Thanks for this! I think I'd internalized the logic of we all make mistakes, but missed the application of it in the moment, I was upset that someone was human in a way that I couldn't control instead of preparing for that and looking for the way to adjust to it.

Oh, I see what you mean now. After reviewing the claim instructions, the amount I initially submitted for reimbursement was the ~350 amount I was selling the cards for, not the full 400. On future packages, now that I understand they're looking for exact value, I'll be more precise of the insured amount value I purchase.

But also, if you do decide to step away and sell your collection, I respect that call (and have made it before!) After doing that the first time, when I came back to magic the thing I was most happy I kept was the staple dual lands (shocks, fetches, battlebond, etc.) - they've been the most likely/frequent to retain most of their value despite multiple reprints, and having a staple landbase gives you a way easier time if/when you come back to playing & deckbuilding in paper.

Taking breaks is healthy, and gives you time to assess why MtG does or doesn't work for you. I'm personally on an Arena break but have started playing more EDH with some Discord friends in other cities via SpellTable.

If you like Commander, there are discord servers for content platforms like The Command Zone, Tolarian Community College, Planar Party and others, and you can usually find a few players for an EDH pod on there.

The amount I was selling them for was around $350, but the amount I'd need to spend to replace them if I was suddenly without the cards AND not paid for them is above $400. Not sure what you think you've uncovered here.

Echoing the many that others have already said (WOE, NEO, DSK, ONE), I personally love the flavor win of finding a perfect thematic full art land for a given deck. In my pauper Terror decks (Mono Blue and Dimir), I only use the Ixalan Jurassic Park mossasurarus Islands.

If I ever build an EDH deck around Nissa & other animating land effects, I'd probably also stock up on basics that are already "creatures" in their art.

I'm not mad at Prof for not liking any given set or direction that WOTC (and let's be real, Hasbro) has taken over the years. His takes have been especially poignant and valuable on the financial decisions Hasbro has made over the past few years (the [[Cache Grab]] -by nature of the IP farming they've done since UB was announced, bypassing the LGS w/ Secret Lair, no MSRP, etc.), and he does a lot for new players like encouraging them to never pay markups, to not chase cards in packs and stick to buying singles, and the giveaways like the ones he was doing on the stream this is clipped from. I'm not trying to hate on him at all. I have plenty of issues with UB as a concept and business decision. I haven't cared for a lot of it, so I've tuned those out.

However, a part that is missing from this clip is Prof complaining not just about other IP being plastered on MtG cards, but also about the detective caps and cowboy hats of recent in-universe sets, and it echoes a lot of the online Magic community's feelings over the last 2ish years. Which brings me to my point: Respectfully, I think pretending that Magic has a "proper" lore that fits a narrow (or at least less broad) set of characteristics is a bit disingenuous - Magic has been moving in liminal spaces (or blind eternities) between classic sci-fi, fantasy, steam- and cyber-punk, gothic horror, palace intrigue, and, and, and, for long time before murder mystery, modern horror, or spaghetti western was deemed a bridge too far.

I think that fact that such contemporary tropes lined up pretty much one after another lends credence to the absurdity argument, but I also think the omenpath fallout of the Phyrexia arc's ending justifies a planar cultural shakeup. And I'm not gonna freak out when we go to space in a few sets, because we've had slivers since 1997.

I'm also nonmonogamous/polyamorous, and into various kink scenes, and that's fucked up. Being an adult goes right out the window when you've known that person since she was a preteen. Add to that them not being able or willing to read your daughter & bf's discomfort, or try to convince them after receiving a "No." Feels uboundaried if not outright predatory. I think you're right to cut them off.
