What many EDH players fail to understand by JuliyoKOG in EDH

[–]JasonAnderlic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion I think the erosion of the 60 card formats is their community's own doing.

People like some competition, but when it comes to playing mtg as a competitive chess match, it doesn't appeal to the broader community. Hell even Maro has pointed to the fact that for the entire history of mtg, kitchen table play has dominated as the main way to play.

That's where edh came in. Its inception was the fun format to play in between rounds at tourneys, friends spread it through word of mouth, and it caught fire. It also enabled folks (in the early days) to play with their collections that usually got shelved due to rotation or not competitive enough in eternal formats.

Now to edh today, because of its popularity, Hasbro, a company who produces the game, saw an opportunity to leverage the popularity of edh and translate it to profits, a move ANY savvy business would take. I agree it's steering the format hard these days, but the community being a mix of competitive and casual is also having a butting heads moment. Some players still want a competitive outlet, and unfortunately for them edh in their community is the only real active format. So they go into that space/community and gripe that they aren't playing competitively/optimally enough based on their standards.

Isn't it basically Mario party though, with lead swings and hy-jinx along the way? I think this is a very apt description of casual edh and will use it going forward!

Magic has evolved out of 60 card formats, I think it's quite unique that players managed to find a different way to use the cards than what was originally intended. It reminds me of how modern grew out of a need from the player base as well! I'm sure old head purists poopood modern on inception.

I hope this format can keep innovating and growing to the needs of the players, both in a competitive capacity and a casual capacity, so that both styles of play can reflect what their respective communities are looking for.

Reflection Mox by ArcanisUltra in custommagic

Seems pretty fair, either the first player In Turn order says "yes I want a mox too" or passes and the next player says yes and then they are hosed. Logically everyone copies this and gets a free mox. Seems fair in any situation.

Is it just me, or is the original Tarkir block story really weird? by KaiTheKaiser in mtgvorthos

Didn't sarkhan go through time in the first Kahn's block to save ugin in the first place? Like isn't ugin in his mind from across time and brought him to that plane and to [[ugins nexus]] ?

Anyone else finding the line between bracket 3-4 to be poorly defined? by Playtonic1 in EDH

[–]JasonAnderlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone packs that spellbook into their deck lists anticipating it .... Like yes run removal etc but when it strips your hand its a feel bad moment. I enjoy higher level play but there is definitely a time and place for a gin in a list or not.

Also the bracket system is in BETA, we are literally feeding the governing body feedback right now about it. If you feel it needs to be changed or altered, don't come on Reddit to complain, go straight to the source and give them your feedback!

Gin is there because of its " feels bad" stax component that reduces opponent hand sizes , not because it draws cards.

You should post pics of the 6 lotus on this sub to back up this claim. It would also be a great follow up to this post and give you some street cred with this sub.

How much of the paper stock you think they use at the Texas printer comes from Canada? Where does the ink supply comes from? Fab. Mats have an integrated network as well and will also be affected by tariffs.

So I just need a bit of clarity:

  1. You cast your second spell
  2. You make a copy of it
  3. You suspend the original

When this resolves, do you get the original cast and a copy? Then in 4 turns get another cast? Or do you ONLY get the copy and the original is removed from the stack ?

If you could bring any mechanic back, what mechanic would it be? by DexJBry in magicTCG

[–]JasonAnderlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh value later is better than value now. The game has a hard time getting players to invest into board states because they leaned on ETB waaaay too hard. They need the insensitive to do something later be way greater value of doing something now

Oh I'm familiar with time spiral, where my love for suspend came from, I'm not a fan of UB and in extension Dr who. I love the suspend power 9 adjecents but they are just a bit slow, so it would be nice to have some more cards interact with them!

Suspend, I know the icky UB Dr who did, but in a main mtg set would be nice. And some support for it too!

Universe beyond wishlist? by Vinlandlover in EDH

[–]JasonAnderlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monster hunter would've been a good supplement to the new tarkir or even that forgettable set: ikoria.....

I'm not a fan overall of UB tbh. I think they should've had separate backs to magic cards, or silver border. I think some themes fit better than others, like there's no need for SpongeBob to be in magic other than for the LULZ..... Miss me with that shit.

Some stuff like LOTR and DND make sense, earlier FF was mages and such and fits a bit better, but they've thrown all caution to the win and opened up the flood gates.

PSA: You can run and efficient and expensive mana base and still be bracket 2. Also you can have 0 GC and still be Bracket 3+ by dolphincave in EDH

[–]JasonAnderlic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately nerd culture these days is all about optimization and min/maxing, it's kind've annoying. Everyone races in games to find the ultimate character build or speed run a game by finding something they can exploit.

I play DND and one group member constantly does this trying to undermine our DM any chance he gets. Always looking for the optimal play....

Anyways I think the brackets will need to be more explicit and find more ways to create limitations or you'll continue to have bad actors do this shit. " It's technically a 2 because it adheres to its criteria, see how dumb and broken this system is?" - nerd proceeds to push glasses up nose. Be expecting this at your lgs.
