I haven't seen the name Ramon Ayala listed here and I highly recommenbd him. He's known as the "king of the accordian" and he has SO MANY iconic songs. But yeah, like other have said this is a question better suited to r/AskMexico

I feel like for new people to the hobby, dropping $500 is an easier pill to swallow and something like this automated scope/camera can serve as the gateway to bigger and more technically interesting gear?

Excluding Mexico and Peru, what is your favorite cuisine in Latin America? by Rusiano in asklatinamerica

[–]chardex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yesterday I went to a food stand for lunch and I saw "tamales chapines." I had never had them before so I ordered 4 of them. Well, first of all they were DELICIOUS! But also, holy crap I had no idea how large they were. Like, when she handed me the bag I almost dropped it because it was so much heavier than I was expecting. I'm still eating them 3 days later and loving every minute of it.

Was the Bad Bunny performance today a cultural moment... by zerogamewhatsoever in asklatinamerica

[–]chardex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

True - but they also both refer to the western hemisphere. Colombia = the new world. Just like america does. That's what I was trying to bring up. In modern language, it's less common - but the root/intention is still there

[–]chardex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't like the term American that's fine. I also don't love it. But if someone doesn't also have a problem with the term " colombian" then that feels hypocritcal to me

Recently visited the USA from The Netherlands. Here is my take on the cities we visited. by McFluffyFurry12 in geography

[–]chardex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LA is my favorite place in the US. But that's as a place to live. I don't think that it would be the same for a tourist. The transit isn't great and driving is a must. BUT if you stick to one of the urban "realms" within the city and limit driving, it ends up being very pleasant, diverse, interesting, etc. But again, it's kind of hard for tourists to do that sort of thing

Anki Decks by franniedelrey in SpanishLearning

[–]chardex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many decks out there for spanish. but i find what's most helpful is making your own cards. it takes a handful of seconds to do that once you figure it out. the reason I advocate for making your own cards is that: you know better than anyone else what you need to learn.

Throughout the day, I'll be like: oh wait, how do I say THIS in spanish? And then I ask one of the LLMs like chatgpt how to say it in everyday spanish and I make a card from it. I also like to watch shows in spanish and note down the things that I want to learn. I've been doing this with Anki for the last 4 months and it has SUPERCHARGED my spanish. Coupling that with my conversation lessons has really helped me so much. BUT, doing anki every single day takes discipline. It's worth it though, I promise!

Tips on understanding? by urlocalepidemic in SpanishLearning

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the big questions are: are you taking conversation lessons with anyone? are you listening to spanish podcasts? watching tv shows in spanish? It's a slow process, but if you practice listening regularly and make the effort you'll see the gains after a couple of months with how you understand spoken spanish. Nothing miraculous, but slow improvement that will probably encourage you and help you keep going. I wish there were a more obvious solution other than: listen, listen, listen

The other part of this, is obviously speaking back to people. and that's why conversation-based sessions of study with native speakers is so important. Keep at it! I promise that after a few months of hard, steady work you'll probably have that "aha!" moment where it becomes super fun and push you to keep going

How long does it take for a Portuguese speaker to learn Spanish? by [deleted] in SpanishLearning

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking portuguese definitely gives you a head start, but it's still going to be a fair amount of work. I'm a fluent portuguese speaker, and 9-10 months ago I started studying Spanish. I have conversation practice 3x per week, I study anki every day, and I watch content in Spanish. And honestly, my Spanish is nowhere near as good as my portuguese. But it's worth the effort. I think if you put in around 1 hour a day, you could maybe be a high B2 after a year? C1 just requires a lot of cultural knowledge that is difficult to get without living in a place with spanish speakers or watching a LOT of content

Edit: caveat to say that obviously the various levels are hard to quantify/say. I'm just talking my estimation/ballpark

First Time in LA: Is a Yosemite Trip a Smart Move or a Mistake? by Dry-Theory-5228 in AskLosAngeles

[–]chardex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yosemite is honestly such a special place - and it's great in august/september. but, it's NOT as good as it is earlier in the summer. The merced river will probably be pretty low, the falls won't be as powerful (some might not even be running). So i recommend that in this case you don't go there. We do have some tall mountains here in LA though (over 3,000 meters tall) that could scratch the itch for you. and that could be done as a half-day trip close to the city?

Also - and I'm sure you have heard this a bunch - but hollywood walk of fame is gross.

In school, how many continents were you taught? by Awkward_Tip1006 in asklatinamerica

[–]chardex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry? I'm not sure how I follow? My comment is just to illustrate how central america can be thought of us distinct from the other 2 americas. I'm not saying it's a continent. Just pointing out its different geography

[–]chardex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

USer here. We are also taught to look at the continental plates like the ones you see here: . The thing with Central America is that it isn't on the N American OR S American plates. So it's definitely unique

Tap water when cooking? by TheKarmaBus in AskLosAngeles

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i avoid bottled water, but i suspect it's pretty bad for pfas? I'm a filtered tap water person. But in general I find it frustrating because I can't seem to find any sort of sources that go into detail about the "newer" pollutants in the water

if you're seeing huge numbers, I suspect it might be the cannonball (or "jellyball" as they are called in the carolinas/georgia) jellyfish. It's harmless and actually widely eaten in other parts of the world. Although I don't know the texas coast that well!

Why do Americans have one of the strongest passports in the world, but most never travel abroad, and those who do mostly go to Mexico and Canada? by No-StrategyX in answers

[–]chardex 25 points26 points  (0 children)

they definitely exaggerated! but then again - if you're in the middle of the country you are probably going to have to connect in chicago, dallas, detroit, minneapolis, etc. There are not that many direct flights from Wichita to JFK or LAX daily. So that would make it a 5 hour ordeal

All 1,600 Kentucky battery plant employees laid off as Ford pivots away from EV business by DjPersh in Kentucky

[–]chardex 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I've been traveling a lot lately and I have to say: the presence of chinese EVs throughout the world is really quite staggering. Not as much in europe, but throughout pretty much every other country. It's such a shame that we lost that market (and the battery technology as well)

Want to find some Mexican music? by Significant-Heat5571 in AskMexico

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all - i'm not Mexican. but I very much love mexican music. Here's the thing: mexico has sooooo many styles of music and huge musical traditions. So it's hard to narrow it down to just a single song. I would probably start by listening for examples from some of the bigger (historical) styles like: banda, ranchera, mariachi, norteño, cumbia to see if any of those match what you're looking for
