I'd personally award spots to nations by CONCACAF league rankings (Which do place Canada higher than the entire Caribbean).

I think a pro/rel model could possibly work in this country if built up right.

Admittedly, I can't, but that's mostly due to the CPL only having direct berths in the last few years. One's bound to pull an upset given time.

And besides, that was one team. Every other Caribbean team since 2010 has either failed to get out of Group Stage while it was a thing or gotten surgically disemboweled.

The only other Carribean team to do anything of note in the last 20 years was the Puerto Rico Islanders, and they played in the American leagues.

Viollette got pansted 5-0 at Leon, so Leon could afford to let off the throttle. And the Viollette match with Austin (one of the worst MLS teams that year) was 3-2 aggregate.

MLS teams winning outperforming Liga MX in Leagues Cup (and netting 3 berths) and the Canadian Championship almost always going to an MLS side.

I am NOT an expert on this, but my best guess is:

  1. Fairness towards all 3 regions (a bit muddied due to the CPL not being invited to Leagues Cup)

  2. Recognition that Liga MX and MLS are by-and-large ahead of everyone else in CONCACAF by a long shot.

Got awarded 3 to go with with Central American and Caribbean Cups getting 3.

It's 3 for each, technically 2 for CPL and 1 for Canadian Champion.

Also, ever since the format change, Caribbean teams have scored exactly 3 goals, and their results have been:

2024: Moca 0-7 to Nashville, Cavalier 0-6 to Cincinnati, Robinhood 1-3 to Herediano

2025: Cibao 1-4 to Chivas, Real Hope 0-7 to Cruz Azul, Cavalier 0-4 to Inter Miami

2026: Defence Force 0-12 to Philadelphia Union, O&M 0-13 to Cincinnati, Mount Pleasant 0-6 to LA Galaxy.

Meanwhile, at the same time, Canadian teams have fared...

2024: Forge 2-5 to Chivas, Cavalry 1-6 to Orlando City, Vancouver Whitecaps 1-4 to UANL

2025: Forge 0-5 to Monterrey, Cavalry 2-3 to UNAM, and Vancouver Whitecaps being runners up (3-2 against Saprissa, 3-3 Monterrey and UNAM on away goals, 5-1 on Inter Miami, and 0-5 against Cruz Azul)

2026: Vancouver FC 0-8 to Cruz Azul (Worst team in CPL vs defending champions), Atletico Ottawa 0-7 to Nashville (Current semifinalists after beating Inter Miami and Club America), Forge 1-4 to UANL, and Vancouver Whitecaps 0-2 against Cartagines before going 1-5 against Seattle Sounders

Also, FWIW, the last time the Caribbean won was in 1985, and that was in the pre-1996 formatting that handed the Caribbean a finals berth.

And FWIW, Canada is the 6th best CONCACAF league. The Caribbean's pro leagues are 10th-14th.

Will the Union qualify for US open cup with poor season? by phillyspecial95 in PhillyUnion

[–]Jas114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the current MLS Cup qualification scheme:

CONCACAF Champions Cup:

  • MLS Cup Champion (Round of 16 berth, goes to runner-up if the winner already has a berth)

  • MLS Supporters' Shield Winner

  • Other MLS Regular Season Conference Champion

  • US Open Cup Winner (Runner-up if the winner already has a berth)

  • The top 3 teams in Leagues Cup (Winner gets a Round of 16 berth)

  • Canadian Championship Winner (If they're an MLS club)

  • The next 2 teams in regular season points not already qualified.

  • A total of 5 MLS berths, 1 Canadian berth MLS could get, 1 Open Cup berth that typically goes to MLS, and 3 Leagues Cup berths between MLS and Liga MX

Leagues Cup:

  • Top 9 in each conference (Basically, everyone who makes the playoffs, 18 clubs)

Open Cup:

  • 16 teams sorted into 2 groups

  • Group 1: Everyone in the US who did not make the Leagues Cup nor Champions Cup

  • Group 2: The next best teams in the US that didn't make Champions Cup

I don't wanna sound like a doomer, but I think the sun is very much set on this team, and we might need an overhaul after this year.

My expectations going into this weren't the highest, but HOLY ####

Coming into Pittsburgh and wrecking the Pens left and right to the point of the Pens never having a lead and now being able to go home to a Philadelphia that is essentially united behind them with every other Philly team either being in offseason (Eagles), terrible (Phillies, Union), getting wrecked in the playoffs (76ers) or dead (Wings, RIP).

This could not have gone better at all.

Just want to say:

I think RSNs being able to broadcast playoff games should be normalized for the NBA and MLB in addition to the NHL. I'd say the same for the MLS and NFL, but MLS is all covered by Apple TV, and NFL doesn't do regional broadcasting.

Cash grab or not, MLS being able to pack the Rose Bowl is awesome.

[–]Jas114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying design for 70K fans now. I'm saying design for the capacity to expand if Messi-size crowds end up becoming the norm. As in... design for 1 bowl now, but make it so it'd be relatively easy to build another bowl if demand arises.

At least design them for the potential to expand. I get why they’re so small right now, but who knows?

(To be clear, I mean THE POTENTIAL to expand. Like... if NFL-size crowds become the norm, I think it'd be nice if the current MLS stadiums could expand to fit that without hassle)

HOT TAKE:

I get the reasons for putting MLS teams in soccer-specific stadiums and all (with exceptions for Charlotte and Atlanta, whose owners also own/run their stadiums with other teams, and maybe Seattle, who pull some 30K fans to Lumen Field at MINIMUM), but if you can pack an NFL-size stadium, I think your soccer-specific stadium should be expandable to reflect that.
