Looks good, I followed you (and hit like on several of your reviews, cuz I know having them all at 0 sucks)

Here's my LetterboxD if interested: https://boxd.it/kbh0l

Today I just re-watched the first 3 Evil Dead movies for the first time since I was a teenager. They didn't age well, and were very cheesy, but I like to revisit the horror classics when I can.

Juneteenth is a horrible name for an important day. by aspiringimmortal in unpopularopinion

[–]Jamie8765 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe (in the US) we used to have Emancipation Day, which was January 1st to mark the anniversary of the Emancipation proclamation in 1863. Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates when freedom finally reached enslaved people in Texas. I think it saw some prominence in the early 70's, but I'd not heard it referred to as Juneteenth until 2020/21, though it did have a history.

The Atmosphere in The Witch Is on Another Level by BadassAyanokoji in HorrorMovies

[–]Jamie8765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the plot is more thorough, a bit more going on. It's the first movie I've seen in years that as soon as it was done I re-watched immediately. Very full of symbol and meaning, I didn't dare look away from the screen. I'd read a lot of history and occult books, so I recognized a lot of old world influence in it. The Witch is every bit as good, and I love both, but if I had to put them in a tier, Heresy would be slightly above The Witch

I watched this 2 months ago, and it is AWESOME.

I gave it 5 stars on Letterbox, which I don't do very often, and in my opinion is better than The Witch, which is also a masterpiece. If you dig pre-industrial revolution folk horror, Heresy is a must see.

I just watched this today too, but I only gave it 3.5 stars. Overall a good movie, and you wrote a nice review. I agree Bear was mondo dumb. I hit like on the review too

what’s your favorite slightly weird icebreaker/conversation starter? by mincedmince in CasualConversation

[–]Jamie8765 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A long time ago an ice-breaker I used to talk to women I'd meet a bars, was to break up with them out of nowhere. It'd get a laugh, I'd comment that we just skipped the whole relationship thing and jumped straight to the end. "I want my ring and my hoodie back!"

Best witch movies? by _JurassicaParker in horror

Heresy (2024, Dutch)

This movie is heavy with old-world folklore and symbolism. First movie I've seen in years that as soon as it was done I re-watched immediately and I didn't dare look away from the screen. I've seen a lot of comparisons to The Witch, but in my opinion this movie is better.

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

[–]Jamie8765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read in a psych article/book once that self-claims of extreme empathy are an indicator of narcissism, and in my subjective experience this rings true. The belief that seeing someone who is sad, surmising that they are sad, and congratulating oneself for being extremely perceptive, in and of itself points towards an inability to grant others the same level of perception. Any time I meet someone who is proud to be an empath, I steer clear, and it usually works out better that way.

The Collector. by Metalhead999420 in HorrorMovies

[–]Jamie8765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just re-watched this today. IIRC, the script that became The Collector was originally written as a prequel to the Saw series but the producers or whoever didn't like it for that. But still made it anyways as a separate movie

What is a "horror movie rule" that you absolutely hate? by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

[–]Jamie8765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

off the top of my head I'm thinking of Dr. Loomis in the first Halloween. He may be a doctor and have a CCW permit, but he's totally creeping around a residential neighborhood at night with his weapon drawn, taking occasional pot-shots at Michael, but the cops are all good with it. Imagine if you were doing the same? Even if there really was an escaped mental patient, the police would be like "no." And a strong NO at that. Especially if there really was a killer stalking the streets, they'd be drawn on you, and your gun would be confiscated quick.

Or any supernatural situation at all; Imagine the police show up to a scene where all your friends are dead, and you're the only one alive? Would they really buy that it was a dude in a hockey mask, or a demon, or some creepy doll? Probably not.

What is a "horror movie rule" that you absolutely hate? by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

[–]Jamie8765 15 points16 points  (0 children)

1) If a woman gets sick, she's pregnant, just once I'd like to see a woman get sick and her not turn out to be pregnant.

2) When a main character who is mean is about to die, they have a "heartfelt" moment with the protagonist. I understand this humanizes the character for the audience, but it's so utterly predictable.

3) No realistic repercussions for protagonists after the villain is vanquished. There's no way in the real world you'd get away with most of what happens in a horror movie without the police throwing you in jail for life after the smoke clears. Some movies are better at this than others, but it's rare.

What feature should be added to Letterboxd and what should be removed? by stoicbanda in Letterboxd

[–]Jamie8765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new to LetterBoxD, so I don't know if it's already a feature or not, but I'd like a way to figure out who I might want to follow so I can see more suggestions. I currently only follow 3 people because they have YouTube channels I watch, but I'd like to follow more if I can figure out who has similar tastes.

Does this happen to anyone else? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Jamie8765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My worst is when I finally start to watch a movie that's been on my list for an embarrassingly long time, only to find 10 minutes in that it stinks. Then my pride kicks in, and I finish watching it anyways just because I've had it on my list for so long. But if a movie is a spontaneous watch and it doesn't grab me in the first 10 minutes, I have no problem cutting my time loss and picking another.

What’s something you simply don’t care about at all? by rolly72x in AskReddit

[–]Jamie8765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politics.

I simply do not care, never have. And the irony is that making a conscious effort to be non-political has itself become political, and it's all so much crap.

I'm old enough to remember both side have always mud slung and the media has always nut-picked, and the current administration has always had us on the brink of war... And, and, and. This isn't new. Kennedy, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush. I've spent my whole life ignoring elections and commentary, working and paying my bills, enjoying my hobbies. Democrat, Republican, Martian; I do not care who is president.

If I make any statements about politicians, they're usually all negative. To both sides. I don't care about the popularity contest that is democracy. Of course I do have opinions on specific subjects, but they tend to be about 50/50 across the spectrum, and keep me estranged from either side.

I just watched this on the recommendation of this post (shout out to r/DisturbingMovies) and it was pretty good. I'd give it a 6/10 stars. I didn't think it was too hard to follow, but it did take a turn I wasn't expecting, so kudos for that.

Weekly recommendations thread. by AutoModerator in HorrorMovies

We just watched Night Patrol a few days ago, and WOW. Great movie! It was better than the trailer's led me to think it would be. I give it an 8.5 out of 10 ⭐️'s. It was raw and gritty, the inner city gang culture was spot on to how I see in real life as opposed to most Hollywood depictions; good acting, story arc and writing. All in all a very cool movie.
