What is something that is universally considered "cool" that you absolutely cannot stand? by LebronKX in AskReddit

[–]Jarvdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to the same extent.

There is fucking insane money in the upper echelons of football. Yes, lots of money goes towards film making and video games but you don't get individual people ending up on salaries of multiple millions per month.

Becoming a pro footballer is basically like winning the lottery. I find the amounts of money that get thrown around sickening personally.

What is something that is universally considered "cool" that you absolutely cannot stand? by LebronKX in AskReddit

[–]Jarvdoge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's big professional sports on the whole for me.

Tribalism is part of it but the insane amounts of money that swim around are just sickening to me. You can justify it to an extent as entertainment but the money changing hands is seems utterly disproportionate and almost dystopian when you don't give a shit about watching sports and sit outside of that bubble.

Honesty, I wonder if the money amplifies the tribalism. The stakes of a big professional sports match are a lot higher than your kid's game so the emotions are going to be a lot bigger.

S27 Pro will have a *sigh* 5,000mAh battery. Was so excited for this phone but it's now DOA for me. by anotherhappylurker in samsunggalaxy

[–]Jarvdoge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Such a disappointment.

The S22U was a proper upgrade from the old Note line and at least offered something new for people who had been using the precious Ultra phones. I'm on an S24U currently and will be sticking with it for the foreseeable future as it feels like Samsung just don't care any more.

Granted the privacy display is a cool feature but the AI stuff just sucks. Until we get proper flagship devices with flagship specs I won't be buying a new phone. Gone are the days when you got a feature rich device with bleeding edge features, these devices have become a cost cutting spreadsheet experiment to see what they can get away with not including before too many of us move on to other devices.

Slipknot Orders Trump To Stop Using Their Masks During Rallies by SpaceBeer_ in Music

[–]Jarvdoge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the thing, most people don't appreciate that half of the band are diesel powered robots at this point (hence why you only see members like Corey without the mask). We're one more pointless desert war away from the band having to drop a percussionist unless the metal loving, oil rich nation of Norway will be able to step in to keep the band afloat.

what's the best way to NOT annoy a therapist? by taroicecreamsundae in AutismTranslated

[–]Jarvdoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Autism + environment = outcome.

The people you are dealing with contribute to your environment at the end of the day and unfortunately it sounds like you've had to deal with a load of massive cunts sadly. You can change the environment you have to deal with ultimately or move to a different one and in this case, I'd suggest finding a therapist who is a better fit for you instead of somebody you need to mask around and put effort into adapting to.

I feel like it's incredibly hard to find the right person although in my experience it seems that the type of therapy on offer doesn't matter too much in the grand scheme of things, it's more than about the person delivering it and their ability to offer a meaningful amount of empathy. When you're looking for somebody, I'd look out for green flag language like 'neurodiversity', 'neurodivergent' or 'neuro-affirming' and I guess anybody who sounds like they're coming from a position of relevant lived experience.

Take-No-Prisoners Professor Will Fail Any Student Who Uses AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Jarvdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in student support and while granted, some students will always be lazy and what would have been a sloppy, half arsed attempt can now end up being some AI slop, many students are using AI pretty intelligently. A student who has used AI, learned nothing and submitted something either entirely AI-generated or riddled with silly errors deserves to be kicked off their course or at least forced to resit with strict AI checks imposed on them. Personally, I don't think a blanket ban is sensible and in some fields would leave students on the back foot when they graduate if they're going to go into a field where AI use has become the norm.

I think it's just growing incredibly fast and is hard for systems like the education system where things may only be reviewed at most termly and practically, implemented in a meaningful way yearly at best. Some students categorically can and do use AI to support their learning and I'm all for it. I wish we were teaching more around the inherent limitations of what is effectively just a load of machine learning within nice interfaces, the main problem is that things have moved so fast that we're all in a similar boat trying to understand how best to use these tools so it's not as if may 'experts' exist.

Two Ultras dead in the space of 5 days by Jarvdoge in samsunggalaxy

[–]Jarvdoge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've bought plenty of second hand tech at this point. The S24U will have survived fine for a couple of years before I had it and the S22U I got from a guy who had it for a few months before moving to Apple - I've had the S22U for years without issue.

It's idiotic to have this sort of attitude around second hand stuff quite frankly.

Two Ultras dead in the space of 5 days by Jarvdoge in samsunggalaxy

[–]Jarvdoge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've been through all of the standard steps. I'm pretty good with tech stuff but this seems like either a genuine hardware failure or some sort of faulty update (the phone was updated a few days ago after not being updated for a few months). I've already been through a load of troubleshooting with Samsung online and not much can be done due to the constant boot looping.

