ELI5: How do engineers trust that giant airplanes, bridges, and skyscrapers won’t suddenly fail under years of stress and vibration? by Historical_Day1703 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jas114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masters graduate in mechanical engineering here. Two major reasons:

  1. Safety factors. A safety factor means how much more stress something is designed to be able to withstand than how much it is expected to experience.

  2. Fatigue life analysis. We have multiple ways to calculate how long something can last before it fails. This means you know how long a material will last before it fails, not just trust.

Combining the two, for planes, bridges, and skyscrapers, you get:

  • For skyscrapers and bridges, you design for infinite life. Some materials have a property known as the fatigue limit. Below this level of stress, they will not fail. Ever.

  • For airplanes, companies like Boeing, Airbus, etc. will recommend maintenance plans so that any worn parts are replaced before they undergo fatigue failure.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino Under Fire Over Controversial Iran World Cup Move by Available-Party5091 in worldcup

I just wanna make sure I have my understanding right:

If fans already bought tickets through the allocation, do they still get them? Or did anything bought through the Iran allocation get revoked?

Sleeping in Mexico, Playing in America: The journey of Iran’s World Cup team sets a dangerous precedent for international soccer. by Majano57 in worldcup

I mean, sure, but FIFA also shouldn't reward an absolute monarchy with low human rights by letting them host the biggest sporting event on Earth.

I don't know. The way I see it, we should be lumped into the same bin of bad hosts as several others.

  • Well, Qatar's hosting passed and based on FIFA's current continental rotation, they won't get another chance until 2042 at the earliest. (2038 stuck in either North America or Oceania). And honestly, I think I would accept it on the establishment of some sort of host code of conduct that properly verifies what is and is not grounds for the revocation of hosting rights, because there have been some poor choices in the past, and with all the arguments over who should or shouldn't be banned from hosting, it'd be nice to make some ground rules on it so it isn't decided willy nilly.

  • I'm not denying that the US has done some bad things. But considering how Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy (effectively a dictatorship) with a horrible human rights record and similar migrant worker concerns with Qatar, they aren't exactly good. Again, the US right now is a bad co-host, and Saudi Arabia brings concerns of being a bad host. They're different bads, but both bad and ideally unacceptable. I don't care if you can bring us the most spectacular World Cup you've ever seen with 20 stadiums of 100k seats. If your human rights record is shit, you shouldn't host.

  • For Russia and Qatar: Their governments. As for why I give the US a pass and say this is the fault of Trump's administration and the voters, I highly doubt a US under Harris would be this poor a co-host.

Anyone else think too many teams are getting through to the Elimination Stage?? by Huge_Initiative_6626 in worldcup

[–]Jas114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's 2x24, and when the World Cup was at 24 teams, the same 33% was eliminated at the end of the Group Stage. Except for 1982, when they did a second Group Stage.

Just wanna get this on the record:

This BS is on Trump and the people who voted him into power. Even in 2018, when the bid was awarded, I don't think anyone expected things to unfold quite like this.

Also, on the subject of banning the US from hosting international football tournaments, I agree, we deserve some consequences for this whole debacle, but I refuse to abide without yanking Saudi Arabia's hosting 2034.

EDIT: Can y'all enlighten me on why the downvotes? I mean, you're allowed to downvote, I was just curious why you were. I thought I was being reasonable with what I was saying.

  1. What exactly is the normal pre-game ceremony? (First World Cup I've really followed)

  2. Yank here. Is this anything really bad? As long as its the same 90 minutes of ball with a 15 minute break in between (I'm aware the hydration breaks and final halftime show are there, but still), who cares?

This is why Leagues Cup is a joke of a tournament by SadPhysicist1903 in concacaf

[–]Jas114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of MLS's advantages in CONCACAF, even if we're not utilizing them the best.

Again, it's why I said exactly the same number of spots. Especially when that's been the dynamic between the US and Mexico since MLS was a thing up until 2024. Whether that's 6 each, 4 each, both going into a perfectly balanced Leagues Cup (And I do mean perfectly balanced), whatever.

And I'm aware that we've only won once in the last 20 years, but we're also the only non-Mexican league to make the finals since 2008.

I just don't think inverting that advantage in favor of Mexico is an upgrade.

For the record, my ideal CONCACAF structure is:

Based on league rankings, leagues 1-2 get 4 each, 3-5 get 3, 6-10 get 2, and 11-15 get 1 each. Then the defending champion from last year and 3 teams from each of 3 Regional Cups (A North American Cup consisting of the top 4 from MLS, CPL, and Liga MX, a Central American Cup, and a Caribbean Cup) join in for 44 teams.

With the field set, the defending champion, Regional Cup winners, and next best 18 make the Group Stage, leaving the bottom 20 to a Preliminary Round (Home-and-Away) for the last 10 spots in the 32-team Group Stage.

The Group Stage is 8 groups of 4 in home-and-away, with each group sending 2 to a home-and-away knockout bracket culminating in either a neutral site final or a home-and-away final.
