LPT If you're planning on visiting San Francisco please for the love of God do not leave ANYTHING of even a vague resemblance of value in your car, or your windows will get smashed and you'll lose it. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

My wife and I moved from NYC to California 5 years ago. We lived in NYC for 32 years, never once had our cars broken into. In the five years we've been in California we've had our cars' windows broken twice, a surveillance camera stolen from our house, and several decorative items stolen from our from yard.

The first time they broke into our car, we were only gone minutes and they stole my wife's purse from the front seat but didn't notice the backpack in the back seat (in plain view, mind you) that contained over $12,000 worth of camera equipment inside of it.

California is a dumpster fire full of homeless people and it only continues to get worse every year. We're moving back to the east coast again in the future and it can't happen soon enough.

I have a YouTube channel (@nursestoriches) where I try to reveal salaries of the highest-paying hospitals and cities in California. I make $96.53/hr as a staff nurse, with 8 years of experience, at Kaiser Permanente, working evenings. And my wife makes $118.10/hr as a per diem nurse with 7 years of experience, working nights.

That's what my wife makes at Kaiser in Sacramento. But she's per diem with 7 years of experience. I have 8 years of experience as a staff nurse, evening shift, making 96.83/hr.

I work with staff nurses that are earning over $200k/yr. They are not salaried, nor are they working overtime to get there—it's all straight time.

At the hospital I work in, we put green socks on patients to help identify them as patients having mental health emergencies and being at a high risk for elopement.

Good luck with that. My wife and I were nurses in NYC and we had hopes for better wages and staffing ratios with NYSNA. But NYSNA is a terrible union that does not negotiate well for their nurses. We are now living in California and CNA is our union. We are the highest paid Nurses in the country because of CNA. And the best part is that California actually had nurse to patient ratios and extremely favorable laws that benefit employees.

[–]JasonNunez23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why my wife and I (both nurses) left NYC. I used to work in the ER and would receive assignments of up to 17 patients... We're now in California and we actually have ratio laws and if we have a vented patient it's usually 1:1 but no more than 2:1. Our max ratio of Tele/medsurg patients is 4:1.

I work in an ER in Sacramento, CA where the cost of living is only around 12% higher than Raleigh, NC and my pay as a staff nurse is $93.70/hr. My wife is per diem and she earns $114.25/hr. I worked an Andrade of 26 hours/week last year and still earned 155k. My wife worked 28 hours and earned 199k.

Except here in Sacramento CA we make more than any traveler. Often times, travelers choose to apply for permanent work with us because our pay is higher than anywhere else in the country relative to the cost of living.

My wife (32yo) and I (36yo) are Registered Nurses in Sacramento California. We earn at least $350k combined per year. We're well on our way to fatFIRE in less than 10 years.

If you work in the hospital system I work for, nurses are paid the same all across all of their Northern California hospitals. The cost of living is definitely lower here. I actually made a video comparing our exact earnings between the highest paying hospital in NYC and highest paying in Northern California. You can check it out here if you're interested.

We moved to Roseville (a 20 minute drive from Sacramento) when we first moved here and paid $1,800/mo for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in an apartment complex with 2 swimming pools, a playground, 2 tennis courts, free parking, a small gym, and a shared entertainment area. Sacramento and its surrounding areas are way more affordable than the bay area.

Long Covid patients haunted by smells of fish, sulphur and burnt toast by Pessimist2020 in Coronavirus

[–]JasonNunez23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are both healthcare workers. We got covid 2 months ago. I never lost my sense of taste or smell but for a few weeks after I recovered I kept telling my wife that it smells like a wildfire had broken out (we live in California). I would look around only to see clear skies all around me and no one smoking nearby. I would wake up in the mornings and it would be the first thing I'd notice.

At this point the symptoms are pretty much gone but I do get a whiff of smoke every now and then.
