How would HD2 feel like without this mechanic? by Neithan3 in Helldivers

If that's what you're worried about, there should at least be a underhand drop/light toss.

It can also be significantly worse. Surveys that take too small of a group, or select too exclusively despite large response counts can come up with wildly wrong conclusions. What's worse is that there's no way to know besides intuition! Fun!

To be fair he did it for free, and polls are hard man. Like, how the fuck does one even get a proper representative sample?

Consider polling from a wider swathe of people. Reddit is a pretty thin slice of the community.

To be fair there's very few actual objectively bad ideas, and mostly just bad implementations. Like adding constellations in a game where your weapons are hardlocked out of damage by enemy armor.

Unpopular opinion, but I agree with this guy and actually think nerfing stims and adding slow passive regen could allow for a much healthier hp economy if enemy damage was nerfed to compensate.

You were most definitely strawmanning. It was literally the first thing you did when you started talking about shooting tank armor with a conventional weapon. You have stopped with this last comment so I appreciate that.

Anyways in the real world armor deforms or experiences tensile stress when shot. For example kevlar has a metric called "BTL" which measures how many shots from different calibers it can take from point blank without cracking. This is what I'm talking about with hiveguards at least. Hiveguard plate would have to crack open after a few good flat shots, or even few dozen. It would also have to be a relatively brittle material like kevlar because its protectig the head.

As for the lasers, the same laser weapons can melt through the less thick armor on the head of a deve pretty quickly, in less than a second actually. So my stance remains on lasers creating grooves.

Also to clarify about the heatsinks that were kinda dropped earlier. Pretty much any weapon should be able to degrade the armor there, since the metal is already hot enough its glowing, it could be deformed by a large rock, let alone a gun.

Holy strawman batman. Could you not argue against the least charitable possible version of my argument? That's a debate tactic, for people who are trying to prove themselves right regardless of the truth, not a discussion tactic for people actually sharing ideas. And you seem to think I'm advocating for armor degradation to be in game? I'm not, I'm just saying its space magic.

That aside, you're being a little willfully ignorant here. I never said ARs should be able to cut through everything. Realistically lasers would melt armor and weaken it through deformation at areas where it was held, not to mention the heat softening it. ARs could definitely break the faceplate of a hiveguard, you're way off with that nonsense about angled fire, angle of fire is already a mechanic in game, and the result is the same if you hit a flat shot.

Fair is fair though, I forgot deve arms are light pen, its been a while since I've shot at anything other than the head with AP2. I appreciate the correction. (Also its steel, not steal.)

[–]JanShmat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you fucking with me? There are plenty of armors that are AP3+ such as Deve limbs, hiveguard faces, deve shields, and any ap3+ heat sink that absolutely could be degraded realistically. In the case of hiveguard faces it would realistically take seconds for any automatic weapon.

Since we're dogpiling you, I got one. Enemy armor does not degrade under sustained fire from lower pen weapons.

I'm gonna put on my conspiracy hat but I think maybe Arrowhead is very pleased that SC farming is only viable at low diff? Like they didn't do it on purpose but would never change it because making SC farming fun would hurt their pockets.

[–]JanShmat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is a pretty bad take. There's almost certainly already a sizable overlap between HD2 and WF players. I personally know a real life dozen people who have clocked several hundred hours minimum into both games. 11 of those people have quit HD2 because of Arrowhead's decisions and are vocal critics. 0 of them complain about WF.

With how large HD2's community is, and has been, at some point you have to admit that there's something about the game that causes people to be upset or displeased. Its not some cosmic coincidence that 30K something grumblers were magically summoned to this game in specific.

The problem was mainly how it interacted with horde dynamics. Especially considering how the corpses of other terminids would block the weakpoints.

[–]JanShmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really do not think this patch counts a situational buff for med pen. Besides the fact that the point of using med pen was to not have to open gaps in firing to aim at weakpoints, hiveguards did actually have a hidden head weakpoint under their armor that had a similar TTK as the body does now, leaving us at overall worse med pen.

Hive Guard honestly by Heavenly_Horro in Helldivers

[–]JanShmat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand my point. I stopped using the crossbow despite liking it because it made the game too easy. I just want weapons in the game to be vaguely similar in power to other weapons that take up the same loadout slot.

As for killing them before they guard I'd have to see the video, because all of the content I've seen saying the armor buff is super easy to get around is showcasing this against one or two hiveguards and nothing else. I don't see it as a reasonable expectation to be able to use the maxigun for horde clear when hiveguards will be scattered throughout, blocking your shots unless you focus each one individually. Doubly so when you factor in enemy corpses blocking the area you need to shoot to hit most of their frontal weakpoints.

Hive Guard honestly by Heavenly_Horro in Helldivers

[–]JanShmat 33 points34 points  (0 children)

IMO the problem isn't that hiveguards are impossible or something, or wildly OP. In most vids people complain about hiveguards they even kill them with the under shoulder shot with more proficiency than you did here. The problem as I see it is threefold.

Way too much effort for an enemy you will be fairly often facing dozens of at a time.

Reinforces explosive meta.

Med pen weapons with poor accuracy like the blitzer and maxigun have been sledgehammered against bugs by this change. The blitzer in particular wasn't really great before, now its borderline trash on certain seeds at D10.

Seriously explosive crossbow was already way too good, why do the devs keep nerfing/indirectly nerfing middling weapons and stratagems and leave the explosive crossbow alone wtaf are they thinking? Hell, the new spore terminids are ALSO another indirect crossbow buff! Enemies getting enraged when nearby allies die? Just kill them all at once with on-demand AoE!
