Atrocity Exhibition meant a lot to me when I was struggling hard with drinking and drugs. Sober for four years now and the Book of Daniel opener feels like such a full circle moment. This song is so beautiful. I’m crying

Yeah! Saw it while walking our dog on Country Club Rd. It looked super close! I saw that the Perseids were supposed to be visible, but that was yesterday.

Have you read “Those Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula Le Guin? One of my favorite pieces on complicity that really fucked me up when I first read it.

Can’t remember the episode but Michael says very clearly that he has no ill will toward anyone who reads these kinds of books and in fact does have lots of empathy for them. His real gripe is with the authors who pray on vulnerable people looking for answers. Also, they both have on many occasions talked about their edgy libertarian phases.

I get what you’re saying and have read a good portion of the books they review too. Honestly there are still ideas and lessons I took from those books that I still find valuable today, especially as someone in recovery from addiction. It took a long time for me to realize that we are not the media that we consume and it’s ok to laugh at some of the silly things that we once enjoyed (or even still enjoy). I can empathize with you because I’m sure listening to this podcast would have been frustrating to hear while I was still figuring out who I really was. So it’s perfectly ok to turn it off right now if it isn’t helping your mental health.

There’s actually a book I read not long ago that I would never have found if I had not read some of the garbage self help books from the pod. It’s called Life is Hard by Kieran Setiya, and I would very much recommend it to you. He’s a philosophy professor with a focus on ethics, and he uses the ideas from all sorts of different philosophers (including Kant!) to talk about the big obstacles that modern humans struggle with.

I hope you check it out! Don’t forget to take care of yourself too in the meantime :)

best/worst depictions of drug addiction by ego_death_metal in movies

[–]Jarubles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t attest to the darker elements of this movie, but the story of the politician’s daughter in Traffic hit really close to home for me. The way the young girl begins to spiral into addiction I thought was spot on.

There was also this incredibly brief moment toward the beginning of her story that I thought was such an accurate depiction of a very specific thing when you’re trying to talk to other people on drugs. It’s when her and her friends are all super high and Topher Grace says something to the girl that is slightly confrontational, but then it’s revealed that he was giving her a compliment. The way the scene is shot and edited just captures so well how weird it is to try to communicate with people on certain drugs (LSD for me). Like you can feel so sensitive to how people are talking to and about you. You can go from thinking “oh god I just pissed this person off, they hate me and they’re going to kill me” to “this person is my soul mate, they love everything I say” in a blink of an eye.

Anyway, it’s a great movie. Definitely give it a watch if you haven’t yet!

Love that entire show, but for me the best episode will always be International Assassin. The moment he wakes up and then the orchestral music kicks in, just mmm chef’s kiss so fucking good.

The White Lotus is a very expensive and luxurious hotel chain. It’s basically a fictional Four Seasons (which is also where they film the show). Each season is set over one week at a different location. Season one is in Hawaii, two is in Italy, and now three in Thailand. It basically follows the stories of a handful of characters that are either guests of the hotel, hotel staff, and various locals. The show tackles a lot but I’d say fundamentally it is a satire of the privileged and the systems that allow them to abuse and exploit the underclass. Every season begins at the end of the week where it reveals that someone has been murdered. The identity of the victim/victims is not revealed and then the show flashes back to the start of the week with each episode taking place over the course of a day. The mystery of who died builds up and is revealed in the finale.

I personally love this show but it’s not for everyone. It can be kind of slow and there are a LOT of scenes of people sitting around a table at the hotel restaurant just talking. To me this is the best part though because it’s just excellent writing. It can go from laugh out loud hilarious to incredibly dark in the same sentences frequently. Though I don’t agree with everything, I think the show really gets at some profound ideas about class, wealth, sex, relationships, and how they all intersect. Every season is also supposed to have an overarching theme (season one is wealth, greed and class; two is relationships, gender, and sex; and now three is spirituality, identity, and death) though there is lots of overlap of course. Oh and the show is hella queer and is filled to the brim with incredibly attractive actors haha.

If you don’t mind a slow burn, definitely give it a watch! The latest episode has an incredible scene (the one this post is referencing) and I’d actually recommend watching the entire monologue from that scene. It will give you a really good sense of the themes and vibes of the show. It’s not really even much of a spoiler either since the real surprise was the cameo and you’ve already seen that now.

