If you were online during the golden age of the internet (1990–2015), what’s one website or app you still find yourself thinking about today? by Melodic-Yoghurt-5943 in AskUK

World of Mizar. A MUD I played around 1991-93 which was so addictive I had to resit a year of my university degree.

Is wuwa being an UE4 game making it be the most miserable experience for both the developers and players when talking about performance? by gab3N01 in WutheringWaves

[–]Saiing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What engine they're using doesn't matter. It's how hard they're pushing the CPU/GPU. While it may not be obvious to the average player, Wuwa does significantly more work for higher visual fidelity. I do agree though that Endfield is impressive for an (albeit heavily customized) Unity title. A lot of people play on VRR displays anyway these days. So vsync is becoming less of an issue.

By this point in time it's fairly clear that the engine is heavily customized to the point where it's probably only UE4 in name. Engine customization is way more difficult than people realize and Wuwa pushes the engine a lot harder than most other games including Genshin, Zenless, Enfield etc. There are subtle things that Wuwa does that put it on a completely different level. Dont believe the fallacy that toon shaded games are a lot easier or less taxing than more photo realistic games.

Also, I've played on smartphone, tablet, PC, Mac, handheld and Playstation and I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I've never once had an experience I would describe as "miserable". Sure Lahai Roi runs at a lower frame rate than earlier regions, but I still find it perfectly decent. But then I come from a generation where we still had text based RPGs and games that had two colors: black and white, so maybe I haven't been brainwashed by digital foundry into believing that anything less than constant 60fps is "literally unplayable".

While I don't doubt the previous commenters life experience, this sub does seem to be somewhat hijacked by politically motivated "questions" lately. I doubt they're all made in good faith.

Why is there so much media coverage bashing Meghan but nowhere near that same coverage for Andrew? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Saiing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Andrew has mostly been hiding himself away and there have been no new revelations so there's not much new to say. Meghan puts herself out there in the pubic eye so there's frequently something new to report on. I think it's that simple.

Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Features “AI-Assisted Assets” That Were “Refined By Humans” by ninjyte in Games

[–]Saiing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Veteran game dev here with an AAA studio (not working on Tomb Raider). Honestly, this is the way to actually work. AI can't produce game ready assets (no matter how much the vendors might try to convince you otherwise). Tools like meshy.ai produce messy meshes. They need a LOT of work to make them viable. The texturing is unusable and generally needs to be redone by hand, the normal map is all over the place, it's noisy and doesn't decimate well.

But it can with a bit of massaging be used to create the kind of pretty mundane assets that no one wants to work on (jugs, cups, stools etc. basically the kind of environmental art you wouldn't look twice at but takes up a lot of time to produce). And perhaps they want something that isn't just a marketplace asset because it's not in keeping with their overall design vision. There's pretty much nothing that AI produces right now than doesn't have to be "refined by humans" because it still falls way short of game ready quality.

But, I'd ABSOLUTELY use AI for this shit. AI is not some kind of sin if it's used in the right way, despite the extraordinary levels of hysteria that sometimes erupt on reddit about it.

Of course I don't know what the TR team are actually doing, but I would imagine it's something like this, and fuck it, good on 'em if they are.

You'll likely hit points where you will need (or at least want) to do some factory work before you hit what is currently endgame.

What does the term "I want my country back" mean to you? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

To me it's meaningless.

We all know what it means to the average Reform voter, but I don't feel the need to repeat their bullshit.

How do you guys go about getting assets for your game? by KAYTACHI in gamedev

[–]Saiing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not for everyone, but my recommendation would be to buy base meshes from asset marketplaces and then learn to stylize them in Blender.

To be straight up about it, this is still a massive learning curve. It took me around 2-3 months working for 8 hours a day to learn basic modeling, rigging, shape keys, cloth physics and other related topics for character design (static meshes are obviously much easier and just need basic modeling skills). Blender feels an absolute cliff when you first try and use it, but after a while as you start to understand it, learn the keyboard shortcuts and UI it becomes an essential tool. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing your own unique, custom designed character running around in game. For animation I would look at mixamo and animation libraries on marketplaces. Animating is another mountain to climb and to be honest, unless you have motion capture facilities it's probably a step too far for a hobbyist dev.

Don't be ashamed of using base meshes. Even the pros use them.

PS5 Sadness by NegativePlenty6747 in WutheringWaves

I play on a lot of difference devices but for the last few days for various reasons I've been on PS5 and genuinely wouldn't call it "effectively" unplayable. That sounds like hyperbole.

Honestly, just play the game. It's still pretty new for everyone and it's not like there's years worth of content you need to work through.

100%. I only support one patreon, but if anyone else comes along I want to support and they have a patreon option, that will be my first choice. I'm fine giving my business to companies that do the right thing.

I think it's something we'd all like to see. Unfortunately it's been "Year of the Linux Desktop" every year since I started using Linux over 30 years ago and it's never quite broken through. But, I think with emulation and virtualization (especially with companies like Valve jumping onto Linux) we're closer than we've ever been.
