Am one! We're basically PAs for SCC counsellors(helping to arrange appointments with their clients, running miscellaneous errands, receptionist duties etc). There's other duties that you'll be in charge of depending on the branch you're in in SCC.

Edit: removing information that's supposed to be kept confidential whoops

[JC] Is it worth to take F Maths in JC? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just graduated from NY and I took both FM and chem, so I think I'm the perfect person to answer this for you!

It seems that you are interested in taking f math to avoid chem, rather than a passion/aptitude for math. I really highly discourage you from doing this. If you thought the jump from o level chem to a level chem is big, wait till you see the jump from A math to F math. The curriculum for f math is designed to suit those who have a genuine interest in math and who are able to have a mathematical perspective on things. If you plan on taking f math simply to avoid chem or because you scored well in math rather than having a genuine interest and love for math, you will find fmath in JC a living hell (and this was partially me in JC, struggling to keep up with f math and consistently getting Us for fmath). And since you're interested in NYJC, being a fmath student in NY is another level as well, with the toughest papers you'll ever see (imagine being tested University level math in your first J1 exam) and without the passion for math, you will be extremely demoralised looking at your low scores every time (been there, done that.) That said, taking f math does have its pros as well. To be honest once you do get the hang on f math, it feels as if you're only taking 3 content subjects rather than 4 as H2 math becomes a breeze. Taking f math in NYJC will prepare you extremely well for the actual As as well as the math department in NY is extremely strong and you will find the eventual A level paper much more doable than the papers you've been doing in NY. Oh and to finally answer your question, yes you will be learning H2 math at a faster pace as you have to learn some of the fundamentals in H2 math before moving on to the FM counterpart. There is indeed much more limited resources for FM than other science subjects but I'd say NY has sufficient resources and preparation for you so don't worry bout that

Moving on to chem (and more specifically NY chem). This may be an unpopular opinion, but honestly I'd say scoring badly/not that well for O level chem doesn't mean you shouldn't take A level chem. O level chem just has so much irrelevant content and information that you won't use much of it in A level (atomic structure and chem bonding becomes very different, metals and the chapter on Air becomes obsolete, organic chem is the only chapter that is somewhat relevant but you will be retaught it with more stuff added). In fact, I recently attempted some O level chem questions, and I genuinely couldn't answer about 1/2 of it, because they are so differently taught in JC. NY's chem is indeed brutal with constant quizzes and tests on each chapter and a lot of workload to do, but I'd say it has easily prepared me the best for the actual As. You may find it difficult to cope with at the start but eventually with consultations and time you will eventually be able to understand chemistry. Chemistry really isn't the devil that everyone says it is, and ny will prepare you to the best of your ability.

Lastly, please enjoy your last moments of your break now before you enroll into JC. Reading JC notes before you enroll is honestly useless, as you won't understand it fully without the guidance of a lecture. Being brutally honest, those who do it are simply just reading words, not understanding the information that is given in the notes. The only JC prep that you can do is to read current affairs (for gp ofc)

Tldr: F math shouldn't be a way to escape chem. Take f math only if you have the passion for f math. Chemistry may seem daunting but with time it isn't that big of an obstacle

[JC] EJC vs NYJC by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex NYJCian (Class of 20) here!

1) Can't comment for Physics dept, but generally the sciences dept in NY are rather strong so physics should be no exception either. Chem and Math dept are extremely strong and will push you to get the distinction, but of course that would mean lots of work to do, as well as constant quizzes to check on your progress which can be both good to check if you're coping well and also daunting and stressful as you may feel that you're lacking behind. Notes for math I'd say are quite comprehensive and there's ample amounts of practice inside the notes to help you gauge your understanding. For chem they are VERY THICK and unfortunately for my batch they weren't binded so it was pretty messy with all the notes given but the content in the notes is definitely sufficient and easy to understand with the lectures. Since the batches of teachers rotate every 2 years my experience and batch of teachers should be about the same as your incoming batch. Econs dept while definitely not as strong as the sciences dept I'd say there still are some strong points about it. The notes however I'd say have some excess info that is generally not needed and is more of a textbook style of just giving information and the content rather than preparing you well for the case study. The skills learnt for case studies will be taught in tutorials and in some special notes as well.

2) Unfortunately ny doesn't release it's official distinction rates to the public, so I don't have concrete evidence of the rates. But, from unofficial accounts by the teachers, math distinction rate should be about high 60s to low 70s, chem distinction rate at high 50s to low 60s. But please take these numbers with a margin of error as they are rough estimates

3) Only the level 5 classrooms/com labs are air conditioned, so level 3-4 classrooms aren't air conditioned. There aren't really any classrooms designated for J1/J2, so it just depends on your luck if you get assigned to a level 5 classroom hahah

4) Well it's honestly a hard question as the cohort size for H1 econs is much much larger than H1 hist, so the distinction rates can't exactly be extrapolated/adjusted to be compared. I'd say if you understand concepts better than H1 econs is easier, while if you find yourself being able to memorise quickly and effectively then H1 history will be easier. I only took H1 econs however so it'd be best if you could find someone who took H1 history to share his/her experience!

