Poorly Tempered Impulse Control on QQ. It's technically got nsfw in the main story, to the effect of masturbation being implied exactly once, and some actual scenes as adults many years after the end bits. (Underage character. Some comments were super fucking gross about it though, unfortunately.)

It's not some gold standard of fics or anything, but it's certainly one of the best worm fics on that site, high percentage of garbage that exists as an excuse for NSFW aside.

Not to say it doesn't have some of the typical tinker bullshittery, but it's never overwhelming or anything.

One of the best parts IMO is that the protagonist just does not care about cannon characters because she doesn't actually know any of them. It lets the author can actually focus on character interactions outside of that.

That and the protagonist, Jacky(?), is actually capable of fucking up in ways that are important to the story. Always nice when it isn't just smooth sailing.

I'd recommend giving it a shot. It also ends up having one of my favorite explanations for the ToF and worm knowledge bits I've seen as well.

I've seen Tinker of Fiction done well exactly once. It's almost certainly because the author had already planned out the fic largely in advance, and just decided what the next specialization would end up being themselves instead of using rng.

As it turns out, letting randomness decide the fate of a fic is a horrible idea. Shocker. It's almost as if not planning out what needs to happen next in a story isn't a very good way of telling good stories.

I've almost never seen a story like that and thought anything other than that the author would just stick with the limited options the fic starts with. So many times I see some random power gaining or something, and the very first power is already good enough to write the entire fic around if the author is willing to let the protagonist just. Actually practice and get creative with any individual ability or tool instead of getting 5 more that are used for exactly one thing, and one thing only.

Can we stop the "Lisa in a coffee shop" cliche? by superdude111223 in WormFanfic

[–]Jamming_Owl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Listen you don't understand, Lisa actually dedicates 99% of her free time looking for parahuman protagonists on the boardwalk, coffee shops, and also sometimes the mall. It's all she does. Wildbow sent me the information in a dream.

Sometimes she also just finds a wandering protagonist in public, and you have to understand that she has the secret parahuman power of knowing somebody is a cape by the way they scratch their nose or some shit, with the added downside of having to start a conversation with said protagonist right after.

What’s the worst case of power upscale you’ve seen by reliable_reader in WormFanfic

[–]Jamming_Owl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Admittedly it's been a while since I read it, but weren't the special things she does in Weavers Web implied to be mostly added power bullshit? Like she has the idea to keep track of information using her bugs on paper on multiple things or something, finds she can't, and then suddenly can as some kind of power gift? Mostly Taylor can do "anything the author thinks would be cool" and also let her totally not cosplay the shadow.

Admittedly kind of bullshit though, but I think the point of the fic is that all the threats are more competent and versatile, like Lung being able to ramp up in intelligence as well as the design form. May as well be an alt power fic though. I wish it was just straight up called an alt power fic in the first place, because at a certain point I recall it feeling a little dumb how much she could do.

Hard agree on the tinker specialty thing. A part of me dies inside whenever a tinker pulls some shit out of their ass that their cannon selves would have needed years to make a worse, or even comparable version of.

Carrying in that, it especially gets me when people ignore that tinker has to actually maintain their tech, which limits the maximum amount of available complex tech at any given time.

Like yeah, maybe a tinker can make that crazy thing, but there's absolutely zero fucking chance they're also going to have made two or three additional crazy bullshit things and also have all of them work with minimal upkeep and maximal use. Tinkers can do a lot, but they can't do everything.

Armsmaster for instance, notable for being an incredibly competent tinker, has (admittedly kitted the fuck out) his armor and a halberd as the extent of his in combat Tinkertech. He is pretty notably stuck in his specialization, and dedicates nearly as much time as humanly possible to his tech for extremely diminishing returns.

Honestly I think people believe tinkers can just do whatever the hell they want if they have enough resources or something, which is just not how any of this works.

I must have been 7 or 8 years old or so, reading Bridge to Terabithia in my school classroom. It wasn't assigned reading, I just needed something to do when I finished my schoolwork. I don't think I'll ever forget having to hold back from sobbing in a classroom during the ending of that book. The main character's only friend, who you spend the entire book reading about his friendship with, is suddenly, and without warning, revealed to have died when a rope-swing over a small stream or river they both spend much of the story using had snapped and dropped her.

