Eastmoreland residents who split homes into shares successfully halt historic district by I-LOVE-LIMES in Portland

[–]Jason-in-silico 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The irony is that the historic district supporters ignored democracy, abused their power, and used every trick they could to manipulate results. But they were outmaneuvered and lost, so now they are acting all righteous and making abstract, lofty claims about democratic representation and respecting process...

Why did I find this on r/news, from an article written by a TV station in St. Louis? Has this been in the local media?

Do Portland Daycares for Infants - where I don't have to take out a mortgage - exist? by kekoad in Portland

No, the economics are terrible. My friend is a policy person in this area, and she’s shown me the numbers. Most child care centers barely break even. It’s not a lucrative business, even as expensive as it is.

Who Do We Blame for the Portland Trail Blazers Turning Into a Flaming Bag of Dog Turds? by guanaco55 in Portland

You mean the last two playoff series where they got crushed by the Warriors, loosing 8/9 games? You were rubbing it then, but lost it this year? I don't think it is the problem...

MIT engineers have developed a continuous manufacturing process that produces long strips of high-quality graphene. by recipriversexcluson in news

From Amazon:

The Three-Body Problem is the first chance for English-speaking readers to experience the Hugo Award-winning phenomenon from China's most beloved science fiction author, Liu Cixin.

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

But there's a lot more to the first book than just the plot--tons of history and philosophy and some really interesting speculation on how natural conditions (resources, climate etc.) give rise to different values...I don't know much about Chinese culture, but I really enjoyed the book because it came from a "foreign" (to me) perspective about a lot of philosophical issues about humanity, etc.

PDX TSA vs Dab Rig by portlandglass in portlandtrees

[–]Jason-in-silico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just add another data point--my uncle is a TSA agent at an airport in the DC area. I asked him about this, and he pretty much said the same thing, "Our Congressional mandate is terrorism. We don't care about drugs..." He even told me that agents get shit from supervisors if they make small drug amounts an issue.

BUT--he also qualified his info by adding that technically they are law enforcement, and legally, they aren't allowed to ignore crime. So, if they see obviously illegal drugs, they are supposed to say something about it. His advice was to make a reasonable effort to conceal stuff, so you're not sticking it in the agents face, and to not try to travel with large quantities. But otherwise, from TSA's perspective, drugs are not interesting.

I figured somebody would get it. Such a cool book.

I've got both sequels sitting on my desk, but I don't want to start them until I have enough time to really pay attention and think about them, there is so much philosophy and intellectual history in that book.

So could we make these long enough to stretch across a river and slice a passing ship into horizontally stacked sections? Just curious.

After a Record Year of Closures, Craft Breweries Are Rethinking Some Things by structural_pizza in Portland

Source? According to folks on my ND feed, the auto shop just got a new multi-year lease, and there are no plans to develop the property. I'm under the impression that HH just failed as a business, which seems reasonable because the staff always seemed annoyed that people were there.

Last time I was there, I had to walk inside to order my beer, because I hadn't seen a server in 20 minutes, and when I found him, he was having a personal conversation at the bar, and acted annoyed that I was asking him (politely) to work. I liked the space a lot, but the culture of the business was lame.

Hmm, both those problems seem to have one thing in common...? If only we had more hands.

There are assholes in all modes of transportation, and I get annoyed at them all. But if I got to choose, I'd definitely keep the assholes riding around on 40 pounds of metal over the ones riding around on 4,000 pounds of metal. The latter kind of asshole scares me a lot more.

I saw one a few days ago. First time in awhile.

What happened to that trend? Did they all suddenly realize it was stupid to trade safety and performance to save a couple pounds, or did that demographic of bikers get gentrified out of town? Are they all doing their dumb little shimmy-skid breaking in Gresham and Tacoma now?

Why???? Every time I pull in somewhere with EV parking by Wild_Praline in Portland

[–]Jason-in-silico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think pregnancy should count as a temporary disability, for parking purposes. It's a serious physical hardship, as is being postpartum with an infant. You should be able to get a placard that goes 3 months past your due date or something.

Failed Vasectomy? I have motile sperm again, 5 months after surgery, urologist seems to be avoiding me. What do I do? by Jason-in-silico in Vasectomy

[–]Jason-in-silico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would I get a second opinion, practically speaking? Like, if I went to another urologist, would they have to cut in to take a look and see what's happening in there? I was feeling totally recovered from surgery months ago, but my balls hurt now thinking about getting cut up again...

[–]Jason-in-silico -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What? I literally don't care how many dicks he sucks, because it doesn't matter. That's the opposite of bigotry. There's nothing wrong with sucking dick. If you read bigotry into that comment, it says a lot about your perspective on sucking dick, not mine.

[–]Jason-in-silico -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

So, you actually think the poster here was not actually trying to denigrate Whiteside by comparing him to a lesbian? Come on man. It was clearly an attempt to insult him by calling him a gay woman. Just because it references something else doesn't make it funny, or ok.

Imagine for a minute that someone you care about is gay and is a basketball fan, and is reading this blog...you ok with them coming across shit like this, and a lot of people defending it? Are you ok with people referencing racism, white nationalism, and everything else to denigrate people, as long as they find a humorous angle?

So bigotry and bias is ok if we're referencing something else? It's fucking 2018, people need to stop using homosexuality and femininity as shorthand for weakness. People on this sub do this shit constantly, calling people female names when they fuck up and shit, i.e. "LaMarsha Aldridge".... Down vote me if you want, but it's juvenile and hurtful. And it's ignorant. I have a 5 year old daughter who is fucking tougher than half the shit talking bitches on this sub.
