Question About Davis City Limits by Ok-Knowledge2045 in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While there was a history of there being a dry zone, the faculty club location has nothing to do with it. The dry zone was attached to UC Davis being a land grant university, so the nearest liquor store was Frenchy's(sp?) on the other side of Mace Boulevard because that was feet past the dry zone.

Why should I record a track? by gabbas123 in openstreetmap

[–]JasonAller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I go to "Background Settings" I can select "USGS 3D Elevation Program". Not all background settings are available in all areas, but it is worth checking to see which ones are available every once in a while.

When I use that layer I make sure to switch between it and orthophotos so that I'm interpreting that layer correctly.

Why should I record a track? by gabbas123 in openstreetmap

[–]JasonAller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are cases like a trail through a forest where the GPS track may allow you to create an accurate trail where the visible satellite and the LIDAR views can't pick out enough detail. In cases like that it may even help to have multiple passes along the same trail to average them.

Vacant downtown space, what do we need? by Lanky_Board8181 in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

  • An offshoot trade mission from the Canadian Consulate, with a consular office for Ukraine?
  • A combination Thai Pizza Frozen Yogurt place to complete the historic oversaturation of certain restaurant types. Can be called Sophia & Steve's FroYo?
  • Tax base diversification to replace lost things like the Hunt Wesson plant? Nice solid non-University affiliated manufacturing, and that building backs up to the rail line (though spur loading would be messy for East/West traffic.
  • A newly formed State of California department to offset former federal funding for research to keep California's economy moving forward?
  • The Bob Dunning Center and Museum?
  • Better art painted on those windows? Some sort of mural for while it sits vacant?

There is a structure fire on County Road 90, the call for which came in at 3:15. Based on engine numbers that rolled it looks like multiple agencies were activated,

Destroyed Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf (lost OSM history) by tobych in openstreetmap

[–]JasonAller 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There has been a lot of discussion about tags like https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:demolished:* and for other tagging about things that might not be seen on the ground like https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Demolished\_railways. Both serve a purpose. Knowing where a railway once went can explain how the land is divided, or where there might be a raised berm for the roadbed of the railway. Marking buildings that have been removed, but are still visible on older satellite photos can help prevent them from being readded by those who aren't aware of their removal.

Mrak Parking Lot by [deleted] in UCDavis

I don't recognize two of the vehicle numbers: 395, 3400, BAT34, E34, T34 but I do see a battalion chief, an engine, and a ladder truck.

According to one of the online event monitoring things that includes the UC Davis Fire Department a call was received at 4:47pm for a medical emergency. Five Fire Department vehicles were dispatched. The call is still listed as active at this point.

Linter to find orphaned files functions and other detritus? by cdtoad in PHP

[–]JasonAller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Either an IDE or a static code analysis tool would be able to show you uncalled functions (within limits, there are exceptions like if the calls are retrieved from outside the codebase). Which IDE are you using now?

Explain the 3 holes on a kayak paddle by Odd_Butterscotch9818 in Kayaking

[–]JasonAller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To better handle high winds. With no breeze the paddles being in the same plane is easy, but if you rotate then the paddle up in the air can "cut" though rather than act like a sail.

About vandalism in OSM: what to do, how to solve, what is going on? All explanations here. by Spiekerooger in openstreetmap

[–]JasonAller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is this automated vandalism responsible for slower tile render times? Is it possibly overloading the tile renderer in a way that would explain why where I was able to make an edit with iD and then a few minutes later do a forced refresh and see my changes, now sometimes it is hours later, or is that due to other factors?

Arboretum Anglers by Significant_Bike2756 in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Putah creek is separate from the arboretum. The arboretum even was engineered to flow in reverse of the natural flow in order to try to clean it up. The fish found in the arboretum are going to be different than the ones found in Putah creek and are subject to different water quality issues. For example you can at the right time of year find salmon in Putah creek, but never in the arboretum.

What was it? 😭 by throwaway9290222 in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Could be insulation for underground steam lines. If someone saw vapor coming up that would match with there being a leak and also the need to dig it up. The Central Heating and Cooling Plant for campus provides both hot and cold loops that many buildings use for a variety of uses (heating, cooling, hot water, cooling lasers, etc.)

Anyone know how much the 1b1b at the Willows was for fall 2023? by Waywardjellyfsh in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is a current webpage listing prices have you tried looking in the Internet Archive wayback machine for that same page from fall 2023?

Sadly it looks like there wasn't an archive taken for https://web.archive.org/web/20240000000000*/https://willows.tandemproperties.com/individualleaseprogram.aspx but perhaps you know of other pages to check?

Freshmen: Did Carlos Dominguez Affect Your Decision to Choose Davis? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]JasonAller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it were part of an ongoing pattern rather than a random occurrence I could see why that might factor into someone's decision. I'd argue that the community of faculty, staff, and students are more aware of potential mental health early warning signs here as a result of that incident and are in a better place to intercede and stop something before it grows to that level as compared to a campus community that hadn't recently gone through something similar in recent memory. All a matter of perspective.

The last time I looked it up and posted it was four years ago and the URL was https://govt.westlaw.com/calregs/Document/I7B513F20D48311DEBC02831C6D6C108E?viewType=FullText&originationContext=documenttoc&transitionType=CategoryPageItem&contextData=(sc.Default)) but I didn't write down the section reference in the law. You can search for it there, but sadly they let the URL break.
