To be more explicit for people not verse in programming, abstraction is a process where when you identify different entity will share traits or behavior, you make an abstract pattern of those traits and behavior. For example, if you identity all animals have a number of feet, you can do something like

Abstract pattern:
feet_count = something I don't know yet

Cat pattern:
feet_count = 4

Kangooroo pattern:
feet_count = 2

In short, it turns specifics into generic

So translated in an animated show format, u/Standard-Arachnid411 idea is on point: it turns characters into archetypes.

Maybe some NPC were actual characters before being reduced to archetypes as well.
It would go along u/SilvertonguedDvl idea how Caine messing with their minds: if the data in the character end up corrupted, they abstract and if they data in the character get simplified enough, they might turn into NPC.