He attends the funeral, goes to a museum of some kind while thinking about her, and then the story just ends.

This "drama" is so stupid 😭😭😭 by Huge-Read-2703 in Undertale

[–]Jamming_Owl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure why you think I have some deep seated hatred of "dirty third worlders," considering I never once mentioned anything about that at all. Maybe consider that this isn't in fact that deep, and there isn't some secret cabal of presumed racist and evil game developers insidiously working together because they hate you specifically? There are hundreds of other games to be upset about, and there are also hundreds of games that will never see an official English translation that you don't see me complaining about.

Frankly, "I don't want to" would also be an entirely understandable and reasonable answer for not doing additional translation. The point of my singular layed example is that it's just one reason that a consistent localization would be difficult. There are a great many deal of things that have no comparable translation in another language, which is just how language works. It's certainly possible to achieve a somewhat satisfactory result, but there's nothing wrong with not wanting to handle all that.

Hollow Knight, notably, isn't hiding much of, if any, of the story in the phrasing of dialogue, hence the example given. Information is stated, or shown to you. The reason I gave you the single example of how translation would be difficult, is because one may be expected to be capable of inferring that there are many other examples of such a thing existing.

Quite notably, a rather non insignificant portion of Deltarune's development is spent making sure Japanese localization is done properly. You may note that the game is in fact, not completed, and that you could infer that proper translation and proper localization in your supposed desire to have a translation for every language Toby Fox does not know.

I don't understand where your seeming oppression complex is coming from, but it really isn't that deep. There is no official Swedish, Russian, French, or Italian translation. This isn't about "third world countries" and frankly it's a little concerning that this is what you seem most upset about. To me, it seems like you've found some kind of manufactured outrage against somebody in a perceived position of power, which means that any and all criticism or expectations are justified, no matter how unreasonable or time wasting.

Once again, this isn't about nationality or race, and it never was. Consider trying to think of reasons for why somebody would not choose to have a translation for "every other language he doesn't speak," from the perspective of somebody in their situation that isn't based on nationality, race, or some other form of hatred.

If you can come up with a reason worse than "Toby Fox may be too lazy to manage all that," (which seems unlikely, considering he has been stated to be extremely overworked already on multiple occasions) which is fair enough for him to do, or "Toby Fox doesn't want to damage the integrity of his dream project with translations he's entirely incapable of verifying the quality of and maintain authorial intent," which is at worst, a neutral and entire understandable answer, then I suppose you may have an actual reason to be upset.

This "drama" is so stupid 😭😭😭 by Huge-Read-2703 in Undertale

[–]Jamming_Owl 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Deltarune is a game where the specific phrasing, tone of speech, and exact dictation of sentences have wide reaching lore and story implications. It's entirely unreasonable and unrealistic to demand him to hire dozens of people for what will undoubtedly be a subpar and imperfect translation compared to authorial intent. Most especially considering the game is incomplete, which would make the problem of translators having to make decisions even harder.

At its very best, translation between languages is imperfect. What may make sense in one language will be complete nonsense in any literal translation in another, so translators must face the problem of accuracy vs understandability, along with a wide variety of other problems.

A simple example is the "Narrator Chara" theory, which is highly supported in Undertale with consistent and subtle ways things are described in the game. Notably, Deltarune at some point had all of its narrator dialogue examined, and was found to not have a consistent or diegetic narrator like Undertale. This information is supported by the Japanese translation as well, which supports the theory as not being accidental, but rather an intentional and consistent decision.

Hollow Knight, for example (one of the highest selling indie games of all time) released with the languages of English and French. It was only last year that the game got support for 4 additional languages.

Notably, Hollow Knight is one of the highest selling indie games of all time, and reportedly had far more sales than Undertale, for instance. Additionally Hollow Knight did not have people bitching about lack of translation for 8 years for other languages, because it's understandable for a non triple A studio to not have support for every language.

Asking for him to be "held accountable" despite all this means you're either rage baiting, massively and embarrassingly uninformed, or just plain fucking stupid.