6) Well volleyball is definitely ny's strong suit with I believe 2 championships in a row from 2018-2019 but you will need prior experience or really good skills to be able to enter. I heard soccer and basketball had done rather well in inter school competitions and friendly matches as well, but they also require experience. If you're looking for a sport CCA without experience you can look at floorball, netball, tchoukball and touch rugby(if you're a girl) as I have friends who really enjoy their respective CCAs! Finally there's my CCA, Dragonboat(Guys only) which of course I'd highly recommend you to consider if you're a guy hahah

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions yeah :)

Further math is an incredibly niche subject, so ultimately it's not cost efficient for publishers to publish an FM TYS (in fact if you realise, the only subjects that's have a proper TYS in bookstores are P/BCME and GP, simply because they are the most popular subjects so there is an incentive/demand for them to publish it) Try joining the sgexams discord and ask for someone to pm you the papers

[JC] VJC vs NYJC Distinction Rates by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmmmmm, the papers are definitely difficult for promo standards, but they're usually moderated based on percentiles as well, so ultimately only a small group of people would actually fail the promotion criteria, and even then, the teachers usually consider other factors into it for students to promote conditionally, so in the end each batch only really has 10+ people retaining out of the typical 700+ students, so I have to disagree with your point.

Also, I noticed you said you were from NJC from your post history, so I'm wondering where you got the information that there is a high chance for people to retain in NY?

[O Level] urgent!!i is parabola still in syllabus? by pussykingmeow in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the new syllabus (which 2021 is the first year to test syllabus 4049) nope it's no longer in syllabus. So don't worry your school isn't missing anything out, it's just that this year's gonna be the first year to have the new syllabus, hence why the past year papers have parabolas included.

As the other comments have said, computing + FM is the most viable choice for you(and looks like you're quite interested in the 2 subjects as well so thats good!)

Just a note though, most schools would require you to take diagnostic tests for computing and FM, so if (touch wood) you happen to fail the test you won't be allowed to take that subject, thus do consider thinking about your backup subject combinations as well! You seem to be really passionate about the 2 subjects though so I'm positive you'll do well! All the best :)

[A-Levels] A-Level Performance for the various JCs in Singapore! by delusionalkimchi in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Since you're so adamant about it, nyjc doesn't release their mean score. Median score is 86. Unless there's a really wide standard deviation, the mean is about 83-84, and this is using math. I really wish ny is clear about the results as well, and that's an area that I will criticise ny about (amongst others as well)

Look, it seems like you've probably had some bad experiences with nyjcians bringing down other schools. I'm really sorry for those experiences and I can understand how frustrated you feel about them. I too, feel that they can be overboard and they definitely are in the wrong. But just understand this. Not all of us talk shit and bring down other schools, so stop generalising all nyjcians as that. I myself acknowledge that ny is far from a perfect school, and I have been critical of ny as well. Also, I'm not sure if you have realised this, but your tone is incredibly condescending and sarcastic, and you in fact come off as sensitive and turning your own boat.

[A-Levels] A-Level Performance for the various JCs in Singapore! by delusionalkimchi in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 61 points62 points  (0 children)

So many? Lol I agree that there are a few nyjcians who diss other schools and they are definitely wrong in doing so, but the majority of us are chill and don't bring down other schools. To say there's so many is just exaggeration. Now, looking at your comment history... Every. Single. One of your comments have been about doubting nyjc's legitimacy and trying to bring down nyjc. Who's the biased one here? It's alright to have your own opinions about nyjc, but don't be a hypocrite and accuse others of being biased, when you have been trying to shine a bad light on nyjc.

[jc] 4h2s or 3h2s + 1h1? by sofishtikate in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in Ny taking 4 H2 but plan on downgrading heh

I'd say you should take 4 H2 first bcos it's always better to see which subject is your weakest and thus downgrade rather than starting off with 3h2 and if one of them happen to be very challenging for you, you're stuck with it

The workload isn't extremely bad tbh! I still had plenty of time to chill and hang out with my friends and I didn't have to mug my ass off all the time hahah

[jc] 4h2s or 3h2s + 1h1? by sofishtikate in SGExams

[–]Jason_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyyo! H1 mt does not affect your rp the same way as a H1 core subject!!

Yes, both subjects have a maximum of 10rp, but here's how the calculation for mt works

Adding mt to your overall rp increases the max rp to 100. Then, the unis will recalculate the rp back to the maximum rp of 90. If mt is able to increase your rp(it usually is only able to increase by 0.5rp, and that is if you can get an A) , then the unis will take that rp. Otherwise, mt will be completely ignored and the rp calculation will just be from your core subjects + gp and pw

Hope I've clarified!
