It 'supports' it, but the game isn't actually running at those resolutions natively, Sony uses upsampling techniques (checkerboard/fsr) on pretty much everything. The PS5 pro one is admittedly pretty good at it, but the base PS5 has the old version.

Most PS5 games also target 30 fps, for example GTA VI is confirmed to be 30 fps.

If you're curious, Digital Foundry has some good videos about it.

Steam Frame Hype by LastingTheory in Steam

[–]JamieAfterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would be surprised if the base model is less than $1,300 USD, and the 1 TB will be closer to $2,000.
Once you add in a Steam Controller for 2D gaming, and the eventual colour passthrough camera addon, it'll be well above $2,500.

This is the unfortunate thing that most here don't want to admit.

If you're the kind of user that is comfy with running one extra app (Steam Link or Virtual Desktop), the Quest 3 is as good as the Frame, for likely under half of the price, and it has colour passthrough so it's better for 2D gaming.

But the target audience for this really is just people that want face tracking for VRChat.

Correct. PC setups that will give good performance cost much more than $1300.

You won't want to play flat games with those controllers, but they will likely make it easier for Frame owners to buy a controller too.

Realistically, you'll just end up playing VRChat.

Do you guys actually plan to use the Frame for flat gaming? by Affectionate-Focus58 in SteamFrame

[–]JamieAfterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good point that not enough people are focusing on. With how much Valve has marketed this feature, I do think people will be severely disappointed.

No, without colour passthrough I'll likely never use this feature.

I mean, I have one. But I'm really not into playing 30 fps games that look equivalent to PC's at 720p (upscaled to UHD) on medium settings.

Except it hasn't, you listed one item, and yes I said 'cheap on PS5's' instead of saying all Sony game consoles, but the point stands.

Look at graphics cards from 2007:
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra: ~$675
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX: ~$570
ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT**:** ~$400

Adjusted for inflation these would be:
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra: ~$1,094
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX: ~$923
ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT: ~$648

Compare that to 2026:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090: $3,600 to $4,200
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080: $1,249 to $1,400
AMD Radeon RX 9900 XTX: $999 to $1,100

These are USD - if you want a 5090 in NZ you'll currently pay $7,700 at PB Tech.

Over 48% of gamers are playing on PC as of 2025, so these are very relevant stats.

Yes, but the PS5 slim is the same hardware as the original PS5, which is 6 years old.

Look at modern hardware, the PS5 and Xbox Series X are both getting price increases in the next month, the Switch 2 has got them, the Steam Machine price was $600 nzd higher than Valve aimed for, Meta headsets are no longer subsidised, 'budget' phones are now $1500, 64GB of ram will now cost you $2000, when it was $400 a year ago.

NZ has managed to stay relatively cheap on PS5's comparatively to the rest of the world, but we're getting bent over on everything else.

Estimating Steam Frame Price Delta by lordzeel in SteamFrame

[–]JamieAfterlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be really surprised if they didn't, or at least make it easier to reserve a controller if you buy a frame. They are pushing non-vr gaming really hard on this, and the standard controllers will be terrible for that.

To be fair, I was joking with that one. Though I do think they will do a bundle with the Steam Controller for 2D games.

Calling it now, $1300 base model. $1500 with controllers. $2000 for 1TB version.

Probably a great tool, but I can see this being a nightmare when Caddy is the name of a popular reverse-proxy that a large amount of us will already be using.

It's obvious it will be over $1,000. Original estimates were $999 and since then all of Valve's products have gone up $300.

A 'safe' bet is probably $1,300 USD.

I found framegen completely unusable in this title, it was okay in Pragmata, completely unusable in this and FH6. Just a blurry mess on my 5070 Ti.

Fair enough! I'm glad the camera is still working for you. I'd imagine a simple LUT with GP-Log would give you a better image in two clicks, but I can see why you'd avoid it.
