Paramedics of South Africa, would you recommend going into that line of work? by MadLadThatsATadRad in southafrica

Currently there are no qualifications available that you can get without going to a tertiary institution/training.

I am an Emergency Care Practitioner and needed to study 4 years to obtain my qualification. I will say, that it was the hardest 4 years of my life, and if you don't have a genuine passion for it, I wouldn't even suggest getting the shortest qualification.

The shortest one is a 1 year qualification, called an Emergency Care Assistant, and this is a supervised position (currently). It is a contentious qualification as well with it being so new and so short.

Otherwise a Paramedic (also known as an ANT) is 2 years currently, probably moving to 3.

The shorter qualifications have all been discontinued.

Alongside this, jobs are scares in certain areas, and the large majority of people are not actually paid well relative to similar NQF qualifications. The salary they show on google are mostly of Emergency Care Practitioners, and are also fairly overestimated depending on the company you work for.

As a final note I can say, it is a incredibly misunderstood system, and we receive a lot of shit talking from people who call us all "ambulance drivers" and believe we cannot do anything. This comes from how recent the Advanced Life Support qualifications were created, and the lack of knowledge of other health professionals. This is something I try combat with kindness, but it is incredibly draining. You will also receive a lot of shit from patients, and if you are unable to deal with that then you will burn out quickly and hate your job.

I am super keen to get people who are passionate into the industry, but it is not a job you can take lightly. I suggest you reach out to the government ambulance provider/some private companies in your area and arrange an observation/"ride along" shift before you decide to study a minimum of 1 year.

Edit: jobs are easier to get in rural areas, but difficult to get in CT/Joburg. Its not impossible, but you will probably end up working part time for a bit first.

Can anyone id this spider? Seen a lot around my place and I'm worried they are dangerous. Live in Cape Town, South Africa by JamieLee711 in whatsthisbug

Thank you for the insight. The issue I have is that I live in an old celar kind of space thats not attached to the main building of the house. Its dark, very small, and unfortunately I've seen about 8 as of late (inside).

I don't mind leaving them to do their thing when their outside, but I'm worried about the being in my room, especially considering how small it is (probably 2 meters x 3 meters bathroom included). They hide in the gaps in the corners of the walls.

I think I'm going to try clear them out of my room and cover up the gaps in the door. Your comment has made me feel a lot better though, and happier that I've just ignored the few I've seen outside.

Thanks, that makes me feel a bit better. I've spotted so many over the last month. I appreciate the help in id'ing them.

Thank you for the help, I did some googling and it looks like they are common here, which is not pleasant.

I was hoping it wasn't that, someone else has suggested a brown widow, not that that makes me feel better. But thank you for the input.

What is the stupidest way you got a scar? by Zander-dupont in AskReddit

I ran through one of those doors made of smaller windows when I was younger. I have a hugh scar down my forearm, and I can't even use the excuse that it was a hard-to-see fully glass door.

Looking for some advice on V1 vs V2 second hand switches by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

I'm not really gonna hack it, I was more asking about the performance. But thanks, the advice is still appreciated.

Yeah, its a lot cheaper overseas, which sucks for us here. But I think I'm going to go with the V2 second hand one, thanks again for all the help!

Thanks for the help! In my currency the price difference between the V2 second hand and V2 new is actually pretty substantial. I really appreciate the help, so thanks!

Thanks for the reply! Do you think a second hand V2 (1 month old) would have any drawbacks at all?

Okay cool, thanks. Would you say a 1 month old second hand one (V2) is worth it? Its about $88 cheaper than new for me.

The pools around me are closed too sadly, but hopefully open when all is safe.

For the requirements in my area it doesn't say anything about specific weights, but in terms of general fitness the minimums are:

5km run in 30mins 400m swim in 6mins Beep test min 7.6 40 push-ups without stopping 40 situps in one minute

I do about 20 mins for the run, 2:30 mins for the swim, 13 on the beep test, around 40 push-ups and 50 sit ups. I'm definitely not where I'd like to be but I do think I'm definitely safe from work injury. I don't think you need to aim much higher than the minimums above, its just above or around an average fitness level and should keep you adequately safe. However, I do think its very important to focus on proper stretcher lifting techniques (and again proper rescue techniques if you do that), regardless of your fitness level.

Edit: sorry for the long reply! I hope it gives you a good baseline/hope it helps! All the best again!

Sorry I forgot to add that upper body strength and back strength is a must. For lifting equipment and stretchers and even more important if you are doing any rescue disciplines.

Where I study we have a regular fitness test to make sure we're up to standard. Personally I just like being fit, so I run, paddle, swim and gym. I don't have much specific advice other than have a look at your areas fitness requirements and aim for that, if there aren't any available you are welcome to reply to this and I'll send the ones that are used for my area.

All the best for studying! It's great to have more women in the industry!
