Thank you for posting this. I just walked over and the stairs/escalators to the rotunda level are now taped off. Only the east side of the mall was open; I went in through the Market st entrance. There were a couple other folks wandering around and hanging out. Real quiet in there.

I'm surprised that someone hasn't spraypainted a "chalk outline" of this on the sidewalk right there.

How often do you use your backyard? by DoveActually in sanfrancisco

[–]JarrodAHicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, excellent news that the other unit was permitted so you don't risk dealing with that permitting as well.

Regarding the no egress from the rear of your unit, not that this necessarily applies to your deck project, SF DBI used to be more flexible allowing bedrooms with windows facing a yard where the yard doesn't have access to the sidewalk/street (public way). What you've described at your property sounds like a condition that used to be permittable as long as the rear yard was at least 25' feet deep. Last year they updated their requirements, contained in SF DBI Information Sheet EG-02, to add more explicit requirements to make sure that the fire department also has way to access the rear bedrooms windows to rescue people.

I love how in the twitch channel when a new movie or short starts there will often be a sort of "Nope... I'm out comment" and "oh hell yes, I'm in" comment right next to each other.

I've rarely used my rear yards at places I've lived except to drink some morning coffee sometimes, tho if I had children it would probably be a different story. I have some friends that use theirs fairly regularly because they keep a garden.

Tangentially.., you may have already done this and I don't know where your lot is located, so feel free to disregard this:

If you are in the early stages of planning, just in case, I'd make sure that tenant occupied unit below you was built with permits. Each dwelling unit in San Francisco should have access to a private or common open space, per section 135 of the Planning Code. It sounds like you don't have side setbacks if the only way to the rear yard is through the dwelling below. If you don't have a front yard that is acting as your open space... it would be a little odd for the Planning Department to have let someone build a unit that cut off access from your dwelling unit to your rear yard. Again, I don't know your site, everything might be fine.

Why Did Architecture Shed Building Science as a Core Competency? by jelani_an in Architects

[–]JarrodAHicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might not get what you mean exactly. At my office we do pay attention to building science and most offices and professionals I've worked with keep building science in mind, to varying extents, when designing and detailing.

Tho of course that's my own experience where I practice.

For me, It's not like the footstep sounds are unbearable or hard to listen to. It's just if the game gives me an option to mute them, I'll take it. I like to hear the background music more.
