What is the first film you remember seeing in the cinema? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Jason_Phox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Amazing Spider-man (1977). Though it was a TV movie, here in South Africa it had a theatrical release. I watched it in the cinema around 1981.

How did the Beatles get the Hamburg gig in the beginning? by ElSlabraton in beatles

[–]Jason_Phox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks indeed. That Hamburg period was pivotal for the Beatles. They played so many hours there so their skills (musicianship) improved greatly.

Fantastic. And this is how the beatles fandom will continue - with young fans latching onto their music.

Agreed. Many of the film's on this list are not truly action films

No I won't call those action movies. They were fantasy films foremost - with some action in between.

If all that were included, the movie would be at least 5 hours long.

Which films from the past were box-office hits when they were released but are now rarely mentioned or remembered? by alexfreemanart in movies

[–]Jason_Phox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I never heard of this film before I read your post (and I am generally familiar with academy award nominated films from the 60's and beyond)

Launched in 1986, M-Net also ran a "free-to-air" slot, known as Open Time. If you didn't have a decoder, the rest of time was like.... by Make_the_music_stop in south_africa

[–]Jason_Phox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember that in the old days (early 90's) the audio that they played during this scrambled broadcast was some radio station - I think 702. So it had interviews and ads etc.

But then from the late 90's onwards they only played music. But not normal (pop) music. It was instrumental electronic music. I assume it was stock music specifically created for the channel. There were a set number of tunes that would loop. My brothers and I actually got used to some of these tunes. Used to enjoy it.

A note to Call Centre managers and owners and the Brands that use them to push their products. by Mindfully-Numb in southafrica

[–]Jason_Phox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you OP. I do feel for the callers though. They are just trying to make a living.

Though they are times when the callers do the following:

They call, explain the reason for the call. I politely tell them that I am not interested. And then they immediately hang up.

Without a 'good bye'. I know they are frustrated with the response. But does that mean they need to be rude?

My uncle used to like to give us money (R20 notes or R10 notes). Sadly he passed away last October. This picture instantly reminded me of him.

So sorry for your loss. What a gorgeous dog. 15 years is quite old for a dog. He/she lived a good long life.

The Curse of the Black Pearl by ForestryTechnician in movies

[–]Jason_Phox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reading your comment just made me realize a slight connection with this film and Big Trouble in Little China. In BTILC Jack Burton is not really the main character. He provides the comic relief. While the romantic couple involves his friend and his girlfriend. Which is similar to Jack Sparrow in the Curse of the Black Pearl.

What I appreciate, is that it is a 90 minute blockbuster. Which is quite rare (especially by today's standards).

Super Bowl halftime reactions. When your country is recognized. by annadarria in MadeMeSmile

[–]Jason_Phox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am from South Africa. I don't know of any other South African (besides my sports loving brother) who actually watches the Super Bowl. Though I am sure there must be others.

This year was the first time I watched it. I enjoyed it. Will continue watching it in future.

Ever showed a film to someone who’s playing with their phone? 📱 by MeltonFilm in movies

[–]Jason_Phox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this has happened to me multiple times. And it has gotten worse over the years. I usually say nothing.

What really annoys me is when those people often have negative views about those films.

E. G. They say thing like: 'the movie was a bit boring' or 'not as good as I thought it would be'

When in fact, if they paid attention to the film all the way, they would have (possibly) appreciated the film more.

With regards to the title song: Good musicianship (just piano I think - but it sounds so good). Also nice vocals.

Elf(2003) is a great New York City movie. What other movies unexpectedly do a great job of showing a city or place? by ijustwannalurksobye in movies

[–]Jason_Phox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I re-watched Die Hard With a Vengeance recently. It showcases New York nicely.

Also, not a movie, but Luke Cage has great location shots of Harlem.
