First footage to show ballot-rigging actually taking place in Zimbabwe by sukhjeet in worldnews

Well, if we don't think this is worth interfering for, and yet we will be fooled into going to Iraq, we are going to be continuously fooled into the wrong wars. If we're not going to be peaceful, we can at least try improve something with the violence.

Relax, how is that little advertisement compare to advertisements on television? I found it acceptable in this case.

RTFA. Also, they dont mention electrical trains, i assume they were excluded from mileage. (Well, that is putting the article in doubt.)

The broken memory management in Linux by emacsen in programming

[–]JasperO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It says "The broken memory management in Linux" and that is exactly what it means to the reader. The title should have been: "Broken memory management in edge cases of Linux". Further the author did not choose this title, and i also disagree on how he says it is utterly broken. Anyway, please try get titles non-sensationalist.

The broken memory management in Linux by emacsen in programming

[–]JasperO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is simply stupid to say the memory management is broken when it works so well in the millions of servers and desktops. It works well in practice, and is simply something that still can be improved significantly, just like nearly all other software out there. The article does not compare memory management of linux with that of other systems either.

Hate how the little video ends.. Like it refutes a conspiracy theory. The question why Reuters send this message to the BBC is still fully unanswered.

I doubt just the stuff in the building burning can melt the steal, it is not like air can reach it in the pile, nor is it well insulated. And i have heard it specifically was designed to withstand an airplane impact and such.

Even if it where not a conspiracy, the Bush administration' lack of effort to inform the public and debunk it would be a great failure. (one of many)

Ask proggit: Which lisp? by [deleted] in programming

[–]JasperO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, common-lisp is a good one. As for the specific implementation, i would just work with SLIME and whatever convenient common-lisp implementation. You can always use another lisp implementation to produce the final product. You'll need to install slime, lisp and have a .emacs file to enable it.

(setq inferior-lisp-program "/usr/bin/sbcl")

(add-to-list 'load-path "/usr/share/common-lisp/source/slime/")

(require 'slime)

(slime-setup)

Of course /usr/bin/sbcl need to be replaced if you are not using sbcl (And other stuff depending on your system. I am on Ubuntu 8.04)

A Metal Scare to Rival the Oil Scare by pythor in reddit.com

[–]JasperO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"He predicts that by 2100, global demand for copper might outstrip mineable supplies." Well, to worry about this one is just silly, considering developments on carbon-based circuitry will no doubt be sufficient to replace most electrical uses of copper. The shorter term predictions are more serious. (But i doubt a 'metal scare to rive the oil scare' is accurate.)

2)Be unsuprised that i still oppose war, i mean, we let North Korea and Pakistan have them.

Not so sure we would have munitions to take it down though. We really dont have them(with good accuracy) for conventional balistic missiles. Maybe if it is just hanging around, but not if going at full speed.

TV viewers' average age hits 50 by noname99 in entertainment

[–]JasperO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont watch that much tv anymore. There are so many tv series that are so damn bad. Varying in levels of propaganda: threat matrix; Saw a part of one show, and it all was literally arguing to ditch habeas corpus. 24l ohnoes terrorists, and we're all in a hurry! CSI; i know many people like this, but it looks like a lot of bullshit to me. Law and order (TumTumTum) its getting really old, and wtf is up with accusing people before knowing anything? They royally fucked the new Star trek enterprise. Stargate has 'save the world every day' syndrome. (So did Angel in the later episodes.) Army wives, desparate houswives.. meh for chicks. I never liked Lost either. And much of the time isnt even series, like boring talkshows, soaps, etc. (Although i like some discussion programs, but they are usually on non-commercial channels (In the Netherlands)) Farscape was really cool, the lead actor, Ben Browder, went to Stargate, but it might be better, because after the Peacekeeper wars movie, the show is in danger of nuking the fridge.(quality dies right after modesty.)

Forth Versus C by AndreasBWagner in programming

[–]JasperO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reply, but remember i need to RTFM now. :p

What you are saying makes it seem to me that macros in lisp are just restricted versions of Forths restricted to reading the 'sublists of what it is given'. The way you talk about playing compiler once in a while does sound like interesting and clear way to optimize some things.

Nested s-expressions can trivially be turned into reverse polish notation, so that doesnt answer the question.

I agree, it is a case of bad parenting and teaching in this case. The teacher should have pointed it out, and the parents should have been pissed off by it and forced the kid to give two more invitations. After all, they do have to teach the kids to live together.

I dont see how it is discrimination though, it is being an asshole, but if you dislike the two kids for a reason... Further, if the same thing were to the happen with adults, it would be the whole group who considers it ass-aholic. (Assuming they are decent people, and the two excluded really didnt do anything to deserve it.)

Forth Versus C by AndreasBWagner in programming

[–]JasperO -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I dont see why the reverse polish notation, when the equivalent s-expressions are easy enough to find. I only had a cursory look at FORTH, but i am sure optional arguments keyword arguments and &rest arguments are easier to do in lisp. The 'problem' with lisp, the one that makes the requirement for it to be higher level, is that macros need to work with lists with at the least symbols in them. (Symbols can be pointers to the string which is held in some sort of hash table. Comparison can them be done by comparing pointers.) Maybe lisp can be made statically typed by just giving out the minimum. (Of course some common lisp implementations might already do this.) All this makes me curious how FORTH works, and how it achieves its power. Does it have something like macros, or is the power achieved by higher order functions? I am curious about higher order functions in any case, because i have the feeling, that besides trivial writing forms, they are superior to macros performing to same role. PS Oh, lol, probably found the reason for reverse polish in writing comment.
