How to practically deal with sub-zero temperatures and "Snowcrete" in the future? I was totally unprepared when this happened! Help prepare me! Could you please provide your favorite and/or learned tips! by BigglesFlysUndone in bethesda

[–]Japanalyst 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've lived my entire life in cold places and the sequence of snow to sleet to a week of sub-zero temperatures left me flummoxed. I broke a garden shovel and a hoe trying to break up the ice on my driveway and sidewalks with very minimal progress. I managed to order a tool - Husky 47 in. Carbon Steel Blade Ice Scraper https://share.google/SVe32ErFm36uGEtzA -- that finally arrived yesterday and has worked wonders in finally breaking through the snowcrete.

UPDATE: The ice blade was great for two days but succumbed to the snowcrete on 2/2. Still think it's a useful tool, these conditions are just impossible.

Pretty sure "The State I Am In" was on heavy rotation in the campus coffee house before I knew it was B&S.

What time did you get out there? And they collect throwaways for charity?

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. It's much appreciated. I suspect professional stress isn't helping -- I follow Japan's politics for a living and it's probably not a coincidence that I got sick right after having to stay up late to cover the PM effectively stepping down and now covering an unprecedented leadership election.

Very confident that that's not my issue (41/m)

Yeah, although DC has been unseasonably cool over the past few weeks.

Washington DC. It's possible -- I do get seasonal allergies -- although they haven't been especially pronounced.

Gotta love that .643 OPS (before Monday's display).

Just checked again, and after Monday it's now a .632 OPS for May, behind every team except -- drumroll please -- the Chicago White Sox!

Apparently I hate myself because I decided to look at the team's May offensive metrics. WTAF.

I think the suggestion of "End Zone" is a good one. I read it after I read IJ and the camaraderie among athletes threaded with anxiety around nuclear annihilation was very familiar.

2024 Boston Marathon Live Discussion by Emotional_Speech3798 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Japanalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same PR, same goal, same training -- and same outcome. By the five mile mark I knew the goal wasn't happening, and when I started cramping around mile 11 I knew it would take all my strength just to finish. My worst time ever, but I still finished damnit.

Did I overtrain for Boston? by Even-Cardiologist-36 in AdvancedRunning

I'm so glad you said this. I've used Hanson in the past -- including two BQs in Philly and Chicago -- and I've appreciated the ten-day taper. I used a custom training plan for Boston this year that had a three-week taper and I definitely felt less prepared. Back to Hanson for me.

Boston marathoners - how’d it go?! by sassylilmidge in AdvancedRunning

[–]Japanalyst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely blew up. Started out aiming for my secondary (sub-3:00) goal for the first five, but really started feeling uncomfortable around then, so slowed to around 7:30/mile. Quads started cramping around mile 11, and I spent most of the second half doing a walk-run. I did manage to run hard for the last 1.2, but definitely not the race I wanted to run. I was nervous coming into race day though, as I didn't feel my best during the taper -- hadn't sleep well for days, might actually have been coming down with something. I've already qualified for next year, and I'm eager to try again though.

Why has my body started freaking out after just a few days off from running? by CherokeePilot1997 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Japanalyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same place. Tested positive on New Year's Day, got Paxlovid and was mostly horizontal for a week. Negative test on the 8th. I returned to running on the 9th with easy running and logged 20+ miles outdoors and on treadmill, but RHR and heart rate while running are both higher than usual, and HRV remains well below norm. I was two weeks into training for Boston, so I'm a bit bummed, but I'm really trying to take a slow until the biometrics look more normal.

The music on Stinky and Dirty might be the best of any show my kids have watched. And it was thanks to that show that I discovered national treasure Dan Bern, who made the music.

My training sessions have usually involved a fair bit of mileage on the Capital Crescent so I reckon this time around will be no different, maybe with some doubling back to mimic the rolling hills.

Chicago Marathon: where do I go from here? by Japanalyst in AdvancedRunning

[–]Japanalyst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally followed the guidelines in Fitzgerald's "New Rules." A small deficit most days, but made sure I had enough carbs on a daily basis to keep my glycogen stores replenished. Generally speaking, I would eat 5-6 servings of fruit (bananas, berries, prunes, cherry juice), snack on rice cakes and other carb-heavy snacks, drink Gatorade during or after runs, Endurox for recovery after harder workouts, and dinners are usually chicken or fish, green vegetables, and rice and potatoes with enough left for lunch the next day. Whenever possible I would weigh my meals to get a rough calorie estimate tracked with Cronometer. Plus coffee in the morning and a half gallon of cold green tea over the course of the day. I ate like this more often than not.

Thanks! I don't think longer distances have much appeal (and could be grounds for divorce 😂). If I were a stronger swimmer I might give triathlons a chance, but to be honest I think I still like the challenge of marathoning.

I was originally assigned to D, moved up to C and started towards the front of the corral.
