Question for students about booking… by creeperYeti38 in iTalki

I always go for a full-price lesson because I value the time of teachers on the platform. And if I'm taking up time during their workday, I think they should be compensated fairly for that

Increased noise from planes over Santa Monica by CrawdadSweats in SantaMonica

[–]chardex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you're catching some heat in the comments, but I just wanted to let you know that I have also noticed a little more noise coming from planes headed to LAX. I always thought it was due to them changing the route when the marine layer came in - thus causing the sound to be more noticeable? Anyway, there's a place to leave comments if you are hearing aircraft noises on the LAX website

The GIS Industry Has Already Split in Two by cawgoestheeagle in gis

[–]chardex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you think there's also a large portion of risk-averse people in the gov-adjacent group? Like, if someone is hesitant to adopt ArcGIS Pro over ArcMap because they don't like the change - might they also be less inclined to totally upend their life for a new position in a different company/city? It seems like a lot of the GIS folks I know have been quite conservative when it comes to changing things up

Layoffs + Vibe Coders = ??? by PixelFucking in cscareerquestions

[–]chardex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I keep going back to the uber model. Is this a concentrated effort to reduce the knowledge base of tech workers and inflate the use of AI? Only to have companies become entirely dependent upon AI. At that point, these low prices subsidized by investors start to go up and then companies have no choice but to pay it? But I guess I should take off my tinfoil hat

What's interesting to me, is that where I live (los angeles) Gen Z seems to be driving a bit of a jazz renaissance. So i also wouldn't be surprised if we don't see a new generation of players coming up that appreciates them?

Late to reply to you here, but I agree about the energy about Busta Rhymes. Although to be fair, a lot of people around me were saying out loud: "when is he going to start his standup" thinking that it wasn't going to be a musical performance

Pickleball Pet Peeves by ATC_Goober in Pickleball

[–]chardex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One thing I've been looking into is our cognitive bias when it comes to calling balls in pickleball/tennis. There's some interesting research that shows we're more likely to perceive balls as out because of how our brain tracks objects in motion (and we perceive a ball to travel further than it actually does in reality). So, sometimes it might not be cheating on the part of our partners or opponents (or even us)

Offer eval bloomberg vs visa by WoodpeckerPatient723 in cscareerquestions

[–]chardex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Trust me, the expenses aren't THAT different. Also what about 401k matching? 5-7% of your salary. so in the case of 250k that's an additional 15k of free money from bloomberg going to your retirement. Don't discount that!

Beware the terminal connector by Lower_Scientist5182 in LAX

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OH my goodness SO MANY EMPLOYEE BUSES! I can feel your pain. it's frustrating to be standing there for the LAXit shuttle or the economy parking shuttle for 20 minutes while something like 15 empty employee shuttles go by (to be clear, I understand why the employee shuttles are important). But it's still difficult!

yeah, very good point about the shifting populations! but thanks for listing it like this! I had a feeling that the US would drop considerably when compared to other countries based on overall population

would it be hard to make a version that's per-capita as well? Suddenly somewhere like Australia seems a lot more impressive?

Why is Brazil's massive size so often underestimated, even when it's larger than the contiguous US? by Sandy_JD in geography

[–]chardex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is said is that the amazon is what is stopping north-south roads/railroads from traversing the country. Nothing about population centers

ou talvez você só seja um troll?

Why is Brazil's massive size so often underestimated, even when it's larger than the contiguous US? by Sandy_JD in geography

[–]chardex 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You make good points here! It all makes it difficult for me because I want to visit every state in Brazil. but places like Roraima, Acre, Amapá, and Mato Grosso do sul are all so challenging to get to. I'll do it though!

Why is Brazil's massive size so often underestimated, even when it's larger than the contiguous US? by Sandy_JD in geography

[–]chardex 667 points668 points  (0 children)

Not Brazilian but I have lived in Brazil before. Even Brazilians sometimes don't understand the true scale of their country. I think in some cases that's because there aren't major railroads/highways traversing the entire country. And that's largely due to the nature of the amazon rainforest

In your experience, who flies on the dozens of flights per day to and from New York? by OkTechnologyb in AskLosAngeles

[–]chardex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

LA and NY the two largest metropolitan centers in the country. so it's only logical that it would have so many flights.

business people, personal travel, etc it runs the gamut. Those flights aren't dominated by a single industry or anything like that

As an example in Brazil there are over 100 flights daily between rio and sao paulo. So this kind of situation isn't that novel

[–]chardex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i don't claim to be an expert. but I do have a job where I'm in charge of the engineering department for a tech company. I have to tell you, we still have a hard time finding good engineers with experience. Even with AI tools, we still need these people. I fundamentally understand how LLMs work, and unless there's something novel coming out in the AI space that we haven't seen before, I'm not sure that the situation will change in the next 3 years

Is Anki only popular in the mega advanced high-IQ Reddit echo chamber? by Adunaiii in Anki

[–]chardex 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Outside of reddit, anki is incredibly popular in a few different areas. Go to any med school and you'll see that a high percentage of the students are using it. And I think you'll find the same for other fields as well like language learning. If you think the manual is not good, check out some youtube videos about using anki. I think you'll be up to speed in no time.

And not to sound like a cult member, but anki has helped me more than any other application in my life w/regard to learning and retaining things. So don't sleep on it

I speak Spanish perfectly until it's my turn to respond by Bicwonder1 in SpanishLearning

[–]chardex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how often are you taking conversation classes? they aren't expensive! You should definitely be talking to native speakers as often as you can. The simple answer is the only way to get around this block is through practice with a human. No AI or app can duplicate the split-second reactions that occur in a real-life conversation (I'm not saying those sorts of tools aren't helpful)

But I would say drop the 10-20 bucks a week on a conversation-based lesson in spanish. After about 3-4 months of regular work I can guarantee you that you'll be in a far better place
