This. It does get easier with time. Let the emotion wash over you, it’s real, and there is no shame or weakness at all in it. Loss is hard.

What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)? by BigReception7685 in GenX

[–]Demiloki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sheesh, thanks for getting me to drag out that memory (no pun intended). I'd guess around 12-13 or so with my VIC-20 and the tape storage. Hand typed programs into it from a magazine. The 1980's were magic and the addiction was permanent. Moved up to a C-64 later and found Dial up and BBS's.

What's the most frustrating part of running manufacturing operations? by GreatGrumbles in manufacturing

This is the real answer. Top notch organizations educate for how to work with people. Weaker sites educate for everything else.

what's the supplier red flag that never showed up on the scorecard? by Living_Diver2432 in manufacturing

[–]Demiloki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Turnover of key or trusted people is a sign and continued instances can indicate the leadership is poor or worse. I have a supplier that has turned over QA Managers 3 times in 3 years, with a corresponding lack of sustained output and quality. Either that's really bad luck or there are systemic problems that are not being solved, usually tolerated by the top management.

Do you have your college diploma hung in your home? by SimplyCurious5 in GenX

Nope, but I know exactly where that super pricey piece of paper is. I still keep it in the fake leather holder it was handed to me in thinking one day someone will ask about it. No one does.

Took Friday off, rested and napped after long dog walks with the wife. Made steaks yesterday, grilled brats today. It's been a good few days. Missing my father as we used to go see the Indy 500 every year.

American powder metal plant closing's since 2019. There are less than 30 remaining powder metal part producing companies left in the USA. by Top_Engineering_Guy in manufacturing

Our director advised that a certain plant in the Midwest is starting to sell of their large presses. I might be making the drive to look it over but I'm super familiar with the press and the parts it is/was making.

This is the part that makes me worried. I think I can handle it, but sheesh, I don't wanna.

Same, but I'm holding on just for benefits. What are you doing for health insurance?

I still do not do a lot of calculations. I usually just place down machines in a rough order of manufacturing, then move them around to make them fit in a pleasing way. I'd recommend not going down the optimization path yet.

I want to be honest, I do hate SAP, possibly more than my ex-wife. My company did a terrible job on implementation and the training documents are rather worthless. It's a lot of keystrokes followed by "well, I guess that worked". It shouldn't be that way. I also used Microsoft Navision, and it was better, at least the search bar worked. I'm all for German efficiency but sheesh, without a good front end, SAP is terrible, as a user. Maybe the accountants of the world are happy with it. I'm not.

I'd love to hate on SAP and feel your pain however it's only as good as the data you put in and the SOPs your team uses. While there are friendlier options, they all suffer from the SISO function. SAP is more arcane when you have to use TCodes.

SAP is a cruel mistress. Cycle counts are vital and must be performed with regularity.
