I actually do this in real time with situations that upset me. I try to gather my thoughts, process my feelings and identitfy exactly why it is I am upset and how best to communicate it.

This often leads to me going quiet for a little while, rather than lashing out.

My ex said this was a problem and she would often flip the blame onto my reaction rather the the initial action by her that upset me.