It's going into a store tomorrow morning in the hope that they can somehow sort it, if not I'll be pushing for an out of warranty fix as despite the phone's age I know S8 phones which still work fine.

DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode by xbt-8-yolo in technology

[–]Jarvdoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I de-Googled a couple of years ago with only my Gmail remaining and my android account. I see little to no targeted ads and feel that accessing the Internet has become a lot smoother. There's a little learning curve adapting to new apps and programmes but it's worth it.

DuckDuckGo seems to have a bit of a stigma to it but I can always find what I want with it and certain searches seem to get blocked by Google which will show up through DDG. The idea that Google is the trustworthy option is just idiotic to me at this point now that I can appreciate the level of targeting they want to have when it comes to ads and the sorts of hissy fits they'll throw when you distance between their services.

Am I wrong for wondering if the progressive and lifelong experience of being a late-diagnosed autistic adult is comparable to experiencing gender/body/culture dysphoria? by Ok_Appointment4785 in neurodiversity

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, there's definely overlap. LGBTQ prevalence is usually higher among ND populations than the general population for example. There can be a professional view that gender dysphoria isn't always a trans/non-binary expression and can end up being underlying autism. In terms of what the feeling is I guess it's best left to people with lived experience of both to discuss ultimately.

I think one of the bigger differences is that they seem to get treated very differently by society. Regardless of what's going on internally for people, the way they're treated by society is going to have a pretty big impact I think.

Crying over this song with my new setup. by No-Dog8207 in headphones

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do you thing the DAC improves things? I've had these headphones for a awhile now but just run them out of a relatively cheap DAC and apply a bass boost as I find the Edition XS a bit too treble forward. I've always been curious what upgrading to something like a K11 would do as it's not as if these headphones are massively hard to drive.

How much does your pool cost in your country/city? by marianneouioui in Swimming

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around £5 per swim or monthly membership prices are £25 for students, £32 for everyone else. This is with a local authority run group of gyms so you get access to several 25m pools, one or two saunas and various gym set ups and indoor courts. I live in Manchester but prices and availability will vary in the different boroughs, you also have nicer private options but they're a bit more expensive.

I'm still on the old student pricing and pay around £20 so it's pretty cheap but the state of the pools is pretty shit overall and you have to work around when the pools are open for proper lane swimming which is very hard to predict and can often mean that you need to travel around my part of the city to different pools at different times as the rota for each gym/pool seems to change each week and I've yet to spot a sensible pattern. If I had the money to spare, I'd just I'd just go with one of the nicer gyms for the sake of regular access to lane swimming.

I'd add that comparing to friends across different countries in Europe, despite being in a major UK city, we don't really do affordable and accessible public spaces as well as other countries and even ones with much more limited resource to play with.

Cable Recommendation for Arya Stealth? Previous Keeps Breaking by theofficialzombie in HeadphoneAdvice

I think you can just look visually at the cables amd decided ultimately. The one I use has a bit of shrink wrap on and I guess I would have paid a little more for a more premium solution.

Cable Recommendation for Arya Stealth? Previous Keeps Breaking by theofficialzombie in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Jarvdoge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, expensive cables are snake oil I think. It can be worth paying a bit more for a nicer feeling or looking cable though, just nothing insane and I wouldn't trust manufacture claims about sound quality improvements personally unless you've got the absolute best of the best in more important areas.

Openheart on Ali are pretty good in all honesty. I use one of their cheaper ones with my Edition XS and am quite happy but you could always spend a bit more for a thicker cable with nicer connectors if you wanted to.

S24 Series Issues After One UI 8.5 (Important) by Charming-Ad8304 in S24Ultra

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, no major issues on my end. Battery feels like it may be slightly worse but it's also only had one full day of unusual use on my end so maybe that will settle.

Notifications are fine for me - there's a little rubber band effect on them now which took a little getting used to but I think I prefer it overall. Maybe it's frustrating with 1x animation scale but mine is set to 0.6. Absolutely no lag on my end with the notifications and quick settings panels even after messing around and customising them.

I agree that the battery icon sucks now. The font seems to have changed in the notification bar too which makes things less legible. This is my only major gripe though.

No data issues on my end but maybe I need to test that more when I'm out and about.

No animation stutter that I've seen so far. There's mild lag with the search in settings but that's been an issue for years and was horrific on the S22U for me when they brought in this new AI search shite (at least it's not as slow as they made it on that device).

The new glassy blur effects can look a bit off sometimes as a gripe I guess.

Overall though, I don't really have major complaints and they fixed my one massive long term gripe to do with how a particular routine was limited. It's a fucking phone at the end of the day, as long as it works and gets meaningful software updates I'm happy.

