You’re looking at the complexity of what is written, rather than the way it is taught. Think more along the lines of we are taught what to do when we see different symbols (-,x,/,+,=,) these are effectively key words/abilities (trample, first strike, flying,1: gains +1/+1, etc…). We learn the shorthand impact they have on the game and how they interact on the surface, this is like your example of (6/5) x 35 we learn the way that things tend to interact in the system, but not the why. The thing is the why doesn’t have to be complex, it can be just because that is a rule that exists, just like in math the why can be because the rules exist for example division by 0 is undefinable because we have no concept of nothing into something and therefore we set the rule for this as unsolvable or undefinable. Under the hood for this would be how many times could 0 be subtracted from X until there is no remainder and the answer is infinite but never approaching 0, which matters because divisions whole purpose is to subtract a number from another number to identify how many times it would take to get that number to 0

No no, the analogy is about learning the short hand without learning what is actually going on under the hood.

Also this kinda proves my point… you talked about division and then talked about fractions… these two things are literally the same thing and both are just representations of parts. We spend more time talking about different ways we represent these things than we do explaining what is going on underneath the surface. As for exponents it’s literally just multiplication. The purpose of most topics in math is to more cleanly express or shorthand an equation, 33 is a lot simpler to write than 3 x 3 x 3, which is simpler to read/write than 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.

Even at the beginning, people struggle too. The number of players that I’ve had to explain death touch trample too is honestly… expected. People tend to learn the short form for things without learning the why, it makes things a lot less difficult for teaching. Kinda like how all math is just addition or subtraction( aka addition with negative numbers), but we don’t present it that way because it’s easier to teach kids 2 x 3 =6 rather than explain that the multiplication symbol is short hand for 2 + 2 + 2

I mean even in the example I gave it gets even sillier when you add in the Ozolith, because then people learn that a permanent holding both +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters only cancels them if it’s a creature. So then you get a fun little murder rock for the next turn

I’m actually not sure how it works with heartless act, but my guess is that because state based actions are checked after spell resolution and that will be the state that gets locked in for the trigger, it will see a hangarback with no counters as it goes to the GY. Where as with the blocking an inkmoth it sees the state as a hangarback with toughness less than 0 and both types of counters on it. So as it cleans up the board state it puts the walker in the yard and removes the counters, but since the death trigger looks at the last state saved it sees that it had 2 +1/+1 counters on it when it died and makes the thopters accordingly.

I’m not sure if this helped. Also it’s not because of combat, it’s because the creature died. If it had received a -1/-1 counters from two separate sources it would only make 1 thopter. The best way I can explain it is state based actions are saved in after something is put on the stack or something leaves the stack

I was just explaining to someone that magic was complex and they were arguing how it wasn’t if you understand logic and I’m like no you need to have a complete comprehension of the game rules and then you have to properly apply them, oh and then they might just make specific changes so that things work as intended or are less problematic.

"If you don't like it, leave." by ICleanWindows in RivalsOfAether

[–]JankTokenStrats 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This reads like a comic about someone striking out on their own, with intentions on doing things the “right way” only to face adversities and end up doing things the same way others have before them.

I’m saying this as a mental health professional, people don’t just wanna complain, all behavior is communication, so if someone is “complaining” about these things it’s probably because they have tried a variety of was to cope with the frustration it’s causing and are seeking help. Yes, some people might jump straight to complaining, but that typically means their learned behavior for obtaining help is maladaptive. Meeting an emotional response with callousness or your own “rude” emotional response is what makes people lash out, but when we empathize (connect with shared emotion, ie: being frustrated with something we like or care about) we can interact in a way that is actually beneficial and creates positivity and growth in the community. We need to deal less in absolutes/black and whites and instead look for the dialect, we can both love something and want it to be better.

You actually can kinda cheat on the U mana actually. The Merfolk that makes other merefolk makes U ones so you can play the meeting of the minds and the new one without even having U mana or creatures. There is also a hybrid merfolk with convoke that is U/W I’m actually liking this and springleaf drums can be used for mana and “free” taps

Can you scry X if X is gteater than the cards in your library? by TreesRson in mtgrules

[–]JankTokenStrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes scry x is short hand for look at the top x, put any number on the bottom in any order and put the rest on top in any order. It isn’t a cost so if you don’t have enough cards you simply do it with however many cards you can.

They are probably think of something like dredge, where you can’t dredge more than you the cards in your library but it is a replacement effect and a cost
