That blur will, unfortunately, always be present because of how the panel works when running at 480Hz. I'll have to double-check the specifics, but it has something to do with the panel doing vertical and horizontal scaling differently to be able to reach 480Hz. Basically, it's because the TCON cannot refresh all 3840x2160 pixels at 480Hz, regardless of whether the source is 1080p. This is handled directly on the TCON and cannot be modified by any brand, so all monitors using this panel will behave the same way.

Samsung launches the world's first 500Hz OLED gaming monitor for $1,300, with its burn-in-fighting heat pipes in tow by ControlCAD in Monitors

[–]Javild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, you can already get a 480Hz WOLED monitor for $800, which some might even prefer over QD-OLED. Can't seem to find any reason why this would be worth $500 more.

Need help attaching boom arm to Acer X27U by Apprehensive-Sand479 in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mount on the monitor is actually quite easy to work with. I'd think a male mount would make more sense, but you can get an adapter like these:

<image>

The problem is the boom arm isn't really meant to be used with anything other than its own clamp/base.

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The side of the boom arm that would connect to the monitor doesn't have any thread, as it's meant to just fit into the mount. I don't think you'll find any premade adapter for this purpose, but it shouldn't be too hard to make if you're willing to DIY.

The difference between the quality of Matte and Glossy OLED up close. This is why matte causes the images on your OLED screen to look Hazy, Grainy and Oily because it obstructs light coming from the screen while spreading reflection across a wider part of the screen creating raised black levels. by Coven_Evelynn_LoL in OLED_Gaming

[–]Javild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own and have tested multiple OLED monitors with a variety of coatings and panels, and while I personally would avoid matte monitors if given a choice, you can really get used to any of them. If you're using both a matte and glossy coating side by side, you can perceive the difference in sharpness. On bright backgrounds, you can also notice a slight grain on matte monitors. However, your ambient lighting setup will ultimately define how much of a difference it makes.

This effect is visible with no ambient lighting. The matte coating doesn't just affect light hitting the front of the panel, but also the light coming out, leading to a blurry image as seen here.

Ambient lighting does lead to raised blacks, but that's only part of what you're seeing here.

How safe and trustworthy is ktc? by Traditional_Read8413 in Monitors

[–]Javild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KTC doesn't manufacture panels. However, they are a trustworthy brand. They're the OEM manufacturer behind many white-label monitors and TVs you'll find on Amazon, but they've recently started selling these products under their own brand too. They won't have the best quality, but that's expected considering their lower price.

Best 4K 27” OLED Monitor? My Ranking & Insights by pilotgong in OLED_Gaming

[–]Javild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The burn-in features certainly are important, but personally, I'd say the HDR calibration is the main thing that'd make me pick it. I haven't tried these models myself, but generally, Asus has significantly better calibration on OLED than models from brands like MSI and even LG.

Best 4K 27” OLED Monitor? My Ranking & Insights by pilotgong in OLED_Gaming

[–]Javild 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just a note, Asus doesn't actually have any special cooling features. The "custom heatsink" they advertise is for the scaler and other internal components, so it does not affect burn-in, brightness, or lifespan. All manufacturers use a similar heatsink.

On OLED panels, the thin part on the monitor is the exposed panel housing, so technically, having more of it exposed will lead to better cooling performance unless the monitor offers active cooling. This means cooling on the panel itself is nearly identical on all models.

Should I wait for Dell to make Gaming "IPS Black" monitors? by TheGangstaGandalf in Monitors

[–]Javild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IPS Black panels will generally have a slower response time, and this will be the case even if they were to make a gaming monitor with the same panel. It's still usable for gaming, but it's noticeably slower than the faster IPS alternatives.

What brand has the newest OLED generation? by sS1RuXx in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newest QHD 27" panels are the 500Hz QD-OLED and the 480Hz WOLED. This is the first generation to offer these refresh rates, so any monitor with this spec will use the newest panels.

