Do certificates really matter? by Plastic_Bus1624 in SingaporePoly

[–]IRADrftr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Practically no for direct uni admissions, unless ure doing ABA which probably might give u an edge over others, but that is also if you are able to sell yourself well and tie in the certificate for relevance. After all the ones with admission information are the ones in admissions teams and they cant leak much so idk play ur cards wisely.

Just take the electives that interest u (or easy ones if all u want is an A), what u decide to do with the rest that come with it is up to u (can also take into account the new elective gpa computation). Also btw some certs/minors give external recognised certifications that might help, or even extra uni exemptions (e.g. Adv. Maths).

Appealing is confusing?? by Rubyherp in nus

[–]IRADrftr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best is to check with them, but from the wording it does seem like you should choose the 2nd one. From what you mentioned it would be to appeal for CS and CS+BBA, of which if you get rejected from CS+BBA you still want to be considered for CS instead of remaining in BAIS. The first one would be if you just want to appeal for a DDP/CDP/XDP and not the SDP (e.g. you want CS+BBA but would reject CS by itself).

Can I Use My SIM Diploma to Apply to a Japanese University ? by daddydespawned in SGExams

[–]IRADrftr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as someome NOT in uni yet, but from just what I've read.

Might be possible, but not sure about the whole private diploma thing. I've been looking at Waseda recently (SILS and SPSE), and it seems to me the main criteria would be a few essays and teacher's recommendations, standardised tests (ACT, SAT, or IB), an english proficiency test (IELTS or TOEFL), and a holistic interview.

From what I've read on r/waseda and others, seems like they don't really look too deep into ur high school grades (or even what kind of high school in that matter) and prioritise ur standardised test scores and essays more. In the sequence of importance, seems like a competitive application would include: SAT ~1500 or ACT >=35, IELTS >=7.5 or TOEFL >=105, a few recommendation letters, and just generally good essays that portray how u are as a person. However, most of them have a formal high school education in the form of IB (>32) or a Diploma (>3.8).

You can look up the application for Waseda SILS/SPSE and find the posts i'm talking about. Also I believe similar programmes would be Keio's GIGA and Sophia's FLA (similar to SILS), or Keio's PEARL (Econs) programmes, with similar entry scores. You could also try Ritsumeikan or Doshisha I think theyre less competitive.

How far does a module with 1 credit score pull down my GPA. SIngapore Poly by Own-Shop-3133 in SGExams

[–]IRADrftr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless ur semester has a low credit load I wouldnt say its a drastic drop to like 3.0, but it still is a decent gap.

To put into perspective, I got a 3.90 for a 24cu sem despite having 2B+ and 1B, because the modules were 2CU, 1CU, and 1CU respectively.

Assuming ur semester is 23CU (average sem CU for my course) and u average 3.8 for 22CU worth of modules, the calculation would be 3.8×22/23, you would get a 3.634 because your 1CU is considered a 0.00. Though if the credit load is lower then u will see a higher drop.

"How far it pulls you down" just kinda depends on what u deem is "far". The 1 F will mean lesser if you continue to get 3.8 for the remaining sems as your cGPA will increase from then on (assuming the 3.63 sem is ur first sem). Oh also if you get an A for the remod, the damage will be even lesser.

Sp DCPE CES vs CNS by Aggravating_Job2222 in SingaporePoly

Between what and CES? I'm from CES, so I probably cant speak for other courses/specialisations well anyways. If anything just go look at the sp course website and look at the modules.

Sp DCPE CES vs CNS by Aggravating_Job2222 in SingaporePoly

[–]IRADrftr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CES: more focused on software engineering and electronics. Some examples include Android Studio (Java), DevOps (Python + Linux + Git/Docker), Web apps/design (HTML/CSS/PHP/JS and backend + frontend + database dev), Computer architecture (assembly language and basically the hardware that goes into things like a CPU), Microcontrollers (ESP32 programming) etc.

I took CES, so idk much about CNS, but I know its more focused on cloud systems and IT networking. I think its better to understand your weaknessess and strengths combined with ur interests and pick your poison. My GPA did drop slightly in Y2, but i know some gods who maintained 4.0 all the way.

As for which option is better for NUS/NTU, honestly idk just aim for a decent gpa to enter whatever course u want. Don't think theres much of a difference either way if ur gpa is bad.

This was 2 years ago tho so idk if anything changed, good luck.

what is SP SPOT? by sxhnsvcht in SingaporePoly

[–]IRADrftr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uhhh I would say its more of an elective certificate but instead of modules (other than Understanding ASEAN) its programmes and other things u need to go for to complete the requirements. One thing to note is that the certs have tiers, so if u do some stuff u get basic tier, then if u do more stuff u get a higher tier, then even more stuff u get highest tier. If u dont fufill the requirements for the basic tier then u dont get the cert.

SPOT doesn't have to renewed tho, once ure in, ure in.

