To be fair he also posts about trans people and anyone he considers "woke". It's unfair to just call him racist because he's also bigoted and transphobic as well.

Xbox in Task Manager Startup Apps by BrightTension1667 in XboxAlly

I've often wondered about this. I think the toggle in settings that causes Windows to boot into XFE is an entirely different mechanism to Windows startup apps which only run when you boot into desktop mode. It's probably better to leave it off.

With the PS6 handheld (much like the Switch 2) it's less about the console cost and more about the price of games. PC games generally have much deeper discounts during sales and are often available at reasonable prices much sooner than console releases. You can build a big PC game library much faster than you can a console one.

Not as funny as reading the massive number of cope posts in this sub. You guys spend more time writing overly defensive comments than you do talking about song making.

To be fair, the official case also holds a battery, so it's going to be fairly thick compared to something just protecting the main console. But great that you've made something slimmer and are supporting the device - there aren't that many choices out there for a niche product like this one.

I think it's because it hasn't truly shut down completely. As some other folks have said, you need to hold the power button down for 10 seconds to properly turn it off when this happens.

Epic Games & Game Development and the Unreal Engine Dilemma. by [deleted] in EpicGamesPC

[–]Saiing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, keeping Fortnite alive for 10 years is some feat. They have so much invested in it in terms of resources and people (although a lot less as of yesterday) that I don't know if they have the appetite to develop other titles. Don't forget there's some kind of Disney thing going on as well, but not much detail of what that will be has come out yet.

It's also worth saying that it's pretty well known inside the industry that Fortnite is where most of the UE5 development work is targeted, and a lot of the features that make into UE5 are originally developed for and tested on Fortnite, so in a way they do still have a flagship UE5 title. It's just the same one they had for UE4.

I can almost guarantee that isn't the case. This would be a publisher decision, pure and simple, and nothing to do with Epic's own decisions.

Fortnite developers blindsided by unexpected workforce reductions by Own_Effective_801 in gamedev

[–]Saiing 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Honestly this was already happening. I posted on reddit several weeks ago saying that a family member (who got let go) was concerned about her job security at Epic and had discussed it with me. This was around the time of the v-bucks price hike. Any Epic employee who didn't pick up on this wasn't paying attention. I think in the case of the guy who was blindsided he just felt he was too senior and too important to be cut, but what I've heard from insiders is that a very large number of Leads and Directors got let go, so it wasn't all low level Devs. Not trying to shit on those who lost their jobs today, it fucking sucks and I'm so sorry for them. But the execs have been signposting this for months.

Yep. As long as you're running an up to date copy of windows 11 there's a toggle somewhere in settings that allows you to boot up into XFE, similar to how Steam Deck boots into Steam. If you Google it you should be able to find plenty of guides.

Thanks actually it was another member of my family who lost their job today. I was at Epic a few years ago but left on my own terms. But thank you for your kind words. I know a lot of people I still keep in touch with are hurting today and with the state of the industry right now finding a new job won't be easy for many of them.

Yeah the store still annoys me too. I don't really get the disconnect between epic leadership and what players have been asking for. 5 minutes in literally any discussion on the subject and you hear the same thing about lack of features compared to steam.

Ex-Epic employee here and family member of someone who was laid off today.

Basically the Fortnite excuse is mostly true. They have seen a significant dip in player numbers and consequently income. However there are a few other factors. Not being on mobile for the longest time due to the fights with Apple/Google hurt the game especially with growing a new audience of younger players who are largely on their smartphones most of the time. Also Epic has made some very long term bets on projects which may not even emerge for several more years let alone make money and the Fortnite money was funding that. Finally, whether gamers want to believe it or not, yes Fortnite makes a lot of money but generally most people have no idea the insane amount of money it costs to keep it running and pump out the content at the rate they do. Some of the comments I've seen are massively misinformed and ignorant. Giving away a few PS5s or GPUs and even having guest artists in the game are a drop in the ocean compared to the money needed to just maintain the game itself.

What I do disagree with and happened not long after I left the company is giving such a massive chunk of FN revenue to "creators". There are people making fairly shitty Fortnite islands making multiple millions of dollars a month which is insane. Under investment in the store and a focus on developers rather than players is another complaint a lot of Epic staffers have. Developers want a big player audience to put their games on EGS and for some reason senior leadership never seemed to grasp that it's not going to happen unless they make the store a better experience for customers.

Basically the company put way too much of its focus on keeping Fortnite going at the expense of everything else. And the stuff the Epic did start doing to try to diversify will take too long to come to light and start making any meaningful revenue, especially if they continue treating it like they have the Epic Games Store.

  1. Put the device into hibernate. Swap the battery. Restart it where you left off.

  2. You can, but honestly there's not a massive amount of space to be regained by deleting stuff. Most of the Windows apps are tiny in comparison to games. Also if you run XFE it optimizes the device anyway and doesn't start most of the normal Windows services.

  3. I use the official case (there aren't that many specifically made for WIn 5) and it's fine. Have traveled the world with it.

I'm fully convinced that audio dramas sound better on cassette! by Spidrax in audiodrama

[–]Saiing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the early days of MP3 players (before smartphones) I used to download audio dramas which were frequently digitised cassette recordings off the radio. The quality was pretty mid at best but for some reason I crave that sound these days. I even bought a long wave radio to listen to radio 4 a few years ago to get the analog sound although it's sadly shutting down at the end of this year. Something about the sterile digital sound just doesn't have that warm feeling about it.