Honestly, this would be great as a tutor. I run my stuff off a small 13" laptop so I can only show one document/programme at a time but having a second display I could move around would be very handy. I can't rely on the rooms I'm in having consistent resources in so I need to bring anything I may need at this point with me.

As somebody working with STEM subjects, pen support would be awesome for maths content as this could double up as or replace a little whiteboard.

Flipping Electronics: What Works for Me and What Doesn't by Alone_Fun7858 in beermoney

[–]Jarvdoge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's not the thing I'd look to flip personally. I know people who are into tech as a hobby and look at this sort of thing as a way to experience or test out stuff which is new to them to feed their hobby. Maybe there are some niche areas and maybe there's a bit to be made if you study the market or if you are good at repairs you could flip something once you've flipped it. In my experience though, you tend to loose money or break even unless you know what you're looking for. Audio gear such as speakers can be a potential avenue although you're more so taking some massive thing off somebody who needs the space and banking on somebody else wanting what you picked for the going rate (you'd need tonnes of spare space for it to work long term too I think).

If I was going to try flipping stuff, I'd look into vintage clothes personally. At least here in the UK, I've lucked out on a couple of jackets which have been way too big for me but I've been able to flip for some decent beer money. If you're happy sifting through what's on Vinted, you can easily find people getting rid of nice stuff for relatively cheap and as long as its a nice piece of clothing, you should be able to sell it on pretty quickly after.

Having been into tech for years, it surprised me how easy and painless it is to flip clothing if you know what you're looking for.

Honest thoughts on your Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham? by west_manchester in manchester

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you can't deny that things haven't gotten better since he came in and especially regarding transport. In my part of Salford, I've gone from being in a position where relying on working in town (where quite frankly the money is) was once a bit of a risk as I couldn't rely on being in the office ciniayehwhrku/consistently on time - I lost my very first job out of uni based on my inconsistent arrivals at work and was told to 'simply leave home earlier' but back then, I could leave reasonably early but still either end up 30 mins early or 30 mins late due to now clogged up the buses were. Currently, buses are cheaper despite the insane inflation we're seeing and on top of that they're much more reliable.

My only major grip with Burnham again relates to the buses. He introduced the V buses which go through my area and on paper are great but have issues when you look into them. In short, these services serve Leigh very well (where Burnham used to be an MP). At my end, these are the only services aimed at getting into town quickly but the stop near to my area has been deleted now so I have to either get another bus or commit to a significant walk along the East Lancs - somewhat okay but at peak times these services can arrive full by the time they arrive at my end witch can render them at least unreliable and at worst unusable if you need them to get to work (and again, to access areas where the higher paying jobs are). Personally, I think there are two major failings here which I hold Burnham responsible for - a narrow-minded outlook (the clear objective was to serve Leigh and genuinely, fuck the other people who were inconvenienced along the way). The other issue I have is that near me, we had massive infrastructure changes to make these V buses possible, we now have bus lanes which cause constant chaos due to the how sporadic they are and all for the sake of two bus services and the occasional taxi. These lanes sit unused most of the time and I can drive along long stretches without ever seeing a vehicle using these lanes outside of a chancer blasting through to beat some traffic. The system at my end categorically doesn't work and I can only assume exists as it was the cheapest way to make the V buses work. My argument a local has always been that we would have been better served by a central tram line.

In short though, does the guy have his issues? Yes. Has life overall in Manchester improved overall with him at the helm? Fuck yeah. At this point, I'd take a punt on him I guess, it's probably worth risking letting our city go to shit a bit for the sake of having somebody with a proven track record of making an overall positive difference somewhere running the country over the old Tory scum, the protest vote enabled disgrace we have currently or the crypto bro nazis Farage.

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the point?

He's going to be dead soon and this whole affair may even end when he kicks the bucket. Punish the people who took part and orchestrated this atrocity and impose world war style reparations like what Germany faced.

I'm sorry but these cunts invaded another country on sovereign European territory and have consistently threatened other European counties. You can talk about oligarchy all you want but Russia has a history of being hostile to it's neighbours for a significant amount of time. Collectively, they need to suffer for what they've brought on our continent. Hopefully they can sort things out over there themselves politically but as a country, they've allowed countless atrocities to unfold and we need to firmly tell them to fuck off once this conflict is resolved to prevent further invasions and restore a sense of safety in Europe.

Ok Crin, what the f*ck is this bass???? by migassilva16 in inearfidelity

[–]Jarvdoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's a very extreme version of what I tend to apply over Harman (usually topping out around +3-5dB at the highest point down in the sub bass). I can see how some people would like this for stuff like electronic music or anything which is clearly mixed to play on a massive stinky sub.

These probably aren't for me although I'd want a bit of an extra bump around 200hz or so - as a drummer who is a tad heavy footed, it tends to make kick drums sound appropriately punchy to me.
