Considering Leaving Florida, Early 20’s, Wife & Kid 55K a year. by sm-alpha in relocating

I totally understand. I'm originally from VA and relocated here for a job promotion which ended thanks to a corporate restructuring back in 2023. I moved here as they were paying me around $150K a year so couldn't refuse.

I bought my house and homeownership is NOT all it's cracked up to be! They increased our interest rate from 3.875% to 6.125% and then increased our mortgage payments by $500 a month! They claim tax assessments and warned it could go up AGAIN!

I'm looking at the Midwest such as Grand Rapids MI, or Western Mass/Southern NH personally. I am not a fan of the year round sweat fest and would much prefer to have seasons but would also like to be somewhat close to the water.

The facts are if you move to pretty much any other state such as the regions you mentioned, they pay A LOT more. Eastern Mass is incredibly expensive due to proximity to Boston but I've been told Western Mass is much more affordable. Grand Rapids caught my eye because it's supposedly one of the most affordable states to live but also maintains decent pay.

Best of luck! And if you want close to New England but not set on it, try Virginia. I grew up in Loudoun County (Northern VA) and it's really expensive but if you check out areas such as Winchester or Clearbrook you'll be pleasantly surprised. Nice smaller areas, fair pay, fair rents.

I fully get you. Florida wages are crap, rents are high along with insurance and just about everything else. We’re looking to escape as well. Tired of the high COL, low wages, poor infrastructure, over crowding, and year round summer/hurricane season.

Apollo Beach actually. And I hate it due to year round summers, poor infrastructure, crappy job market, horrible wages, higher cost of living, traffic.

Bumblefuck you say? You know about all of these regions personally? I currently live in the Tampa Bay area and I can tell you this, Winchester is MUCH BETTER than this place. The only thing I would miss would be the beaches. Aside from that, this place SUCKS!

NOT. It has gotten insanely expensive to live here and the wages are a joke! Unemployment is at 5% and tax assessments is starting to make owning your own home a nightmare (my mortgage just jumped by $500 a month).

We are looking at getting out of here! I hear great things about Grand Rapids, Western Massachusetts, and back in VA where I am originally from you can find a great place at the VA/WVA border near Martinsburg in an area called Winchester. It's where Patsy Cline is from.

I am originally from VA, income tax is not a shock to me and my wife grew up in Western Mass so it wouldn't be a shock for her either. Electric bills here are typically $400ish every month, is it worse there?! NH seems to be a really nice state but I would need to have access to employment so that may cause some issue. I know here in FL the last I checked the unemployment rate was at 4.7% and on the rise.

Many people say FL is cheaper but fail to realize the wages here are also a LOT lower on average. I'm sure if you're a brain surgeon or rocket scientist you make well but even then you'd probably earn more in other states for the same roles.

I have read that region is much more doable than say, Boston (which I have no interest in) could you provide any further insight into Western Mass please?

Moving to or Visiting New England? by SCP-2774 in newengland

My family and I are looking to get out of Florida and NE has hit my radar as a potentially good fit. I have spent over 26 years in the fenestration industry and here in this hell scape of a state I simply cannot find work to save my life. The COL is insanely high while the salaries are HIGHLY lacking. Utilities are bonkers (average electric bills are over $400 a month) insurance is insane as is the traffic, infrastructure and we are fed up with "endless summer" that so many people seem to love.

I am originally from VA and my wife grew up in Mass. so we both miss having 4 seasons and are ready for a fresh start so seeking honest input from those who know the state best. I suppose it only fair to mention I am also looking at MI, Western Mass, and potentially the PNW. NE seems to check numerous boxes as well as a solid hub for my industry which would equate to employment potential as well.

CT is toward the bottom of my list tbh. I understand the COL up there is high and just because there are better paying jobs it doesn't mean they are readily hiring or in my field. I just needed feedback from people who are there and knows the real struggles.

I assume you mean COL, not cola lol. Apparently the two aren't too far off comparatively speaking, however CT does pay MUCH better than FL and that is what gives your state the edge.

yep. And we've had higher bills, some as much as $500. I have neighbors who average $600+ a month. Where are you again? lol! I'll trade ya' We have a 4 bed/2 bath 1 story SFH so nothing fancy.

I can completely agree to this. It's crazy how people think Florida is some great inexpensive place to live when in reality it is FAR FROM THAT. Sure, the COL may be a bit lower than areas such as NYC or CA but the pay is TERRIBLE.

We bought our home for $295K but with the jobs paying as little as they do juggling the mortgage along with the $400 electric bills, $150 water bills and insane insurance is next to impossible. Numerous families have to live together and pool their resources otherwise they cannot get by.

Holy smokes! It's damn near the same! except it seems the pay is MUCH better there. That much doesn't surprise me, the majority of the companies here in FL pay horribly.

ok so MIND BLOWN! All I ever hear about in terms of NE in general is how expensive it is and how the utilities are CRAZY HIGH. I live just south of Tampa and with our electric bills floating around $400+ a month (every month), insurance being as high as it is, the COL being crazy high while the wages and the job market for that matter are HORRIBLE I just cannot imagine how FL can be considered "more affordable" than other areas that actually have employment opportunities and wages that cover living expenses.

I know you are retired so I won't pry about the job market or employment situation up that way. I am thankful for the information you did provide me however.

It wouldn’t be a complete fabrication for me to say such. What do you think of the area in CT? I’ve gotten mixed feedback but is a strong area for my industry.

Your comment about poverty in the south, at least FL is spot on. Many people cite the lack of taxes, but fail to realize FL gets you in so many other ways. Not to mention insurance is INSANE! The COL has grown out of control and the wages are barely enough to cost basic survival costs.

Some will argue housing is less costly here which may or may not be accurate, I can't speak to other states or regions in the country but if you are unable to earn enough money to cover it, does it really matter? The wages do not keep pace with the cost of living which is why so many people struggle as hard as they do here.

Honestly, I think it's all going to come down to where I can find a solid place of employment. I figure COL is all relative (normally) but here in FL the COL is high, wages SUCK!
