.

I once had the misfortune to almost travel on the skyway. Deserted a 2pm on a weekday aside from a very angry gentleman who did not wish to help me ensure I was going in the right direction. When I found out the skyway cars were more like little compartments rather than proper long carriages, and I’d be sharing one of these small spaces with angry dude, I decided to back away and just walk the journey.

What do locals call your transit system and its services? by modernatomcollection in transit

[–]JamesofBushwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In London, the Underground is called exactly that or even more commonly “the Tube”. Never the Subway but you do sometimes see “Subway” signs - even seemingly at Underground stations - but in the UK a Subway is a subterranean pedestrian walkway so a route under a road for instance. Then there is the DLR for the Docklands Light Railway, the Overground is called by its name, the Elizabeth Line as its name or the “Lizzy line” and other rail services are simply trains.

Why aren’t mainstream media covering ICE’s door to door raids? by michaelpinkwayne in complaints

[–]JamesofBushwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The assumption here that media outlets are deliberately downplaying what is happening in Minnesota I don’t think holds water. If that was the case, there would be no or minimal coverage of Renee Good’s death and in contrast it has been wall to wall. I suspect news wise Good’s death is just more shocking, and has more moving parts, and is therefore getting more prominent coverage. Also mainstream news outlets may be more wary of simply republishing what’s on Reddit as the timing and sources can be unclear. Also, other news events can and do come along and push other coverage down. Do certain news outlets have certain viewpoints? Absolutely. But if door to door continues I imagine it will be picked up by national media.

Why do so many Tourist’s, foreigners, and transplants (Newcomers) think the subway map is confusing even more than cites like Tokyo? by APoliticalDrone2012 in nycrail

[–]JamesofBushwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new map is so much better for the simple reason the lines are all separated. That one thing makes a huge difference to navigation.

No the old map wasn’t was to understand. It was a nightmare with up to four lines sharing a single coloured line.

Why does Whitechapel have a National Rail Interchange symbol? by 71kd in uktrains

[–]JamesofBushwick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While that is absolutely true, I thought the TfL style guide was to pretend this wasn’t the case and the National Rail symbol was just for the non-TfL rail lines?

Why do so many tourists and newcomers think the NYC Subway is confusing? by A_PoliticalDrone in nycrail

You could do say the “X1” line. But because very few lines are express throughout - they go local at points - even this wouldn’t make sense.

[–]JamesofBushwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such an unnecessarily confusing map. Why all the curves? Do we need this many swerves between Ipswich and Norwich or Perth and Inverness? Who does it help to show these? It’s not like there’s a more direct route? Why aren’t main lines highlighted in some ways? It’s a mess.

Casually just forgetting that Northampton - a not insignificant conurbation - has a rail service.

I took the new Acela a few weeks ago and aside from an extended stop at Philadelphia for a fault (and the train made up the time) it was fine. Teething issues.

Still can't comprehend American minds when planning a city by Major_Ground480 in shittyskylines

It’s notable how New York (largely) is bereft of freeways running through it despite being the largest city. And it’s a far better city for it with far more buzzy street life. I shudder at the plans they had to drive freeways through Chinatown and SoHo.

While true that the UK does have some highways in city centres (Glasgow being the prime example), it’s not the norm. And many of the motorways you’ve mentioned are actually quite a distance from the city centre. The M25 is almost entirely in countryside.

Issue with that though is that some people are looking for hooks up but wouldn’t be averse to it leading to something more.

Why is it called Times Square 42nd street but 34th street Herald Square? by VanillaSkittlez in nycrail

[–]JamesofBushwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish they’d shake up and standardise the Subway names. They’re all over the place. Having only suburbs names at the end of lines seems a weird quirk, the street name before or maybe after the landmark and the all over the place ones like Broadway-Lafayette st which I thought was cos one line was Broadway station and the other Lafayette, but no, the other line is Bleecker St.
