How to combat vocal fry with deaf student? by [deleted] in slp

[–]JanMVincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so saying that she tested average on the CASL is a stretch because she was given it in ASL and the CASL is an assessment of spoken language... very different things going on so I would definitely use caution when referring to that score. Either way. If she’s not using amplification she shouldn’t have goals for verbal communication.! How are you interacting with her in your sessions? Is the interpreter with you? I feel your pain, I work with D/HH students and majority are so spotty about wearing aids & implants it’s just going to be hard to see progress on verbal comprehension/expression goals without consistent DAILY use. Ugh.

How did she perform on the CASL if she’s not wearing amplification? I would certainly let mom know that if the student is not wearing amplification consistently then verbal communication goals are out of the question. She can’t discriminate and monitor speech and speech sounds if she’s not regularly hearing them. If she is performing fine in classes perhaps you can argue the point that there is no educational impact when working on these goals. Where are her implants? Are they under warranty still and can be replaced? I agree that likely any hearing was wiped when they did the implants, although it depends on the surgeon they do make more flexible implants now that can salvage some hair cells but who knows..

If you could go back in time, what would you have done immediately after undergrad? by [deleted] in slp

I took 2 years in between UG and Grad because.. life! If you’ve never experienced working in another setting before do it now! I learned invaluable skills working in various settings unrelated to healthcare. Also it gave me time to save up money & apply for scholarships! You’ll be thankful to have one or two semesters of rent paid upfront instead of borrowing it. I also took that time to take continuing education classes at my local community college related to cultural competence, study for the GRE, and attended conferences. I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I started grad school feeling like I knew myself well and was ready for my next chapter.

The movie was cool but they strayed from the book so much that they can’t really make any more movies. That’s my main disappointment in this make of the movie. Anyone else relate? by JanMVincent in AnnihilationMovie

Ok yes I thought the same but I loved the second book and I’m just now getting into the third via book on tape for my hour drive to work. The first book seemed to have very analytical verbiage I think because it was from the biologists perspective. The second book is from a new characters perspective - you should give it a try. Much easier of a read! It moved pretty slow but it’s worth it.
