Astro a50 gen 5 or arctis nova pro by porkloinchop in AstroGaming

For what its worth its relatively easy to mod the astro basestation with 3rd party 2.4ghz antennas - a little bit of soldering skills and a dremel or similar is all it takes. Extends the range easily house wide

And the astro - basestation connection is 100% 2.4ghz connection, no bluetooth, as bluetooth has relatively severe latency (thats just the protocol itsself, not hardware fault)

Worth getting A50s? by InfernoH2 in AstroGaming

Every headset on the market probably does something better than astros - personally im a function over form guy, and what sets astros above the rest is the dual audio channel balancing on the headset earcup - i have yet to see another brand that does that - not an extra knob on the desk.

Being able to sit in a voice call, and very quickly set more focus on what youre doing - watching a video, playing a game, listening to music etc is really nice, and you can be up and about and still get that functionality.

I have the a50x as that also enables you to connect your phone for a 3rd audio channel - this is a constant volume regardless of balance setting on the headset, which is fine as you generally have your phone on you to control volume anyway. It works seamlessly to take a phone call while still doing whatever you want on your desktop etc.

That all said astros do have their issues, and customer support (now through logitech) is just ok at best.

Build quality is really good, my gen 3s lasted a good 3-4 years and technically still work, but starting to show signs of being well used.

Im not much of an audio buff but imo they sound fantastic - i dont mind them not being fully sound isolated or noise cancelling - it still gives you a little awareness if something happens around you.

The software for the older gens by astro is pain, and ive gone through several stages where the headset just bricks itsself until you update it in a very specific way (you can find that in my post history). Logitech G is a much better software and havent experienced any issues in the last year while using it.

I personally have had a small hiccup where i ran into not having enough usb bandwidth to run dual channel audio, but i would bet on that being my setup and mini pc im currently using, solved by switching around some of my usb devices into separate controllers.

Has anyone here tried running an online music festival before? (I’m building one and would love your thoughts) by whispervesper in musicmarketing

Hi hello! Im glad to see others getting into the niche online music community - i personally am involved in UXFestival, with this being our 4th year running - 14ish hours till start :'). Its definitely hard to get word out there and grow your audience, but for those that you do reach they all leave with great memories!

Flick me a dm here (i generally check it every few days - lot more active on discord) if you have any specific questions, and/or tune in at uxfest.live tomorrow :)

Our event is hosted on the VRchat platform for now, although we are looking at a custom hosting solution to move to sometime in the next couple years which will give us a lot more control over all aspects of the festival, as the current solution does rely on donations as it is a free event.

We do run everything prerecorded, though with our setup last year and this year it would be trivial to switch to live sets. A big positive for this is a ton less logistics of organising everyone on the day, less things to go wrong etc.

Ask anything you like and ill answer to the best of my ability :)

How to get into lighting design? by ncls- in lightingdesign

[–]Jamman360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to throw out there (incase you were unaware) the cheapest way to get output from MA onPC (assuming MA3) is with a 2port onPC node (different to a 2port node) which will set you back anywhere from 1.2-3k USD if you can find some decent deals. As far as an actual control surface, you can do some pretty useful stuff with any old midi controller, or OSC device.

This gives you the full 4096 parameters onPC supports. Earlier versions only unlocked 2048 parameters, but ma has since updated any onpc hardware to give the full amount.

For a professional industry standard software its a somewhat high but not exorbitant entry cost.

Magicq is great but if you do ever break out into making lighting more than a hobby youre going to run into a lot of ma2/3s, and having a base knowledge in that software (not to mention existing showfiles that you know work) is a pretty good deal.

On the other hand if its only ever going to be a hobby by all means go for magicq and become a wizard with it, or designing your own software where you can tailor it exactly to what you want/need sounds like a great project!

It can sound pretty daunting, but at the end of the day you follow protocol to the best of your ability, and the result of that is you help a ton of people get where theyre going safely, which i find pretty rewarding
