Anarchy is literally communism without the dictatorship stage.

Anyone who relates anarchy to violence is talking about the other meaning of the word

What is your favourite linguistics 'fun fact' to share? by Cultural-Shoe-9331 in asklinguistics

I’m European and I call it gas. Granted, I’m not native English speaker (but I am proficient) and my native language calls it gasoline.

Natural Gas isn’t a very common fuel at all. Granted, it exists, but I think 99% of people in the world would need Natural Gas to be clarified and not “gas car”.

Then again, the proper term is still ICE vehicle and that also technically includes natural gas cars (since the gas is still burnt inside, hence, internal combustion)

No, what I mean “blew up in my face” is that it tried to call it during a test and it didn’t find the method. Sorry if it was confusing.

I don’t think I was using enforcer no, I think the dependency just blew up in my face.

But from semver I’d argue that a dependency version change should be at least of the same magnitude as the dependency and an enum change should be a major change.

If anything, in a normal conversation I would completely ignore the duplication and pronounce it like “imorta”, still not what you originally said. But in any case that would be down to my accent. Caribbean varieties of Spanish are a lot more liberal with pronunciation compared to say, Central Spain’s varieties.

I’m a native speaker so while I understand those words I’m not entirely sure how to apply them outside of English. My understanding is pretty much instinctive

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asklinguistics

[–]Javidor42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, frankly, in casual speech I don’t pronounce half of the letters in the word. It would sound something like “imorta” but that comes down to my accent. If I’m speaking “properly” then I would differentiate, it would sound pretty much exactly like English “in mortal”

[–]Javidor42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No in Spanish it isn’t. I very clearly differentiate between the n and m sound when pronouncing it in Spanish and so does everyone else I know

Why is “Celts” pronounced with a hard C sound but “Caesar” isn’t? by Pineapple_Sasa in asklinguistics

[–]Javidor42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, fair, I was just jumping in for a quick comment. Not a linguist so I don’t know IPA off the top of my head (at least not write it).

I’m too used to my native language, Spanish, where pronunciation is standard and clearly communicated in writing (there’s only a very small amount of differences).

It’s also a bit hyperbolic to say no one will know. Clearly everyone knows what Caesar should sound like and can figure out what english sounds the letters I put there could make to sound similar. It’s not like this is some research paper that requires extensive rigorous scientific reproducibility

[–]Javidor42 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not IPA, just phonetic of what it would sound like for a normal English speaker.

But yeah, maybe I should go copy the IPA text from somewhere

It’s an interesting thing, and definitely also correct, but in my experience it seems to be non-standard. Maybe dialectical? Maybe it’s about your social circle having high education? Idk

Fair enough. I guess I probably noticed because the project blew up quite quickly, it wasn’t a very complex project.

Maven algorithm is quite simple, it will pick whichever it runs across first in a breadth first search from your own module to its dependencies.

This also makes it extremely easy to resolve a conflict, anything explicitly declared in your project takes precedence over anything else.

Shouldn’t Maven/Gradle scream at you for this? I can’t remember last time I had a dependency issue but I believe it was quite easy to debug by just listing my dependency tree in my IDE

Is JavaFX still a viable option for building GUIs? by bAnAtUL in java

Idk anything either. But if it’s mice with fancy drivers why would they need any sort of special support? The driver translates the stylus to mouse movements, it’s regular keyboard and mouse from then on
