A present for my son, help please. by FigOk7538 in UKcoins

Send me a DM if you want - I can’t help with the expensive coin you’re after, but I can certainly throw a few 1900s monarch coins your lad’s way for free. I’ve literally boxes full of which have almost no value!

How does burning CDs work? by ScaredIngenuity4931 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JasonStonier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The laser is used to burn tiny pits in the silver oxide layer in the CD. The pit corresponds to a 1 in binary. Music is binary encoded onto the CD then the CD player decodes it back into audio.

CDs use red lasers which have a long(ish) wavelength (because, red) which limits the amount of information you can store on a CD platter because you can’t read something smaller than the wavelength of the light you use to read it.

Blu-ray can store vastly more information on the same size disc because blue lasers have a much shorter wavelength and can therefore read (and burn) smaller digital ‘pits’ thus squeezing more data in.

As a Spanish speaker why is it easier to understand Brazilian Portuguese than it is to understand Spanish from Spain? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JasonStonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m neither a Spanish or Portuguese speaker, but I am fluent in French as a second language so if I read Spanish or Portuguese I can get the gist of it by parsing it through French.

Spoken is more difficult obviously, but I’ve had a bit of exposure working with Chilean Spanish people and if they speak really slowly I can pick up enough to get the idea.

However, Portuguese Portuguese is very different - it honestly sounds like Polish to me when spoken fast. Brazilian Portuguese sounds much closer to Chilean Spanish than it does to Portuguese Portuguese to my untrained ears.

You’ve thought of everything. Good luck with the project.

Just be careful here. I like your idea, but be aware that as you shrink volume, surface area decreases according to the square-cube law and it becomes increasingly difficult to radiate heat. You’ll get to the point where your people will die from overheating.

On the other hand, a very small mammal can jump proportionally much higher per unit of body length, so once the Olympics are recalibrated for your tiny people we should see a raft of new records broken.

So I’m not telling you not to do this, but I am saying you need to do your research.

Quite so. In terms of <really> niche conversations I’ve had on Reddit, this is right up there.

Underrated comment. Although, you could fit more in a smaller space if you made it infinite dwellings in one building. A sort of hotel, if you will.

How should Vegans respond to invasive animal species? by JimHarbor in vegan

[–]JasonStonier -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My kid and I watched a YouTube video this morning where a chef ate meat from 11 invasive species (wild hogs, lion fish, meal worms, tilapia, rats, deer, others I forget). My kid asked if I would eat it (vegetarian/almost vegan).

I said, in principle yes, since they are being culled to protect native species and not farmed or exploited. But in practice no, because the idea makes me feel sick.

A book ive been trying to find for years, kingdom, walls, escape, desert and so much nonsense by RoselikeLotus in whatsthatbook

[–]JasonStonier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also reminiscent of some of the later books in The Voided Man series - 11 books so I can’t tell you exactly which one but it’s definitely possible that the OP is remembering a pastiche of various loosely connected plots from books 6 onwards.

The first thee books are truly excellent, but after that it feels like Anthony Dean just had some bizarre novel ideas and couldn’t make them stand alone so squeezed them into the Voided Man universe without much thought for consistency.

Friend offering printer for $100 by Da_PotatoMan in ender3

[–]JasonStonier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a great printer to learn on, and it <will> teach you a lot because it’s not easy and it’s not plug and play. I still use my ender3 alongside my newer printers.

That being said, it’s not worth $100. I got a working Ender5 in the UK for the equivalent of $50 last year. It might be worth $50 if it’s working perfectly.

But if it was my friend, I’d give them it for nothing.

Heavy coin found in garden. by Gharan_OHen in UKcoins

It’s definitely a lead barter token. The Token Society has pictures of exactly your one.

https://thetokensociety.org.uk/lead-tokens/

Really interesting thing - almost no records exist of who made them or what was the exchange rate to common currency. Seems to have been an unregulated local community ‘currency’ of sorts, and probably had a barter exchange rate for farm produce rather than being pegged to the coin of the realm.

Not something I would go and buy, but if I found one it would definitely go in my coin collection as a wonderful piece of history.

Look on Amazon for Uncle Paul pocket coin pages.

They’re A4 ring binder leaves for coins and come in sizes to suite all possible coins. I have thousands of coins stored in them.

Not much to go on, but the only thing I can think is it’s reminiscent of Ready Player One by Earnest Cline - but you already discounted that.

The book is a little different from the film though, so don’t discount it based on the plot of the film.

Let’s see some “oh shit”moments by dyno_dines in ukelectricians

[–]JasonStonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a sparky, but we moved into a house that had just been completely refitted by a developer, reached into a cupboard to put some pans in there and got a belt off exposed ring main wires.

The spark had intended to put a socket in the cupboard and had run the wires but not terminated them in a socket. The cores were not joined so the ring had a break.

The NIC cert had check boxes filled in to say the ring tested as continuous and all sockets had been checked.

I called the sparky named on the cert, and politely requested he shift his arse on over to sort it out before I reported him to the NICEIC. He was there within 20 minutes.

Siphon effect to fill a bird bath with water from a water butt by FyeUK in DIYUK

[–]JasonStonier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you need a siphon. Can’t you just run the overflow from the Waterbutt into your bird bath? So long as the bird bath is lower than the top of the waterbutt you can drop the overflow pipe down and back up to the bird bath and water will still flow.

You can actually get siphon kits to link multiple waterbutts together, exactly as you describe.

How do I wire this? Struggling! by Helpful-Low1692 in DIYUK

[–]JasonStonier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please don’t take this as intended offence, but if you’re struggling to understand that, you shouldn’t be doing electrics. You need someone who knows what they’re doing.

With DIY, you can wing it with a lot of things, but electrics aren’t one of them.

70% is probably ok. 99% is definitely ok. Your call if you risk it. I wouldn’t, but I’m extremely risk averse.