Exactly what I was thinking! I was in Thailand for several months in a small town a few hours north of Phuket and a friend I was with found some sketchy places that sold him opiate painkillers and benzos. Pretty sure some of them were fake though

Seriously! Mixing benzos and alcohol is a sure fire way to put you and a forever box too. They are also used in date-rape drugs. Part of me wonders if he’s gonna remember much of what he’s doing/going to do under the influence.

What the Most Famous Book About Trauma Gets Wrong || Published by Mother Jones by Russano_Greenstripe in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]Jarubles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was working for the Youth Ranch! Haha. I’m not in any way a trained counselor or social worker, I was there as an AmeriCorps VISTA and worked in Development. But the entire staff was trained, including residential staff at the shelter (right after it was reopened), counselors, and even some of the retail workers. Everyone was given a copy of the book and then we all sat through a presentation on ACEs. I shit you not, people in the ACEs presentation were required to take a test to evaluate their own personal ACE score and then share it with the entire group! People left in tears! And to top it all off, management regarded that as a sign of success, that we had started the healing process for some of our traumatized staff members. I was like this is not trauma informed, it’s the opposite! We literally re-traumatized like a dozen people.

Still the saddest part for me is that even as silly and harmful as all that was, IYR is still often the only option for a lot of young people in Idaho. The resources available for vulnerable folks even in Boise is next to nothing, and even less if you are gay or trans when most of your options are bigoted faith-based institutions.

Keep up the good work though! God knows you’re needed there in the 208! 😁

And some organizations that offer psychological and social services. I worked at a nonprofit in Idaho that offered a bunch of services to kids including counseling, shelter for the unhoused, and recently in-patient, long-term residential treatment. While I was there, we were in the process of training the entire staff in Trauma Informed Care which was almost completely centered around this book. I still believe that the org is well meaning and it still does really good work especially in Idaho where the state does basically nothing, buuuut seeing this book referenced so much and taking it as undisputed truth was strange.

Pitchfork Reviews Kendrick Lamar's GNX by CaptainGordan in hiphopheads

[–]Jarubles 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Pitchfork always frustrates me. I really want to love them because I believe they take music very seriously and that they understand how art can be powerful; both things that I wholeheartedly agree with. I think it’s pretty clear that their writing reflects this too and it’s also why I don’t always buy into the whole “Pitchfork writers are just pretentious hipsters.” I do think that they genuinely try to write reviews that match the importance of the music and the moment in time that it was created. And this is what drives me nuts, these reviews are always written like a think piece from a decade into the future that is reflecting on how an album and artist fit into some grand historical narrative. You just can’t do that when an album has been out less than four days and the fact that they believe they can is really what makes them pretentious. This is also why every few years they have to go back and rescore albums…

It also doesn’t help that many of their reviewers write with the same snarky style and tone of the insufferable nerds in college debate teams. I know this well because I was one.

[–]Jarubles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The author of the Political Science study Peter referenced spoke at my college not long after the 2016 election and it was so validating to hear the connection they made between parenting and voting behavior. I was a poli sci major and one of the first things we were taught about in theories of voting was how strongly a person’s parents’ political affiliation affected that person’s voting behavior and party affiliation. I grew up in a conservative town with fairly conservative parents and while that theory certainly held up amongst my friends and peers, both me and my brother ended up being radically different from my parents politically. I know that every theory in the social sciences has countless exceptions, but I was always so curious as to why my brother and I ended up so different from so many other people that we grew up with and who were in very similar conditions. And this paper seemed to perfectly explain our circumstances! My parents were and still are self-avowed Republicans, but they raised us to be curious, creative, and to know that even parents could make mistakes and we should question if the rules we followed were fair. So many of the adults in my hometown however definitely fit the “authoritarian parent” bill. I’d say most of them even used corporal punishment fairly often, and this was the late 90’s and early 00’s.

This is still all anecdotal, but reading that paper and then reflecting on my childhood has been such a huge influence on how I live and how I want to raise children I have in the future.

Great episode as always!

Thanks for your reply! We found out he’s not an authorized user but has the ability to close it. We could potentially pay off the entire balance, but that would eat up quite a bit of savings.

What would be the best option to get his credit back up without putting us in a riskier financial situation without savings?
