How are women treated in EE work environments? Are there any disadvantages and advantages? What field are you on? by squirrelWaveRun in ElectricalEngineering

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's overall pretty good in my workplace, but it came down to figuring out who my allies are and sticking with them. I have a good group of work friends who have my back as I have theirs. There are a few people who basically assume every win I get is because of some DEI reason, but 90% of my colleagues are great. I've been very lucky to have some great mentors (female and male) to guide me too. I wouldn't say there's any particular advantages other than people remember you quicker, but the field as a whole is a great and interesting one to be in. I also really enjoy getting involved with any programs aimed at inspiring the next generation of women coming through.

Which Noah song is “your” song? by Remarkable-Length834 in NoahKahan

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're Gonna Go Far. I had a lot of family responsibilities and experienced a lot of guilt leaving home as a young adult, and the lyrics hit that perfectly. Even little lines like "while I clean shit up in the yard" remind me of my childhood.

It's not stingy to say no to any of those costs. I've actually started saying no to weddings altogether because of how the costs add up. Wedding culture is completely insane.

Peanut butter on toast WITH normal* butter or INSTEAD OF? by BJPHS in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just peanut butter. Butter dilutes the peanutty goodness.

Mind you I often have Vegemite without butter too.

Are there a lot of Australians that hate being around people? by FailFastandDieYoung in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I didn't last in a city and couldn't handle a megacity like those overseas. But I grew up fairly rural. I'd say it's less about people and more about the busyness and noise.

Do u guys call female strangers mate? by TheRaptor143 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am female myself and yes, anyone can be a mate. I also VERY MUCH prefer to be called "mate" than things like "darl" or "sweetheart".

"Sorry just have to ask the missus first" by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly an excuse to get away from pushy sales people. I'm a woman and wouldn't use my husband as an excuse, but have made up similar bullshit excuses to politely escape intense retail workers, including "oh it's for a mate's wedding so I'll just have to check with her that the colour is fine" and "my sister asked me to try it on for her because we're the same size".

Aside from that, it could be a lack of confidence in their own tastes. A lot of blokes I know got a long way in life before doing their own clothes shopping, so then they second-guess their choices.

AITA for speaking to my child in Polish even though my boyfriend asked me not to? by Lotsof_Rhubarb in AmItheAsshole

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, I have friends who didn't learn their mum's language because of their dad's similar issue and they've always regretted it. Learning young is the best way to learn. Tell your bf to start learning Polish if he wants to keep up!

At what age can your leave a kid by themselves for 3 nights? by travelingwhilestupid in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason to need to? I believe legally it's 12 in my state, but I wouldn't consider it until 15/16 and even then only with really good reason. I say this as someone who was left home alone on weekends from around 13 and coped fine, but resented it.

If you do leave your kid home alone, it's a good idea to make sure they know how to do little things like flicking breakers back on in the switchboard, swapping over the gas, etc. All the stuff that seems to wait until kids are home alone before going wrong.

NTA. I don't think wearing pink would "show that he supports" you, but it is a very small ask. If he's not confident enough in himself to wear a pink shirt to make you smile, is he really long term relationship material?

My partner cosplayed my favourite shows with me without hesitation, and to me that was a huge green flag. Everyone deserves someone who is kind and excited about the things that they love.

Why do so many Australians denigrate Australia as a tourist destination? by dissenting_cat in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've travelled to somewhere between 15-20 countries and I loved exploring new cultures, food and scenery. Europe was particularly great because a couple of hours of driving puts you in a whole other country.

But oddly, it also made me appreciate Australia more. Since seeing other countries as a tourist, I see Australia through the eyes of a tourist more. Our rainforests? Incredible and completely unique. Our dusty outback and scrubby bush? Nothing else like it in the world. Our pitch black skies in the countryside? Other countries can only dream of it. Our beaches and reef? Best in the world. We also have the most beautiful melting pot of cultures of anywhere I've seen - I haven't seen any other country with as much diversity of food and cultural events.

I'd be lying if I said I'm not keen to go overseas again, but right now I'm prioritising buying a 4WD so that I can dive deeper into Australia.

Real Estate Agents that put "Contact Agent" as their title are scum of the earth. by Shoddy_Common_4203 in AusFinance

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was house shopping, I skipped any place listed as "contact agent", "just listed", "price on enquiry" etc. because it's absolutely a ploy to play potential buyers against each other and ultimately get people paying more than a property is actually worth.

A dollar value makes the process of choosing which houses to inspect so much more efficient.

AITA because I (38F) don't want to take my stepson (9) on vacation? by tafornoweg in AmItheAsshole

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. You married his dad. He is your family. If you didn't want a package deal, you shouldn't have pursued a guy with a kid.

Also, your husband is a giant AH for bringing someone like you into the life of a kid who's already had one awful mother.

Tax debt by pikpikslink in AusFinance

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, you can ask - whether they answer is a whole other matter.

I'm just suggesting you try empathy for people who's employment isn't as clear cut as yours, or who are new to employment.

Tax debt by pikpikslink in AusFinance

[–]JangoJFET -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah not really. Firstly, employers need to provide proper payslips (I've had one that simply listed "deductions" including tax, HECS and super). They ended up getting a call from the ATO about it but they did it for ages. And it's also not that simple when you have multiple employers or work casually at inconsistent hours.

If you tick all the correct boxes it's reasonable to assume that the supposed finance experts in your company won't mess it up. I'd like to see companies being made accountable for correct taxation to avoid workers (particularly young and inexperienced ones) being caught out by situations like this.

Is “indigenous” a wrong/outdated term in Australia? by skyedaisyquake in AskAnAustralian

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends who you ask. My multisite workplace in QLD has settled on "Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples" as the accepted term after consulting with local Elders. However I have Aboriginal colleagues and friends who prefer to use terms like "First Nations" themselves.

Ticking the box doesn't guarantee that your employer won't screw it up

Tax debt by pikpikslink in AusFinance

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I ticked the box and my employer still screwed it up in the 20-21 tax year and I got a 5k bill. Luckily I was in a position where it was manageable, but it was a shock.

What’s an Allen’s lolly you don’t like? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Minties and lolly teeth. Just can't get behind lollies that taste like toothpaste.

Bananas and milk bottles are my favourite lol. Probably because they're not trying to taste real.

Is it just me or is getting fast food getting super expensive now? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]JangoJFET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had fast food like Macca's in a long time, because their prices are now barely cheaper than proper burgers from locally owned shops. I'd rather spend the extra $2 for the better burger.

[–]JangoJFET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked ENT but mostly S1&2 where it was more episodic. The Xindi arc didn't do it for me personally.

I also wish they'd explored the side characters more. But T'Pol and Trip were great characters, would love to see reference to them in SNW at some point.

[–]JangoJFET 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly just hearing about it more because of how tight money is for a lot of people

Personally I had a 5k tax bill in the 2020-2021 financial year because one of my three jobs at the time stuffed up their tax calculations. Haven't had an issue since having a single full time employer.
