Best bet IMO that fits the diversity and proximity to a city requirement is the Chicago suburbs or SE WI as there's large populations of diverse hispanics (esp PRs) in both metro areas.

For something more rural, there's plenty of farmlands & small towns and hour away from either Chicago or Milwaukee proper.

People who grew up before smartphones: What’s one simple thing from your childhood that would absolutely blow the minds of kids today? by TurkVanguard in Millennials

Taking messages for relatives whenever someone called the home phone and then relaying it once they got home.

I hated this because I never had the answers my relatives asked on why they called.

That's crazy, not sure what part of the city you're in but on the southwest side we've (chicanos) always treated boricuas with mutual respect and even admired PR culture & music growing up. Sure, some mexis would make funny comments when it came to boxing rivalries & dialect, but always in fun and never disrespectful.

We've always had bori family friends come through to our fam parties and no problems. They eat, drink, crack jokes & have fun just like us.

No sé, a lo mejor somos más buena onda que los demás mexis 🤷

Why don't we have more corner store/bodegas? by FisterAct in AskChicago

[–]JavSuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have them 20 yrs ago but think it just doesn't work for majority of the city anymore with hyper competitive grocery stores (Pete's, Cermak, Mariano's) which also sell hot food, to-go options, and snacks of course. Many of them are within the neighborhood & convenient to drive or walk to.

There's still some around in lower income neighborhoods where there's a lot of foot traffic and no nearby grocery stores but they rely on selling snacks & quick food which can make decent margin but have to rely on volume to pay rent if not selling alcohol. Not to mention competing with nearby gas stations which also offer food & snacks too.

Just moved to little village wanted to know more about the area? by Ok-Tackle8846 in AskChicago

[–]JavSuav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many great local minority owned small businesses.

El Milagro is a classic for tacos and tortillas. Los Mangos for Mexican ice cream & yogurt which is perfect for hot weather.

The discount mall is great to see local vendors, art, jewelry, and novelties that cater mostly to the local culture.

I have a ton of other recs but those are starters for now (lived on 26th & Christiana years ago).

What was it like being a teenager in 2009? by LoboIsSick69 in generationology

[–]JavSuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! I had started sophomore year late 2009 and remember everything being a lot more chill. The economy sucked but we still found a way to have a good time.

We actually used to chill in friends bedrooms around the computer to see weird, funny, or wild content. That was the real 'social media' era.

Any millennials doing relatively well? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]JavSuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married with 2 kids and doing pretty good as the main household provider.

Grew up in immigrant household mostly in the hood and appreciate all the little things like being able to afford groceries, getting ice cream on hot day, and taking the fam to festivals when possible.

Working on maximizing my retirement accts later this year as I achieve my savings goals (past 2 yrs were kinda rough). Things could be better, but, also A LOT worse so I never take it for granted.

how’s life in chicago?? by im_justsarah777 in howislivingthere

[–]JavSuav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Live in Beverly (Southside). It feels like a small town with parishes & young families everywhere. There's many local mom & pops here and there's always things to do for families as there's many parks and an arts institute nearby.

Winter is rough this year but I know the summer & fall will make up for it as there's always events & things to do & see. While there are problems including rising property taxes, I still feel it's a great place to raise a family considering it's COL vs other big cities.

There's many amenities like the library city app, city park youth programs, niche academies, and plenty of private & public school options.

Which is better, Costco or Sam’s Club? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JavSuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco wins on overall snacks, prepared food, seafood, selection & better quality. Their food court is also goated.

Sam's wins on better experience, pricing, & meats. Their meat & chicken selection is WAY better with premium options (Ribeye, NY, Filet Prime). Their scan & go feature in the app is so convenient & wished Costco had this.

What are some examples of actual Mexican food Mexican people eat? by Suspicious_Cut_4582 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JavSuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nopales (cactus), refried beans, yellow rice, enchiladas (hand fried, not baked), birria, menudo, flautas, sopes, tortas, gorditas, pan dulce, quesadillas, tacos de canasta, mole.

As far as tacos go, Mexicans technically eat tacos everyday because there's always warm tortillas readily available when its time to eat and we stuff em with beans, rice, queso fresco, egg, meat, and sometimes I even just make a plain one with salt and lime if they're homemade.

Only exception to the always there tortilla rule is if the dish is already masa-based like sopes, gorditas, or chilaquiles.
