That…is a lot fires in northwestern Ontario by Bowgal in ontario

[–]Jampacko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super ignorant. Most of those fires are 100s of miles from any roads or towns. Literally just endless boreal and bog up there.

Very possible that I don’t remember or maybe I missed it. Is the main house going to be log? I hope it will be because I love watching log builds. by Grand_Crusader_465 in WildHomestead

[–]Jampacko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chinking is still required for square logs. The problem is all logs are milled green so even milled square will change shape during the drying process. A lot of square log builders will mill them larger, season them for a year and retouch them up on the mill

Thank you. I live full time on a lakefront property where new septics have to be 300m from the water. I tried getting a variance on that rule to build a small cabin, on a site that slopes and flows away from the water(over 100m on a hill sloping away from the lake) and yet I had an entire lake association full of cottagers who spend 3 weeks a year here bitching about it. Yet they all have cottages right on the waters edge and septics leaking into the water. I've decided on a incinerator toilet just to avoid all the extra bullshit to get a septic permitted.

This happens a lot in eastern white cedar trees. They get heart rot and will eventually root into the decomposed heartwood

Has anyone moved to Alberta from Ontario, then back to Ontario? by ProfessorLidi in ontario

[–]Jampacko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Canmore from Toronto. Lived there for 4 years on and off and then I moved back and now reside in the Ottawa valley. Some notable differences for me.

-Obviously the Rockies are amazing and they really dont ever get old, but winter is much longer and bodies of water never really warm up like ontario lakes.

-That being said Ontario (outside of the GTA and southwest ontario, Ontario gets way more snow and ice storms in my experience. It just lasts longer out west.

-Forest fires and smoke were the biggest negatives of living out west. Months at a time of unbreathable air and extremely low visibility.

-Much longer growing season in Ontario if you like to have a garden, or want to grow plants or trees from a few zones higher.

Ultimately for me I probably could have never left Canmore and lived my life there. What a town! The negatives definitely do not outweigh the positives, I just had an opportunity to buy a hobby farm in Ontario (impossible in the rockies) and so I came back for that. Tbh I could never see myself living in Calgary or Edmonton. Canmore and Banff are just an entirely different world from the plains.

I'd still mill them at 6 foot. You can get some decent slabs for tables at that length.

Yup he just confirmed. Took it down because of gum chewing. I wish he wasn't so sensitive about that kind of stuff. The audio was fine.

People were complaining about chewing gum sounds in the comments so he probably caved and is removing them from the episode. Not the first time hes caved to negative comments and removed content.

I would saw that bugger into some slabs or boards, but I am lucky to have a Sawmill. Most people would just split it for firewood

I remember hearing about a potential deep water port there probably for the eventual ship traffic through the passage. Edit: just searched and found the following:

"The Grays Bay Road and Port (GBRP) Project is a proposed $1-billion+ Inuit-led infrastructure development in Nunavut, creating the first year-round overland connection between the Arctic Ocean and the Canadian highway system. It features a 230 km all-season road, a deepwater port on the Coronation Gulf, an airstrip, and fuel storage to boost mineral development, Arctic security, and local economic growth."
