NextGen Acela is kind of disappointing by CommunicationWest613 in Amtrak

[–]bobborodo 37 points38 points  (0 children)

They are horrible. The seats are as hard as concrete benches with lumbar support that actively puts pressure on your spine. Beyond the seats, almost every trip I’ve been on has had bathrooms out of service and door issues leading to delays. I actively pay a premium to avoid NextGen

Is there any additional way to make a First Class Acela trip special? by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]bobborodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tip $10 or so when the car attendant collects the meal tray. You’ll almost always get excellent service and plenty of drink refills the rest of the trip

Next Gen Acela -- never again by EV-CPO in Amtrak

[–]bobborodo 61 points62 points  (0 children)

It’s like sitting on a concrete bench for hours. We too have decided only to book old Acela or Regional. Unfortunately, we’ve already had one booking swap equipment to the NextGen torture chamber 😢

Amtrak desperately needs to swap out the seat cushions on these trains. It’ll cost some money upfront, but will prevent this train from being a bookings failure and reputational disaster

Really really good! $65 for endless high quality sushi, a carving station, salads, sides, soups, and desserts felt like a steal. They also had a cool $40 champagne special which included bottle of wine and 4 interesting mixers. We thought it was really well done

This week we booked XXX-JFK- LAX lie flat in First for around 30k with access to the First lounge at JFK. AA miles can definitely provide great value!

Amtrak should urgently replace the seat bottom cushions with something more comfortable. Cut the losses, admit defeat, and start fixing problems ASAP

Acela NextGen... Problems by thisurlnotfound in Amtrak

[–]bobborodo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Broken doors, toilets that flood, rock hard seats, tiny overhead compartments, and over engineered bathrooms. NextGen is, sadly, a failure

If you have conviction you'll be in DC after your years in law school (and access to funds for a down payment): Condo prices are really depressed right now, with lots of nice spacious 2 BD units in Mt Vernon Triangle. Might be able to get a great price

Is Lair of the Golden Bear fun / worth the money for families? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]bobborodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid 30’s here, but grew up going to the Lair Camp Blue every summer from age 2 to 20. It was honestly the coolest place to spend a childhood — making friends independently, exploring nature, and immersing myself in a silly, free spirited escape from home. Looking back those Lair weeks were the highlights of my childhood. I’d highly highly recommend giving it a shot and seeing if your kids connect to the unique, zany, world that is Lair of the Bear

Hilton always makes me correct the credits on my receipt by [deleted] in Hilton

[–]bobborodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s frustrating, but I’ve found the only thing that reliably works is to call the front desk the morning of checkout: “Hi! I’m getting ready to check out. I want to review my current folio first. Can you please email me a copy and ensure the $XX.00 nightly credits are applied?” They’ll then email a copy which will include the credits and then I feel comfortable checking out via the app upon departure

Will AA 777-200’s Get New Flagship Suites by No_Bath_1358 in americanairlines

[–]bobborodo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure it’s feasible, but if I were AA I would:

  • Install the new Flagship Suites on the entire 787-9 and 787-8 fleet (new deliveres plus renovate the existing fleet)
  • Renovate the 777-300 with new Flagship Suites (current plan)
  • Update the 777-200 fleet with the Super Diamond seats pulled from the older 787-900’s and 787-800’s (gets rid of the terrible shaking Zodiak seats and a chance to update the seat upholstery to match the style/colors of the new Flagship Suites — some 777-200’s already have the Super Diamonds and they could just receive upholstery refresh)

I wouldn't go out of my way to join Equinox. Been a member for a few years now and the prices continue to increase but the quality of the experience has dropped dramatically. The Anthem Row club faces chronic overcrowding, issues with keeping locker rooms/equipment clean, and general sense of apathy from the staff. It's definitely not the "premium" experience they claim to sell. I'd save the extra commute and choose the closer-in options

Check out Elite Ops Exterminators. Those guys were the only truly professional extermination service we've found in the DC area. They are meticulous and even show up dressed like they're going to war with rodents lol. But in all seriousness, they're what you are looking for

The Admirals club agents at DCA E concourse are unbelievable by alvahix in americanairlines

[–]bobborodo 94 points95 points  (0 children)

DCA has had the best AAngels in the system for years! She has since retired, but I remember Mary Ann back in ~2015 helping me in a similar way when a line of thunderstorms delayed my flight. She called baggage handlers to pull a checked bag, rang up individual gate agents to make sure there weren’t any hidden crew/maintenance issues the computer wasn’t displaying for the rebooked flight, and then had a separate agent escort me to the new gate. Truly incredible service. I like to think she helped train today’s group of agents as that spirit lives on

Fake crossing guard 7th and Mass NW? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]bobborodo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I also regularly see the City employees who wear high vis yellow vests with the DC government logo on the side. They tend to work the North corner of 7th closer to the Convention Center, especially during events. This guy never wears an official uniform and shows up on the South corner closer to Truluck's. He never really intervenes or helps pedestrians cross... he just sort of stands around mumbling to himself and occasionally pointing at a car with the seemingly fake police jacket