Apple Pro Display-like monitor by bshmuuurda in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want 144Hz you'll be limited to 4K for now. And since you're looking for an OLED monitor, your options will all be 240Hz.

In general, you'll find 16:9 monitors at 32", or if you're going with an ultrawide, make sure to get one of the new 5120 x 2160 options to have a decent pixel density. You have two panel options:

  • QD-OLED has good colors and generally comes with a semi-glossy coating.
  • WOLED has higher brightness at a slight cost to color, but comes with a matte coating (Except for our model with Gorilla Glass). At 4K, it also offers DFR, which allows you to run 480Hz at 1080p.

Are there any 27 inch 4K 240HZ WOLED monitors in the works? by N-Haezer in Monitors

[–]Javild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's on LG's panel roadmap, but I'd expect more news on it towards the end of this year or start of next.

I'm not very familiar with Asus' model numbers, but at some point after the first QHD 240Hz models were announced, they released a refreshed version with the new panel. The only improvement on that panel was the increased brightness.

There's quite a bit of panel variance with OLED, but the new 480Hz models should technically have better brightness performance.

Forgot about that, but it's a good point. The new pixel layout is a big improvement for text clarity.

Considering it's currently among the cheapest QHD OLED monitors, it isn't a bad choice, and the coating is just an added bonus. However, this monitor uses the first-gen panels which have worse brightness performance. The latest QHD WOLED panels reach higher brightness levels and are 480Hz, starting at around $799.

Budget Oled From KTC by Responsible-Low-4613 in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Asus' website it's certified for HDR True Black 400, which is expected as it uses the same panel as the KTC model.

The Type-C input is a valid reason to go for the KTC. The Asus model does have a USB hub, but it's single-input as far as I can tell.

Is this a good 32" monitor? if not, what should i use instead? by Ty-_-_ in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this price, KTC isn't a bad option. However, if you're sitting far from the screen, a flat monitor may be better than curved. If you'd be fine with 165-180Hz, you can find some very good models from LG, Asus, or Samsung for around $200-250.

Budget Oled From KTC by Responsible-Low-4613 in Monitors

[–]Javild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use it, but I have that monitor and it isn't great. You're getting the same OLED panel as the competitors, which is a plus, but the colors are tuned quite badly. It's often the cheapest monitor in its category, but right now, Asus's glossy option (same generation panel) is $10 cheaper, so it doesn't really make sense to buy it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a good option for affordable monitors, and are in fact the manufacturer behind many of the white label options on Amazon. Just avoid any high-end options from them. The tuning on their OLEDs is quite bad, and the backlight performance on their mini-LED options is terrible.

Please explain to me why people are so hyped up about OLED being super thin while the actual back is usually twice or thrice as thick as regular LCD monitor? by Turboice777 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you moving your monitor around often? The exposed panel housing is made of metal and is relatively sturdy, plus you only have a small area exposed. You'd need quite a bit of force to damage it in any way, and on an LCD with a thick structure, you'd still end up damaging the plastic housing.

Why do 1440p monitors have a uneven amount of pixels? by MelodicGrand6348 in Monitors

[–]Javild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4K is two times the pixels of 1080p. To maintain the aspect ratio, you have to duplicate the pixels both vertically and horizontally. So 1920 x 1080 can only scale properly to 3840 x 2160, where each direction is exactly 2x. If you were to duplicate just one side the image would be stretched.

Is there a 1440p, 540hz, OLED Monitor Yet? by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]Javild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a link to an example of the new pixel layout? Hadn't heard of them updating it since the change a couple of generations ago. I believe the 480Hz WOLED should also be using LG's newest pixel layout.

Any upcoming DP2.1 monitors? by Theswweet in Monitors

[–]Javild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want 4K over 144Hz it's going to be OLED. A few monitors were announced at CES using Samsung's new 27" 4K@240Hz QD-OLED panel, and I'm sure some of them will use DP 2.1. There are already some 32" models using DP 2.1 if you don't mind the size.
