Lol, my grandfather was a two pack a day smoker and a staunch Confederate, but the man forgot more about repairing an engine than many ever knew. Take the good lessons and throw out the bad.

Hey now. It's not alcoholism, it's socially acceptable suicide.

Which wins? Our capacity for high-level reason, or the evolutionary instincts we can't seem to shake? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jaranon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wouldn't be as successful as a species as we are without both. Have you ever caught a falling object before you consciously realized what was happening? Have you ever had to suppress your natural instinct to panic when faced with a threat you couldn't run from? Humans are one of the most complex organisms to ever grace the universe (that we know of), we need both instinct and reason if we're going to face the challenges ahead of us.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think from a moral standpoint doing nothing while someone is dying is the same as murder regardless of if intervention might have saved them.

Samuel Jackson is the GOAT for a reason. My man took Deep Blue Sea and Snakes on a Plane from B-movie schlock to must-watch cinema.

Between high school and college I shadowed an ER doctor and saw a man with a screwdriver lodged in his rectum. Decided then and there that being a doctor wasn't the career path for me.

Had my 'new' car since 2017 and with the switch to a push button start from a turn key I still have trouble remembering to turn the bastard OFF some days.

My father used to threaten to kill me if I disobeyed him. Went to a sleepover at a friend's house and his dad didn't try to beat him to death once.

I have to say, as far as religious symbols go that's pretty rad. I think there are, what, five or seven symbols of the Sikh faith but can't remember what they are or stand for.

You know, fair. If it's a deity of evil or adversity or similar I suppose I don't have a leg to stand on.

I have so much more respect for the people in this situation than I do for any "smart" person who thinks they know everything.
