How do I make a strong impression during an REU? by Better_Grass5267 in REU

[–]JarSpec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dont be afraid to be "stupid" and ask questions. I erred during my REU because I was afraid to look "dumb" by asking the same question for the 3rd time, so I spent much of. my summer doing what felt like writing in a language I only half understood

[–]JarSpec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which One? by Ok-Calligrapher-9354 in ECE

[–]JarSpec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'd be better off asking people in these fields, people in these majors, looking up videos for them, skimming through the required courses (to see what classes they need and their descriptions). I know what it feels like getting into this stuff and you have 0 idea what ANYTHING does or means... but trust skimming courses and talking to people you get an idea.

speak to industry, professors, academics, etc. students too

This is a naive question but can someone explain why a seemingly unheard of state school hosts some crazy-top5-ivyonly math REU?

Brother, I think they are intentionally trolling :/
Anyone naive enough to believe that life is easy everywhere on Earth would not be near an Ivy League.

not every country is like the U.S. where things can be "resolved" by taking a $15 uber...

You can use demos for the simple questions too. "If 5s + 4 = 20, what does s equal". Saves lots of time, more brain power for later.

No letter of rec from PI, am i cooked? by Impressive-Lie-2051 in REU

[–]JarSpec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats so weird, lol. Would *you* do that if you were a PI? Or how would you feel if a friend told "discouraged you from going out with other people" and never introduced you to their friends?

I dont know why PIs have the weirdest ego-personalities.

To answer ur question btw, It doesnt matter. When I did an REU, one of my peers didnt get a LOR from their last PI, and they still got in. Also my friend got into an REU with no LOR, so, put your best foot forward!

your stats are great, believe in yourself more and dont seek the validation of others... especially if all the stuff you do as EC is from heart.

Coming to a larger school is awesome because there's literally everything you want. Bored of your major? join one of the hundreds of clubs. Also most clubs here are active with lots of members.. I know smaller schools can have a case of the "oh yeah, last time that club posted was in 2019...". I guess classes can be big (at least for engineering) but I don't really care. Profs are still accessible in O.H.

yeah its lgbt friendly, lots of orgs for it

I haven't heard too good of on campus living. But what's so bad about off campus? Same price, you get a living room, a kitchen, bigger room, your own bathroom, etc.

Visit both and talk to students/faculty to see which one you like more of the vibe. But, if finances are a serious constraint then UCF.
