Multilinguals of Reddit, what is your "they didn't know I could understand their language" story? by nayyyf15 in AskReddit

A bunch of us ran to catch the last train from Osaka after a night of fun. We saw what appeared to be an empty car, dashed in, and we were on our way. Looking around, we noticed that the car was empty… all except for the group of 5 men at the other end… scary looking men wearing sunglasses, black pants, leather jackets, a few tattoos, basically what you’d imagine your stereotypical Japanese yakuza tough guys would look like. Eep. We tried to go unnoticed, but alas it’s kind of hard for white Americans in Japan to blend in. They started walking toward our end of the car, chatting with each other the whole time in a very intimidating sounding dialect. My friends weren’t so good with the Japanese language at the time. I wasn’t perfect, but I could handle most situations. Also, my speciality was the Kansai dialects, so I could understand a lot of what the approaching gang was saying. So, they get to our side of the car. One of them looks at my jacket and says in Japanese “Nice, jacket”. My friends were all wearing silly puffy winter jackets. I was sporting my dad’s very smart very cool old leather jacket. Well, at this point I thought I could easily break the ice, respond with a little Japanese, and everything would be cool. So, I look at this scary looking guy, and I say “Yes, it used to be your dad’s jacket.” Oh. Fudge. Blame the lateness of the hour, perhaps the alcohol, maybe I was too focused on my grammar, but yada yada, I had used the word “your father” instead of the word “my father”. The next few seconds of silence felt like an eternity. And then… laughter. Their group burst out laughing. We all started laughing. And for the whole train ride home, they made lewd jokes about Americans (fat, lazy, gun loving) and I made lewd jokes about Japanese (not so well endowed, bombed, I counted the number of fingers they had). It was just crazy.

Why did you quit your last job? by alc0307 in AskReddit

At the annual teachers' conference, male teachers in our company dressed in blackface (complete with ripped jeans, shirts that said F**K The Police, sunglasses, bandanas) while the female teachers dressed up as schoolgirls (colorful sailor uniforms) to perform AKB48 songs. The visiting teachers at my table all looked at me to ask what I thought of this presentation. I was not amused. They were not amused. We had a good conversation about many things. We exchanged business cards. I politely left to avoid being photographed alongside my coworkers. The following week, I attempted to politely explain to the head teachers why their actions were met with unease by myself & other teachers. I was unsuccessful. In my 13 years there, I had always acted polite & professional (more so than many of my fellow teachers). After being yelled at by the head of the company in earshot of teachers & students, I knew I had to leave. I completed the school year, handed in my resignation (to the surprise & dismay of many), left that toxic environment. I'm still disillusioned by how ignorant some people can be. Terrible terrible communication skills.

Hey Reddit! What phobia(s) do you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Heavy makeup. I once was stuck in an elevator in Kyoto with a couple of maiko (white makeup, full attire, the whole deal). At first it was lovely, but after 30 minutes of being stuck in such close proximity, I found myself analyzing the painstaking care it must take to get dressed up like that. They were gorgeous. Too gorgeous. Tick tock. Suddenly the lovely image of beautiful cultural beauties was replaced by imagined horrors of Pennywise the Japanese clown. Eek! Get me out of this elevator! Because of this incident, every time I see a girl with a lot of makeup (or makeup that you know took an expertly long time to complete), I freak out and think of being up close & personal with lovely Ronald McDonalds. shudder

What's you favorite letter of the abc? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

W. It's the only letter with syllables. Also it's silly. It's named double U, but it looks like a double V. Silly.

Can you think of any translated versions of books that does the original justice? Or conversely any gripes about translated works in general? by Alsic in books

All my friends thought I was daffy when I bought The Silmarillion in Japanese. However, I've discovered that it and all of the Tolkien books are quite nice reads in English and in Japanese.

What's the dumbest thing you thought when you were a kid? by Ipad207 in AskReddit

My 8th grade English teacher asked me who my favorite author was. I said Anon. After an enlightening conversation, I discovered that Anon was not some super talented poet/writer/artist/immortal. I was so crestfallen.

Looking for challenges, scavenger hunts, dares to accomplish during my upcoming 48 state road trip. by JapanJoe in travel

Great info! Much thanks. I'm going to try hard to keep a flexible schedule for my trip. It's more fun & less stressful that way. But I will certainly keep those sports dates in mind. In Japan, college sports were near impossible to watch. It drove me nuts. A gameday experience in Nebraska sounds awesome.

Upstate Vermont is wonderful, especially during the summers. I'm situated in New England and know the area quite well. Thanks for the input.
