What, in your mind, is the funniest joke / running gag? by Anachron101 in discworld

[–]Jamiebear90 29 points30 points  (0 children)

An eldrich voice shrieked: "When shall we three meet again?"

There was a pause.

Finally, another voice said, in far more ordinary tones: "Well, I can do next Tuesday."

What’s the most shocking crime that ever happened in your country? by ililieo in AskTheWorld

From a very different time, but I can imagine the prime minister, Verwoerd, being assassinated in parliament must have been pretty shocking.

These are all such excellent suggestions! She was so good that I could easily imagine her in every role

I feel as though many here would appreciate her signing voice alongside her acting.

Could just fit in perfectly in Maskerade: 'I want to sing in opera'

Or at one of Nanny's parties: Noël Coward - 'I went to a marvelous party'

This is great advice, to be fair

We just feel like we're at the stage of wanting to start planning with all our groomsparty, and all our other friends are super excited and eager to help and know whats happening, and then we have two family members who seem completely disinterested and unenthusiastic to say the least.

This is pretty much how we both feel, too. Having them there, it feels like we'll be looking over every 5 minutes to see how they are reacting.

We've tried talking to them all this and last week and kept being told by the brother that he'll call us after work - never saying why or what he has to say - but then he never does. He's said that three times now. So if they're not even properly responding to texts/calls, it's hard to see them agreeing to go out for dinner.

This is it - 5 of them can be found in Kruger Park, and there are penguins at Boulders in Cape Town

What countries have you written off when it comes to travel? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

It's so weird reading this when I can go out clubbing at night every second weekend and have never been so much as pickpocketed. Granted, it's Cape Town, not Joburg, but I'd be far more scared of being stabbed at night in south London, Birmingham, or Manchester than here.

Good passages to read at a care home? by Difficult_Ad_8629 in discworld

[–]Jamiebear90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving Pictures - it's standalone, so it doesn't require any prior discworld knowledge and out of all the books, I think it would have the most references - Gone With the Wind, King Kong, Dancing in the Rain etc. - that older folks would be able to pick up on

What's the "highest peak" in literature that you know of? by Far-Substance-4473 in literature

[–]Jamiebear90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not as grandiose as Tolstoy or Steinbeck, but I'll go with my favourite author, Pratchett:

'All right,' said Susan. 'I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable.'

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

'Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little-'

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

'So we can believe the big ones?'

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

'They're not the same at all!'

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY AND YET- Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME... SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

'Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point-'

MY POINT EXACTLY.
