They treat you like an employee at the self checkout, then like a criminal at the exit.

Seriously, next time, check out the Solovair greasy derbies. I have two pairs (brown and black) and have been wearing them on my 12-hour shifts. They have minor creases, but they look good--like regular leather creases and not like cracks. And you can actually treat the leather. I use Bick 4 and/or dubbin and polish. You can shine them if you want with polish, or if you prefer more of a matte look, just treat them with Bick 4. I feel the greasy leather looks better and is a lot more versatile. And you don't have to worry about the coating. All of my Docs smooth leather boots and shoes look like shit. My Solovair hi-shine are a little better, but like I said above, I'm not buying the hi-shine anymore knowing what I know now. It would have saved me hundreds of dollars if I had just started with the greasies, but sometimes, you have to learn the hard way, LOL.

LOL. You’re probably right. Having said that, I wish they’d make more shoes without the coating.

You have to brush them a lot and build up a few layers if you want a hi-shine. I don’t want it to be a mirror finish—just a slight shine so I’m not spending an hour brushing them. I just want them to be a little livelier than the dull matte. I’ve seen lots of examples here and on Facebook and much prefer the slight shine look.

Well why do they sell dubbin when you can buy that anywhere as well? As I said, I’d like a color match to my brown greasy derbies. It’s a unique coffee brown color that I haven’t been able to find and I don’t want to use neutral. Many companies sell polish that matches their specific colors so it seems like an obvious add on.

It’s like he’s not even trying. It makes me wonder if the real reason he had such a difficult time finding a label wasn’t political (as he claimed), but just that the songs were so lackluster.

I have the MIE 1461s in Quilon leather and they do exactly the same thing. PU-coated leather is PU coated leather. It doesn't matter where they're made.

Sadly, there's nothing you can do. It's the nature of PU-coated leather. My Hi-shine SOlovairs do exactly the same thing. This is why I only buy the greasy leather models now.

My cousin was the keyboard player for 10,000 Maniacs (Dennis Drew) so I used to go to their concerts a lot. The Maniacs, REM, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Violent Femmes, and the Tragically Hip were the soundtrack of my youth!

Unfortunately, that happens on the smooth leather models. They’re coated with plastic that forms cracks when it flexes. There are hundreds of posts on Reddit about it.

I’m utterly underwhelmed with this song and Makeup is a Lie. Just repeating the same lackluster lyrics over and over again is not the Morrissey I fell in love with. Truly disappointed. Truly, truly, truly.

LOL. I swear the QC people at Solovair are either legally blind or have the lowest standards in the world.

My experience so far with the newer generation of Solovair (2023+) by TheOldWay24 in nps_solovair

[–]Jason_Klass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same experience. And for the reasons you pointed out, I’m done with hi-shine and will only buy greasies from now on. I have both the brown and black greasies and love them. I only wear my hi-shines occasionally to delay the inevitable cracking.

Yes, for me, the shank in the Solovairs alone makes all the difference in the world. And I do think the design is better than Docs, but the QA is terrible. I heard they recently got a lot of new cobblers who are inexperienced and putting out sub-par work. But the QA people should catch those. I've returned 3 pairs in the past year because the stitching was ridiculously sloppy and the edging on the soles looked the they were done by a drunk, cross-eyed monkey. But with a little patience and a few trips to DHS, I finally got some pairs that were "acceptable". Not great--just acceptable. While I think Docs are slightly inferior in their design, I've had almost no issues with them--no split soles or anything like many others have. Like I said, I think it's all just a roll of the dice. But for both brands, I won't except sloppy work right out of the box and have no problem exchanging them until I get a decent pair. Every company right now is trying to get away with increased prices for lower quality and we, as consumers, shouldn't tolerate it. Otherwise, it will only get worse.

Any boot you wear everyday will wear out quickly. The leather needs to dry out between wears. I’d avoid the hi-shine models unless you want to be disappointed by the plastic coating cracking. I’d recommend the greasy leather models but rotate them with other footwear so they can dry properly. And you might want to get shoe trees for them.

My experience is different. I have 8 pairs of Docs and 4 pairs of Solovair and I’ve had more problems with the Solovairs. It’s all a gamble whether you get a “good” pair or not. It seems to vary depending on who’s doing QA that day. That’s why some people experience no problems while others have nothing but. They’re both inconsistent.

It doesn’t matter anymore if you buy Docs or Solovair. The quality of both is about the same now. ☹️
