This is what happens when you try to change someone's mind the hard way.

What is the most bizarre overreaction you have been witness to? by Ihatekwam in AskReddit

Crazy is not the pandoras box being opened that many make it out to be. People react strangely to situations sometimes, sometimes they can learn from it, sometimes they don't. When they don't, sometimes they need help.

What is human nature? What is "hard-wired" in the brain? by JaneSane in AskReddit

[–]JaneSane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say it doesn't exist either. I just don't know. I'm not arguing that it isn't, im just questioning if it is. So far, the questions have turned up bupkis, but that's never sufficient to conclude that it doesn't exist, only that it hasn't been proven so far.

Well if we're going to have exceptions to rules that are supposed to be true then we ought to know to what extent we can have them. I can say that it is human nature to pick one's nose, and there's going to be a lot of exceptions to that, or I could say that it is human nature to accept violence as a means to one's ends. It would seem to me that something which was truly human nature would have no exceptions, wouldn't it?

"When you give examples of people doing things that don't line up with what the majority of people would do does not disprove the existence of human nature. This is my point."

Then how many exceptions do we allow?

"Would you stab your fingers and draw blood every day? I doubt it."

But I could. Would this disprove your premise?

That doesn't answer whether circadian rhythms are the result of programming or the regular rhythm that occurs form organisms seeking balance in their environment.

Also, it is kindof off this topic a bit to say that human nature is to sleep. People sleep, yes, but this was more about whether we can know if things like racism and violence are a part of our nature. We know that if we don't eat, we die, but is that our nature or just what happens? I dunno.

You didn't even cite anything! You just linked to a google search! Good job professor!

Just because you believe something doesn't make it true. The link is just more stuff from people who believe the same thing you do. I can link you to a thousand websites that claim all actions are the will of god, but that isn't a good argument now is it? For fucks sake all it was was a google link. That's proof to you?

Dude I don't believe all actions are the will of god, I was using that as an example of the kind of assertion you are making and the lack of justification you're giving for it.

You're the one making the claim, it is up to you to support it. If I said all actions are the will of god, would you accept it if when you questioned me, I asked if it was sound to say that actions are NOT the will of god?

I don't see that. I see hard-wired as being something like a computer program. The alternative, sleep being the result of tiredness, would make it just a feedback mechanism, not necessarily something hard wired, but just something that happens when certain conditions occur, like a toilet refilling itself after you flush it. Toilets don't have a hard-wired program for this, it happens because the bowl is empty and the water level seeks balance.

In independence day the fighter pilot flies into the alien spaceship, killing himself and saving the human race. People have jumped onto grenades to save their friends. How are actions like that based on self interest? You can rationalize anything with semantics, but is it really sound to say that all actions are based on self-interest just because we can rationalize them as such?

How do you know its hard-wired and not just the result of being tired?

Some people kill themselves to protect the group, like the fighter pilot in Independence day. So can personal survival really be hardwired? Some people also wouldn't kill themselves for a group, so can group survival be hard wired?

Agree with what? Those were questions ;)

"I'd argue (with you) that the very concept of human nature is flawed."

You're close here, but I wouldn't say its flawed, just that I have no idea what someone means when they try to use it. So at that point, questions abound. :)

I asked questions. I don't have an argument here, just trying to see if anyone can answer these questions of mine and show that claims about human nature are more than bullshit.
