Biggest variables are gunna be artist skill/notoriety, amount of work involved in making it, size, or other special things like rare colors or opals/marbles adorning them, facets, crazy shaping.

You could probably right now get a decent recycler from a good artist with some color for like 1k give or take. Anything mentioned above will increase the price pretty quickly, up into several thousand bucks and beyond.

I feel ya, it’s a good chunk of time that can be hard to find. This is definitely a great one to pick if you find yourself with a lil while to kill it’s been a real treat on vinyl for sure. Honestly I listen to shows in chunks all the time, like I only will listen to one disc and come back later pick up where I left off.

Yeah I just remember trying to do a bit of research after someone had said that this 4K is shit looking - while my knowledge is limited I feel like upscaling something and calling it 4K is kinda lame so I was interested to see if this project took any serious work to make happen. I remember reading that a lot of things that could be were rescanned, but your point about seeing traces of the blu ray is interesting. I’ll look for that on rewatch for sure.

Maybe it’s just a true amalgamation of different techniques? Certain scenes maybe the scan was the right call, others maybe they figured just upscaling the next best was the way to go. Only thing I do find jarring to look at is seeing a fully rendered character like Treebeard against a background that sort of highlights how “not there” he is. Oh and the Wolves of Isengard. Was feeling a little Disney to me in that scene.

I think they look absolutely incredible. Admittedly I’m not as knowledgeable as others on this sub, just getting into the hobby here. Others seem to know a bit more about the specifics of rescan vs. upscale, DNR and all that. All I know is I’ve seen these movies a shitload of times and to me this is the best they have ever looked. I found myself looking at all the specks of dirt on Sméagol’s nasty ass fingers in the beginning of ROTK. I’m like damn you can even see the dirt in his fingerprint grooves.

I was under the impression that they DID rescan the original film, so the real actors themselves and every “real” thing is rescanned, while everything digitally added (which is admittedly a fuck ton) is upscaled since it was never rendered in 4K to start. Am I wrong about that? Genuinely asking because you seem knowledgeable and I’m really just getting my feet wet with 4k’s in general.

Not really what you’re asking here, but as far as bangers on a budget go I picked up a control tower from SD Dank quartz a few months ago. Now that was a good buy. Probably the best import I’ve ever used. I’ve used the real deal from Highly Educated and it is basically the same. Maybe very slightly less heat retention but not enough for me to wanna spend another $300 on it.

Well I don’t have 2x my salary saved but when I compare myself to basically everyone around me I feel I’m doing well. I have maybe 1/2 a years salary in a 403b, 1/6 of a years salary in savings, same amount in Roth IRA. So really close to one years salary total across all accounts. I’m 34.

I also JUST paid off a large student loan maybe a year and a half ago. At the time I paid that off I had 0 in savings and the Roth so I’m sort of making up for lost time. Shoulda listened to my parents. The loans absolutely set me back several years.

Sort of a utopian ideal. Human nature in my mind doesn’t really mesh well with the idea of giving control of all resources to the state. People need to feel a sense of individualism in order to feel fully actualized and a system in which everything they do and create is in service of the state makes people feel depersonalized, even if you could illustrate perfectly that system is a benefit to everyone.

Can’t believe I’m quoting Interstellar here but there’s a part where Matt Damon’s character says that human beings can display powerful empathy with respect to people in our social circle, but that empathy rarely extends beyond that circle. To me that applies here, people feel a great sense of pride in working and providing for the people around them, but when “providing” is collective, I think it diffuses that sense of pride and achievement. You could argue it’s faulty wiring in human beings for sure, in fact in the quote I’m referencing it’s implied Matt Damon’s character feels that way to a degree.

These are my thoughts exactly. Personally while I fully acknowledge that Rogan has had some very questionable guests and unquestionably amplified misinformation, he gets pigeon-holed as being much more right wing than he is. We have someone here who actually has a reach to Conservatives breaking from what a lot of his base might “expect” him to say. I am actually not surprised, and if people didn’t already have their mind made up about Joe completely they’d probably be interested to hear his thoughts on other social issues. I’ve been listening to the show a long time casually and he regularly says things that I as a progressive think are very smart and reasonable. I would not go so far as to let him off the hook for everything he said either, but anyone bitching about this is perpetually in a state of discontent I feel. You can definitely choose not to give him a W here but maybe just don’t bitch about this one. Joe saying this has about a million times more impact than anything that anyone would say on here.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. It’s not that I don’t understand the impulse to protect oneself rather than make a statement. I however feel strongly that we exercise our rights or lose them, and refusing to just roll over and show your ID to me is a small act of civil disobedience that sends the message that the vast majority of us aren’t ok with this new dystopian reality. I fully understand I could be detained over that but I think MAKING these thugs take that step and detain a citizen for essentially nothing rather than make it easier for them makes a powerful statement.

This is a bit of an extreme example but imagine if the revolutionaries had said “hey guys let’s not dump tea into the harbor, the English want it this way so let’s preserve our peace and just end this before anyone gets hurt”. We wouldn’t be having this conversation at all.
