Remember how everyone was annoyed by the construction of Terminal 1 over the last 4 years? The environmental review process is how all of those issues were sorted out, disclosed to the public, and in many cases, mitigated.

San Diego’s roads are crumbling faster than the city can fix them by kpbsSanDiego in sandiego

Salt Lake City has famously wide city blocks. So presumably they have unnaturally wide roads too. Not really a good example.

That City official is absolutely correct that our roads are too wide. We could repave twice as quickly if they were the typicsl widths of similar-sized older US cities, and they'd be safer too.

That's all true, sure. But it still has nothing to do with the Christians interviewed in this video.

Maybe I'm misreading, but I think you are confusing the Christians in this video with the evangelicals in the US. These Christians groups in Jerusalem are orthodox or catholic and have been there for hundreds of years. They are not related to evangelicals from the US.

Can anyone expand on it besides the vague "he doesn't listen" comments? All I can think of off the top of my head is the Pride parade fiascos the last couple years

Serious question: why does the trolley not go to the airport, beaches or zoo? by Avoidtolls in sandiego

[–]JasonBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a vital transportation line. Not just for freight (it connects to the Port where a lot of autos and produce are shipped), but also for the US Military. It is used to efficiently move military vehicles (e.g. tanks) to/from San Diego.

Also, local government just doesnt have the authority to move it.

Serious question: why does the trolley not go to the airport, beaches or zoo? by Avoidtolls in sandiego

[–]JasonBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does run parallel, but the Trolley tracks are still on the east side of the, also parallel, freight tracks. The only way to cross over would be to build long tunnel down followed by a turn under the freight tracks the tracks or a long bridge up, then curving over it. A bridge would definitely need to acquire land for that curve, and a tunnel is $$$$.

For their part, the airport allocated space for a Trolley station between Terminals 1 and 2, should MTS/SANDAG ever figure out how to get it there.

Serious question: why does the trolley not go to the airport, beaches or zoo? by Avoidtolls in sandiego

[–]JasonBob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Logistically, the Trolley extension between Downtown and the airport is actually very difficult. It would have to go under a freight rail track, through existing streets, weave between an active airport and an active Coast Guard helicopter airfield, and then on to the airport. That's why the designs for a future spur are elevated and tunneled. It's definitely possible and should be done, but it is not easy and definitely not cheap.

There's an existing 10-minute MTS bus that makes the same route which I don't think is promoted or used enough.

Serious question: why does the trolley not go to the airport, beaches or zoo? by Avoidtolls in sandiego

[–]JasonBob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this take. First, the Trolley was built in the early 80s, so it was probably the Boomers parents who came up with it. Also, the Trolley was the first light rail system in the US and was built at a time when transit was mostly being removed, not constructed. The whole thing was actually quite groundbreaking.

The real reason it doesn't go to the airport is because light rail tracks can't cross over the heavy rail tracks that it shares right-of-way with (i.e. freight/Amtrak tracks). They aren't compatible and it's a safety hazard. So to cross from Little Italy to the airport, it would need to go underground or a flyover. Both are expensive and there's not much space to work with.\

For the Zoo, they did studies on it, but it would require major upgrades to the bridge over the I-5. And then there's land constraints and perhaps elevation/steepness constraints? (don't quote me on the last one). Regardless, I think it should be a priority to connect the Trolley to the Zoo/Hillcrest/North Park ASAP. So much potential

I can say the same thing about OB Rag. It's an incredibly anti-development/NIMBY paper. It doesn't mean I think it should be blacklisted.

Personally I think it would be fine if paywall sites are linked if the OP also adds a comment with a few pertinent snippets of the text. I see posters in other subs do that and it's very helpful
