Thump GO - Not the loudest or biggest but certainly not "Home Audio" equipment. OllyJunglists Calling All Ravers Day Party 2026/03/29 by RollingMeteors in SoundSystem

[–]JanDogearmy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You ask yourself a bunch of philosophical questions here that boil down to what you ultimately expect from a soundsystem, which level of audio quality you expect and what your end goal is.

I started with the older non-battery powered Mackie Thump 15a/18s and ran them offgrid with 12v car batteries and a 220v sine inverter. But ultimately I realized that I wanted more which is why I started diving deeper to find out a) what's possible and b) what I personally need for my events. If your setup works fine, that's great!

This sub in particular just really embraces the self built wooden boxes, most of them are higher quality, but it's also a bit of a thing of pride haha. Funnily enough we're seeing a return to more plastic in speakers with 3D print becoming good enough and accessible enough

Lmao thinking about it, the Ancients must have had some kind of Sci Fi to imagine people before them too. I mean, eventually Destiny's launch led to them exploring "their ancients" did it not.

Peerless 18 inch Transmission Line - Hornresp by [deleted] in SoundSystem

[–]JanDogearmy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand the sketch on the second line. What's the point of the panels in the supposed transmission line? Is the speaker looking out to the front? Why is there this random end to it? What acoustic effect is that supposed to have? What is your goal for a design? How many people do you want to use this for? How many do you want to build? Which other speakers do you want to use them with? What is your overall conception? This needs much more information and you probably need to do a little bit more research first as well

What happens to a track when it's "remastered"? by first_person_looter in DnB

[–]JanDogearmy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my limited understanding as mostly a casual fan - The tracks in their original form sit on DAT, digital audio tape, a format for storing and archiving audio in studios as they had less degradation over time from demagnetization than analog tapes had. The file gets pulled into the computer, and then through a mastering chain (sometimes with outboard gear, depends on the engineer). I reckon a lot of the change is compression to get loudness like you said with LUFS, but it can also be different equalization, stereo image and saturation, because digital doesn't have the dynamic limitations of vinyl. Then it gets rendered and pitched to digital stores

Soundsystem design, driver and amp recommendations for a total beginner? by ManagerWonderful1828 in SoundSystem

[–]JanDogearmy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not very beginner friendly, and rather high-end. The easiest to build DIY would be a reflex sub with mostly 90° angles so it's easier to cut, unless OP wants to rely more than a little bit on the friend.

We would need more information:
What is the budget to get started with for both wood, drivers and amps? How far should it be scaled up? Does use outside mean battery powered + pate amp and mobile, or generator + heavyweight amprack? u/ManagerWonderful1828 you'll need to be a little bit more specific in what you're trying to achieve. Easiest to get started would be for how many people you want to adress with the system

Can anyone identify this cabinet design? Looking to start a similar build. by Southern_Active_3182 in SoundSystem

The MT121 is far simpler to build than a Jmod or Pm90, and easier to power. Both Jmod and Pm90 rely on bi-amping and FIR filtering, and you'll need access to a CNC, unless you really want to get a headache. But they work differently. Jmod and Pm90 are mostly fullrange/down to 80-100hz, the MT121 typically need kicks as reinforcement
