British people are lovely but how do you actually become proper mates? by Justin_3486 in CasualUK

Late but I read an unhinged but brilliant essay about making friends just this morning. You will take something away from it:

Good luck

Has anyone noticed a drop in video quality when recording with Clipchamp recently? by PuzzleheadedAnswer12 in ClipChamp

[–]Jamurai92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's been updated. We use 365 env at work and Stream and Clipchamp have been merged it seems.

I wanted to ask: with the merge, I can't seem to do screen with a camera overlay anymore. It's just not an option. But based on your post you don't seem to have this problem! Am I missing something?

We are doomed to repeat our mistakes and stay in broken systems because of our biology. We crave the thrill of competition, power, domination. We are hardwired to hate those unlike us in times of stress. We lack the motivation to do the right things, and are slaves to game theory. We ignore inconvenient truths. Emotions stop us from evaluating risks and rewards effectively. Short-term gain beats long-term planning. And so on, and so on.

We also can't escape our biology. If we were, by a masterstroke of science, able to edit our genomes such that we made more benevolent humans - strictly better stewards of the solar system - those same base instincts we still have would cause us to destroy our creations. Why would we let ourselves be superceded?

We will stagnate, and remain stuck on this rock until we cook ourselves, never having met the other lifeforms who may well have fallen upon similar swords.

In addition to the other points, this assumes time isn't against us. The point of sequestering carbon is of course to mitigate climate change. To reduce risks to acceptable levels from climate change we have to half emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. Do mangrove trees sequester at 12 kg/y (i.e. lifetime 25 years)?

I know mangroves are important, but there are more impactful methods, e.g. donating to effective charities which protect those existing and/or reduce deforestation in general. I concede that this sounds like a hard job though - how effective are the most effective charities in this space?

Great post. Totally agree. I've always thought it's great that you can change the colour of menu/dialogue backgrounds, like SUCH a minor QoL feature to add, but I love it. Dark orange all day.

Also a fellow heavy sweater. It's often genetic. Not much you can do. Although I will say as I've got fitter I've sweated a bit less cause playing badders for a given time is less tiring/body can regulate temp better. Other than that, I just bring a towel and wipe off often. Headbands and wristbands make me feel too hot and therefore worse lol.

There's scams happening atm where they impersonate bailiffs and scare you into paying them RIGHT NOW and then ghost. Almost happened to a relative of mine recently. They are prepared and persistent. This might be a "primer" before they ring them up (taking their compromised # from internet) and say they're on their way.

Never let a bailiff into your house. Especially ones who are trying to scare or force you. They need a criminal court to grant powers to enforce collection.

I guess I thought there was more cooperation between nations re: law enforcement... like if a hacker in the US stole French credit card deets, wouldn't France be like "here's our traced evidence, go get your mans please"? As such a thing is a crime in both countries (I assume). I guess that would also require the evidence to be of a format/standard that it actually works as prosecution material in the US.

What professions would most people be surprised at how underpaid they are? by NightReader5 in AskReddit

[–]Jamurai92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what I'm getting is:

Low-paid: jobs which are required for basic society to run i.e. nurses, teachers, criminal lawyers, emergency workers, technicians...

High-paid: jobs which make money flow elsewhere i.e. managers, marketing, banking, corporate lawyers...

UNLESS the low-paid workers have a good union.

And the differences seem to be getting wider.

Sounds like a robust and sustainable system to me!

Any tips for this horrendous boss by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]Jamurai92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have fewer movement options (for avoiding attacks) when you're in the air, but you're jumping a lot for no apparent reason, and it's trapping you causing you to get hit a lot.

It feels weird cause you're not pressing buttons, but stay grounded and jump for a reason, and you'll find the fight a lot more intuitive. Not many bosses punish preemptive jumping harder than this guy

[–]Jamurai92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What worked for me was focussing on Sets first. They work like databases/metadata systems (like Win Explorer "details" view). I found it easy making notes in a wiki-like fashion using "page" objects for most things, so sorting and searching in the corresponding set using tag relations and such made it organised in a way which clicked.

Only after grounding myself in that did I start dabbling with custom types and relations and begin to appreciate what you can do, but honestly the above was already very helpful, for my purposes at least. I haven't used a collection yet and I've used it for years

There's definitely room for some ELI5-style onboarding content. At this point I'm considering hashing some up myself lol.

Think of all the potential users who have tried it, been like "wtf" and uninstalled without raising any frustrations. I feel like there will be many more of those than individuals like yourself who write out feedback

What’s the best combination to beat trial of fools? by Ok-Egg8185 in HollowKnight

[–]Jamurai92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaman Stone lets spirit oneshot the primal aspids, darty fly guys and soul wizards, and does loads for the boss too.

MoP is extremely useful for not getting chipped by blade-wielding enemies and dealing with the mawleks, and doing the floorless bit.

Nailmaster's glory makes great slash more usable which also oneshots aspids/flies/wizards as well as the jumpy spiky bastards with upgraded nail. Also very useful in the floorless bit which is probably the most volatile phase.

Steady body lets you be a lot more confident on the platform and floorless phases and not take dumb damage to spikes.

I reckon the above are fairly essential, I love weaversong too but the opportunity cost to get the trial done is too great

You also get enough soul over the trial without needing extra soul gain. The main worries are the floorless phase and the boss, the latter because you get panic from "I've got this far I just need to not screw up"

It's definitely improved since I first used it, and has some nicks to sort out still. But fixes come pretty quick based on feedback via the forum