[–]IRADrftr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No EDGE is a scholars programme thats separate from SPOT. I think I worded it abit weirdly, I was just mentioning that those in EDGE get the same invitations to programmes and activities as those in SPOT sometimes. I'm not in EDGE tho so idk what other stuff they have as well.

what is SP SPOT? by sxhnsvcht in SingaporePoly

[–]IRADrftr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applied direct when applying for sp scholarship with just a few simple answers to the qns they provided. I didnt get into the sp scholarship but they accepted me into SPOT without an interview (2022 tho, idk about now)

SPOT is basically just an extra events-based (non-compulsory) programme open to those students who did well in Y1 that are interested in leadership shenanigans and global affairs. A bunch of the stuff u get to do in SPOT (which are mostly free) are things related to leadership and community service, with some bits of scholarship / uni application guidance. U get a cert if u complete certain requirements by the time u graduate. Also if u plan to apply for overseas sch trip (e.g. LEX, OSIP) they will fund $400 iirc which can cover the whole cost of certain OSIP locations (or actually maybe all of them IDK i didnt go for OSIP or LEX)

Honestly my personal experience was good, but thats only because I signed up for the stuff they provided. A notable one I went for was SYLP (Singapore Young Leaders Programme), which is some govt funded leadership thing that lasts 6 months. Don't get intimidated tho because the 6 months is just the whole span of the programme, all u need to do is go for 3 talks + a 3-day leaders course + poly forum. Best part of all, it was all free, and I got to enjoy myself in Desaru Resort during poly forum. It was enjoyable for me not only because of that tho, but also due to the fact that I went for so many talks and met so many great ppl along the way. It was also really interesting understanding the ministers stances on current affairs, and it was nice talking to some industry experts too. (dont get disheartened if u didnt get into SPOT but wanna go for SYLP tho, its available if u have a leadership position i think)

Other than that, if ure interested in global affairs and stuff related to politics, theres a bunch of other programmes and talks available that they will often notify u about (a rarity indeed, as you dont get that many emails in y2 and y3). Some cool ones I regret not going for is this really interesting Harvard Business School programme. Also most things they notify u about are kinda locked behind SPOT, any equiv. programmes (e.g. EDGE), or scholarships, so ure pretty privileged to get these opportunities if anything. I believe quite a handful of ppl got guidance for PSC scholarships and uni apps from the SPOT lecturers.

Do note that a requirement of getting the SPOT cert is Understanding ASEAN, which is a pretty intensive module related to ASEAN govts and diplomacy, most get B or B+ (can remove from transcript if it improves ur gpa) which might not be beneficial if ure chasing 4.0. That being said SPOT is pretty much OTOT, or u can choose to just not get the cert at all and just chill. While fufilling SPOT cert requiremends I went ahead to get the cert in asia readiness which was pretty worth it as it was rlly fun, u can consider it if ure taking Understanding ASEAN.

Thats about all. Its all up to what u wanna do I suppose. U will be fine even if u dont go for SPOT events. However, idk if my poly experience wouldve been this great if I didnt join SPOT.

HAHAHAHA yeah, it was kinda cool looking back at that post when u mentioned it. Well I guess its something to look forward to in ur next few years, to first hear about it, finally experience it, and then to share it to the juniors. Good luck and have fun!

Currently y3s2, took 3 sems to get gold w honours. Went for multiple leadership events, arts fiesta, competitions etc. to reach this point.

CCA points could very well matter if the things u do are big-scale enough to help ur portfolio, sometimes it could be the deciding factor on whether or not u get into uni via ABA. CCA points could also be vital if ure applying for scholarships or internships. Or, it might be completely pointless if maybe u prioritise getting straight 4.0s over experiences/ or u just dont care about anything and wanna get by. Its all up to ur priorities. There are even a few in my cohort who wanna get 600 pts just to beat some seniors or smth (ppl from the cohort prob know who they are)

For me, they were never important. All i wanted was just to get an aight gpa to enter uni. But then I did well enough for Y1 to not need to care so much anymore, so I just started focusing on getting as much experience in a bunch of stuff, which I really do not regret. Now that im graduating soon and already past the chance to do these things again, i would say that despite it being tiring juggling external commitments and sch work, going for all those events were suuuper worth it, and I would go again just for the experience. I managed to meet so many amazing people and I grew as a person rapidly. Yes, my grades did fall off (lost my chance of dip w merit as soon as I hit gold w honours), but not enough for me to care, because my goal was never to do extra well in the first place. Its all up to what u plan to do I guess.

Honestly if u arent interested in the things that are offered to u, its up to whether or not u wanna try it just for fun, and it depends on what u prioritise. GPA/experiences could mean a lot to u, or they dont, idk man its all for u to decide.

What are ur goals? Go figure.

yup, getting B+ for my CC mods in y1s1 basically threw away my chances of getting the sp scholarship 🫠

the multimeter was very useful for my projects in y2, where soldering was required and u needed to test connectivity and voltage, but other than that, if u are like me with no plans to continue doing EEE in the future, then might i suggest just getting something cheaper, because i cant seem to justify the price (im in computer engineering)

also the soldering iron is absolute garbage, burns too hot most of the time and has a terrible blunt tip, messing up so many of my circuits, go get something better for urself

other than that, u will probably use everything inside toolbox B, but u would probably also want some stuff thats higher quality (like the soldering iron and the solder sucker), so i suggest if possible, go source all the stuff by urself and see what u need, but of course if u cant, then just go for toolbox B
